Commanders put Terry McLaurin on did not report list, Sam Cosmi on PUP list

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is officially holding out of training camp. The Commanders placed McLaurin on the did not report list on Wednesday morning, which sets the stage for daily fines of $50,000 until the wideout joins the club to prepare for the 2025 season. McLaurin opted not to report because he wants a new contract with the team that would presumably make any short-term losses easier to swallow. Washington also announced that guard Sam Cosmi has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. Cosmi tore his ACL in the team's playoff win over the Lions. Both players can be activated at any point in camp, although the timing of Cosmi's injury likely means he'll be out for quite a while. They'll be hoping that the relationship with McLaurin is mended more quickly.

Dan Quinn says injured Commanders' OL is doing 'excellent'

One of the reasons Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was so successful in 2024 is because of his offensive line. No, they weren't at the top of the league, but they did enough to give him the time he needed. That's their job, and they did it well. In the divisional round of the playoffs, though, a key piece of that offensive line went down. Right guard Sam Cosmi tore his ACL, which meant missing the NFC Championship game and a portion of the 2025 season. The Commanders tried to plug the hole with Trent Scott, who played well, but Cosmi has a different impact on the players around him. Which is why Commanders' fans should be thrilled to hear that Cosmi's recovery is going very well. Advertisement "Sam is doing excellent," said head coach Dan Quinn. "Like he has really put the work in. He's hitting all the markers that he's supposed to. We're not gonna miss one step along the process. But it starts with him, man, like just the everyday intensity that goes with it. "There's like a work mindset that comes outta that important because that's who Sam is, and he's off to a really strong start hitting all the markers he's supposed to up to now." Cosmi had his ACL surgically repaired after the Commanders' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which ended their season. He was seen jogging on the sidelines at the final minicamp practice. While he will still miss a portion of the 2025 season, Cosmi's recovery has gone smoothly so far, and it's largely because of his attitude. "I'm just gonna attack this like I have everything in my whole entire career, my life," Cosmi said. "I said this whenever I got the extension: how much work you put in is what you're going to get out. That's what I'm going to do with this, and hopefully, I'll be back on the football field way sooner than expected." Advertisement When that happens, the Commanders will have an offensive line battle for who starts, and that's not a bad problem to have. The 6-foot-6, 309-pound lineman isn't going to back down from any other player on the football field, so he's certainly not going to let this injury keep him down either. And when he gets back into the lineup, he will elevate the offensive line as he has for the last four seasons. How much better is the Commanders' offense after recent moves?

Is the Commanders' offense better today? Well, there are so many roster spots still undetermined, so one can't say with bravado that they are better. Yet, the Commanders have certainly helped their offense Might the Commanders be moving left tackle, Brandon Coleman, to guard now? Or perhaps is Coleman being moved to right tackle? If guard, Coleman is a much better athlete than Nick Allegretti. If he is the guard, he could also move to the right side and play for Sam Cosmi, recovering from an ACL injury against the Lions in the playoffs in January. Consider, if you will, if Cosmi returns from his injury by Thanksgiving. This could potentially allow the Commanders to have Coleman at LG and Cosmi at RG. Suddenly, in the season's last six weeks, the Commanders could have a terrific duo of athletic guards in Coleman and Cosmi. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was acquired on Monday, brings much value to Jayden Daniels's blind side. The Commanders could help their right tackle from time to time while being able to trust Tunsil more on the left side. Cornelius Lucas will not be returning as the Commanders swing tackle. Lucas, now age 33, agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns. The Commanders may draft a tackle in one of the middle rounds, which they hope will be their swing tackle in 2025. Wide receiver Dyami Brown has departed for the Jaguars, so the team really doesn't have a proven deep threat other than Terry McLaurin. Deebo Samuel is a new addition at receiver and he is an improvement over Brown when it comes to blocking in the running game and when breaking tackles carrying the ball. Yet, Brown did offer something deep that only McLaurin can offer presently. The Commanders also re-signed running backs Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez, who were their third and fourth running backs. At tight end, their top four tight ends are all secured and will be returning. Is the Commanders offense better? The offensive line appears to be, yes. The verdict on the wide receivers and running backs is still out. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: NFL free agency: Has the Washington Commanders' offense improved?

Injured Commander working hard to return next season

Tearing an ACL is difficult for any football player. When you are a 300-pound plus lineman, that is so much weight for your injured leg to support. In addition, when an injured 300-pound lineman tears his ACL in the NFC divisional round as Sam Cosmi did, he has a huge challenge ahead to not miss a great deal of time in the 2025 NFL season. The Washington Commanders certainly missed Cosmi the next week when they traveled to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in the NFC Championship game. 'There's nothing more than I want to be on the field with my brothers and being able to battle,' Cosmi said when he was cleaning out his locker. Cosmi's surgery was completed on Jan. 28, and the former Texas Longhorn already says he wants to return earlier than expected. 'I'm gonna do everything in my power to get my body in peak physical shape and be able to be ready for next year,' Cosmi said. 'How much work you put in is what you're going to get out. That's what I'm going to do with this, and hopefully, I'll be back on the football field way sooner than expected.' Sam Cosmi is downright hilarious on this play. First – tremendous job finding work and absolutely displacing a 300 lbs human. Second – he realizes Jayden isn't running and he can't get downfield, so he falls over backwards to avoid a penalty. — Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 24, 2024 Adam Peters and Dan Quinn really like Cosmi, as he was signed to a second contract in September. 'This guy is a Commander through and through,' Quinn said then. 'He's tough. He plays square. He's strong. We're really fortunate that he'll be an anchor inside for years to come.' In his first two seasons, Cosmi missed 11 combined games. However, Cosmi started in all 34 games over the last two seasons.
