Arab League Observes International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Media

Mohamed Mandour The League of Arab States marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Media annually on 11 May, in accordance with Resolution 508 adopted by the Council of Arab Information Ministers on 22 September 2022. Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, said that this observance transcends mere symbolism. It constitutes a renewed and urgent appeal to the international community to extend tangible support to Palestinian media institutions, in light of the egregious violations and systemic suppression of press freedoms perpetrated by the Israeli occupation authorities. These transgressions have reached a devastating peak amid the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, wherein journalists—like countless unarmed civilians—have been deliberately targeted while discharging their professional duties under dire humanitarian and security conditions marked by relentless bombardment, blockade, and deprivation. Ambassador Khattabi reaffirmed the League's unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian media sector amidst the continuing onslaught on Gaza and the entirety of the occupied Palestinian territories. He noted that, as of the end of April 2025, 212 journalists have lost their lives, while at least 400 others have sustained injuries, rendering the Gaza Strip the most perilous environment for journalism globally. He further condemned the persistent obstruction by the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian media's work in all its facets, as well as the blatant disregard for international humanitarian law—particularly Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions—which mandates the protection and safety of journalists during armed conflict. Ambassador Khattabi underscored the imperative of enforcing these protections in accordance with internationally recognised professional and ethical standards, and within the framework of binding legal instruments, notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War

Arab Media Excellence Award Committee convenes for ninth edition

Mohamed Mandour In implementation of the resolution adopted during the 20th Ordinary Session of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, held in the United Arab Emirates on 9 December 2024, under the agenda item titled "Promoting Professional Media Quality and Excellence and Strengthening the Capacities of Arab Media Professionals," the Media and Communications Sector of the League of Arab States is organising the meeting of the Jury Committee for the Arab Media Excellence Award. The meeting is scheduled to take place on 5–6 May at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. The meeting will be chaired by the State of Kuwait, the official sponsor of the award, and will see the participation of representatives from the Member States of the committee, namely: the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Palestine, the State of Qatar, the Lebanese Republic, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. On this occasion, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communications Sector, affirmed that this edition is being held under the theme "Arab Youth and New Media" in response to the rapid developments within the media landscape, particularly the rise of digital platforms and their profound impact on societal sectors—especially the youth, who represent the most engaged and influenced demographic in the digital and social media realm. Ambassador Khattabi stated that the Arab Media Excellence Award, launched in 2015 pursuant to Resolution 409 of the Council of Arab Information Ministers at its 46th session, seeks to recognise and honour outstanding media contributions in the Arab world. The award is designed to spotlight media excellence and creativity that address issues of relevance to the Arab nation. It includes four primary categories: television, radio, press, and digital media. He further noted that the award has undergone significant qualitative enhancements in recent years, with broadened scope and diversified content, thereby reinforcing its role as an incentive for professional excellence across the media spectrum. To date, the General Secretariat has received over 140 nominations across the various award categories. During the session, committee members will assess submissions presented by member states, as well as organisations and unions with observer status at the Council of Arab Information Ministers. Entries will be evaluated based on their alignment with the criteria and standards set forth in the award's bylaws, which outline the conditions and mechanisms for participation. The evaluation process will adhere to the principles of transparency, impartiality, and integrity, while respecting the national and sovereign contexts of the member states. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Arab League Statement on Media Day

Mohamed Mandour In implementation of the resolution adopted by the Council of Arab Information Ministers at its 46th ordinary session, the League of Arab States commemorates Arab Media Day on 21 April of each year. On this occasion, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, affirmed that this year's Arab Media Day comes amid the continuing Israeli aggression and blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip which has left thousands dead, injured, or missing, in addition to the widespread destruction of public and private infrastructure, including health, educational, and social facilities. Such atrocities represent a blatant and grave violation of the principles of international humanitarian law, particularly those ensuring the protection of civilians, including medical personnel, rescue teams, and members of the press. Ambassador Khattabi stated that this asymmetric war has led to the killing of 209 journalists since 8 October 2023—an appalling toll that constitutes an unprecedented escalation in the history of conflicts. He further denounced the systematic and deliberate practices of the Israeli occupation authorities against journalists, which include deportation, physical assaults, arbitrary arrests, the confiscation of media equipment, the suppression of digital platforms, and the restriction of internet access. He stressed the urgent need to establish robust mechanisms to ensure the safety and protection of journalists operating in conflict zones. He affirmed the importance of reinforcing the existing legal frameworks—namely the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, the International Convention on the Safety of Journalists and Media Professionals, and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and UNESCO—through comprehensive reforms and enhanced implementation measures. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. AL, SCMR Head Discuss Strengthening Media Cooperation

Mohamed Mandour Eng. Khaled Abdel Aziz, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation in the Arab Republic of Egypt, received Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector at the League of Arab States, at the Council's headquarters on 5 February. As the Arab Republic of Egypt holds the position of Vice-Chairman of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, the meeting provided an opportunity to explore avenues for strengthening cooperation in the media sector. Discussions focused particularly on the follow-up mechanisms for implementing the recently adopted resolutions of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, as well as Egypt's valuable contributions to upcoming meetings, including preparations for the ministerial session scheduled for the second quarter of 2025 in the Republic of Iraq. The head of the Media and Communication Sector expressed his appreciation for the pivotal role played by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation in advancing the directives of the Council of Arab Information Ministers aimed at developing Arab media, enhancing the professional competencies of Arab media professionals, and reinforcing an open, cooperative approach within the sector. This approach fosters collaboration with government media bodies in member states, as well as with organisations and unions operating under the umbrella of the League of Arab States, to establish a media landscape that is more attuned to the pressing concerns of the Arab world. He further emphasised that these efforts align with the objectives of the Arab Media Action Plan, which places the Palestinian cause at its core, alongside key programmes and strategies dedicated to promoting sustainable development across the Arab region.
