Unemployed man wielding samurai sword in spat gets 12 years' jail
MUAR: An unemployed man who threatened a rival with a samurai sword in a revenge-fuelled confrontation was sentenced to 12 years in jail and four strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today. Muhamad Shukri Rahmad, 31, who has 13 prior convictions, pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous weapon in public and testing positive for drugs. "I regret what I did. I beg the court to consider a lighter sentence," he said before Judge Sayani Mohd Nor handed down the sentence. For the sword possession offence, the court sentenced him to five years' jail and one stroke of the rotan. According to the charge, the man was found in possession of a 90cm samurai sword without lawful authority at an eatery on Jalan Sungai Abong here at 3.13pm on May 24. He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a maximum of 10 years' imprisonment and whipping. According to the facts of the case facts, a 33-year-old man lodged a police report claiming that he was approached by three helmeted and masked men, including the accused, who was armed with the sword. The accused allegedly swung the sword several times at the victim, who managed to avoid being struck. Police investigations showed that the accused had harboured a grudge against the victim following a prior fight and had sought revenge. In a separate charge, Shukri also pleaded guilty to drug use and was sentenced to seven years' jail and one stroke of the cane after testing positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented. The court ordered both sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on May 29. He will also be placed under police supervision for two years after completing his prison term.

Sessions Court Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal handed the sentence to Abdul Atar Jakal who pleaded guilty, Thursday. Advertisement Abdul carried the dangerous weapon at the ABX area, Bandar Indah, here, without any lawful purpose on April 28, this year, at 11am. He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958. The court heard that on the said day, Sandakan police patrol received a report of a man suspected of going on a rampage while in possession of a machete around the area. Abdul had also swung the machete at law enforcement officers on duty and fled towards the Bandar Kim Fung, then towards Sri Taman, Batu 3, here, before being apprehended. The court ordered Abdul to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and referred to the Immigration Department for further action. SANDAKAN: Police arrested a foreigner who went on a rampage while armed with a machete in the Bandar Indah area on Monday. Sandakan District Police Chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said a team from the MPV and URB patrol units of the Sandakan District Police Headquarters responded to information received at around 11am, reporting a man behaving aggressively at the location. He said the suspect aged 27 was apprehended and a 70cm-long machete, including the handle, was seized. Man claims trial to possessing knife at Kuching International Airport car park

Sazri Sakawi entered the plea of not guilty upon being charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958. The section provides for a minimum prison sentence of five years and a maximum of 10 years, as well as whipping, upon conviction. According to the charges, Sazri allegedly committed the offence at around 11.50am on April 25 at the Kuching International Airport car park. After his not guilty plea was recorded, Sazri requested bail on the grounds that his wife is pregnant and they have a young child. However, deputy public prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian informed the court that no bail would be offered as the offence is non-bailable. Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi fixed May 27 for case management and confirmed that no bail would be offered to Sazri. Sazri was unrepresented by legal counsel.
