Sports clubs to come up in all five zones in Tiruchi
Tiruchi Corporation has initiated measures to identify sites to establish indoor sports clubs in all five zones of the city.
In the 2025-26 Corporation Budget, a sum of ₹5 crore had been allocated under the General Funds to establish indoor sports clubs in all five zones. It had been decided to develop sports infrastructure for various games such as badminton, tennis, table tennis and swimming pool.
The Assistant Commissioners and junior engineers have been directed to shortlist the suitable sites for establishing the sports clubs. Underutilised spaces such as park sites and playgrounds, which are under the control of the Corporation, could be used for the purpose. It is aimed at creating the necessary infrastructure in decentralised locations so as to enable sports enthusiasts to make use of the facilities.
Preparation of the designs is underway, and a consultant will be appointed to prepare the detailed project report. 'Once the design and amenities are finalised, we will submit a proposal to the government for approval,' said a senior Corporation official.
The sports infrastructure could generate revenue for the Corporation.
According to officials, the proposed sports clubs aim at providing state-of-the-art facilities for residents, particularly youth, to engage in various sports and games. The project is expected to boost the city's sports infrastructure and encourage a healthy lifestyle among citizens.
At present, a sports complex is being constructed on 2.3 acre of land near uzhavar santhai at Anna Nagar. A sum of ₹5.5 crore has been sanctioned under the State Finance Commission Grant to develop the sports complex. The facility will have an indoor badminton court, tennis court, swimming pool, gazebo, recreational space, and a modern gym.

TGSRTC hikes bus pass fare by 20 pc
Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has increased the bus pass fare of all the categories by 20 per cent. The revised fares came into effect on Monday. Following the recent order, the new bus pass rates are – the ordinary bus pass fare has been increased from Rs 1,150 to Rs 1,400, Metro Express pass increased from Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,600 and Metro Deluxe bus fare hiked from Rs 1,450 to Rs 1,800. According to TGSRTC, the fees for student bus passes have remained unchanged for the past three years. However, due to rising expenses, the Corporation has decided to revise the charges for both student bus passes and monthly bus passes for general passengers, effective from June 9, 2025. A senior officer at TGSRTC said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) updates the toll tax annually. Each time the toll tax is revised, the state government has authorided TGSRTC under the GO 24 to raise the user fees for passengers. Consequently, the Corporation has modified the toll plaza user charge effective from June 9. However, this increase in toll plaza user charges will not apply since there are no toll plazas on the routes within Hyderabad city. The Corporation will impose an extra Rs 10 per toll plaza on every passenger who passes through the toll plaza. If a passenger does not pass through the toll plaza, there will be no user charge. Meanwhile, daily commuters have expressed concern over the sharp hike in bus pass rates. Lakhs of students and employees rely on TGSRTC buses every day, and many are now urging the state government to reconsider the revised fares. The passengers urged the government to reconsider the steep hike to avoid hardship for daily travelers.

Guntur Corporation takes eco leap with cloth bag vending machines, plastic-for-entry scheme
GUNTUR: In a bid to curb single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly habits, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched two innovative initiatives—a cloth bag vending machine network and a plastic exchange programme. GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu said the measures are part of a broader strategy to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable living. 'We are systematically working to phase out single-use plastics, which are harmful to public health and the environment,' he noted. As a first step, cloth bag vending machines have been installed at Gandhi Park and NTR Stadium. These machines dispense durable cloth bags for Rs 20, payable using Rs 10 notes, Rs 5 coins, or a combination of both. The GMC is exploring partnerships to feature advertisements on the bags, which could further reduce their cost to Rs 10. Plans are also in place to expand the vending network to more public areas. In a unique incentive-based move, the Corporation has introduced a plastic exchange program that allows residents to gain free entry to Gandhi Park by submitting 1 kilogram of household plastic waste. Dedicated counters for collecting plastic and electronic waste have been established within the park. 'This is more than just waste disposal—it's about cultivating a change in mindset,' Srinivasulu stressed, urging citizens to actively participate in creating a plastic-free Guntur. Residents have welcomed the initiative. 'Small steps like these make a big difference,' said Anjali Reddy, a local resident. 'Affordable cloth bags and simple recycling incentives encourage people to be responsible.' Through this blend of accessibility, incentives, and civic engagement, the Corporation aims to turn its 'Clean Guntur' mission from a slogan into a daily community practice.
