AL, SCMR Head Discuss Strengthening Media Cooperation
Eng. Khaled Abdel Aziz, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation in the Arab Republic of Egypt, received Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector at the League of Arab States, at the Council's headquarters on 5 February.
As the Arab Republic of Egypt holds the position of Vice-Chairman of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, the meeting provided an opportunity to explore avenues for strengthening cooperation in the media sector.
Discussions focused particularly on the follow-up mechanisms for implementing the recently adopted resolutions of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, as well as Egypt's valuable contributions to upcoming meetings, including preparations for the ministerial session scheduled for the second quarter of 2025 in the Republic of Iraq.
The head of the Media and Communication Sector expressed his appreciation for the pivotal role played by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation in advancing the directives of the Council of Arab Information Ministers aimed at developing Arab media, enhancing the professional competencies of Arab media professionals, and reinforcing an open, cooperative approach within the sector.
This approach fosters collaboration with government media bodies in member states, as well as with organisations and unions operating under the umbrella of the League of Arab States, to establish a media landscape that is more attuned to the pressing concerns of the Arab world.
He further emphasised that these efforts align with the objectives of the Arab Media Action Plan, which places the Palestinian cause at its core, alongside key programmes and strategies dedicated to promoting sustainable development across the Arab region.

Israel's defence minister on Tuesday reprimanded the country's army chief over appointments made without his approval, as tensions simmered between the military and the executive ahead of a planned expansion of the genocidal war in Gaza. A statement from Israel Katz's ministry, the defence minister, said that deliberations conducted by Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir on military appointments "took place... without prior coordination or agreement" with the minister. Tensions have been simmering for two weeks between the chief of staff and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government over the next steps in the army operation in Gaza, where the occupation troops have killed nearly 62,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women. Israeli media reported that Zamir was opposed to a plan approved by the security cabinet on Friday to take control of all of densely populated Palestinian City. Israeli media reported that Zamir favoured encircling Gaza's largest city, rather than conquering it. The Israeli army controls around 75 percent of the Palestinian territory which has been devastated by 22 months of war. Zamir, who was appointed in March after his predecessor was dismissed, said last week that he would continue expressing the army's position "without fear, in a pragmatic, independent, and professional manner". The world's largest sovereign wealth fund withdraws its investments from Israel
Norway's sovereign wealth fund, the world's largest with total assets exceeding US$ 1.6 trillion, announced the divestment of several Israeli companies, an unprecedented move that reflects a shift in the fund's policies toward Israel. According to the fund's official website, an interactive map shows its investments in each country, and until recently, the fund's investments in Israel were substantial, with data revealing that it had pumped more than 16.2 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately $1.6 billion) into the Israeli market, compared to only 973 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $96 million) into Egypt. Eleven Israeli companies have been directly impacted by the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund's decision, particularly Bet Shemesh Engines Holdings, a company operating in the aerospace and defense sector and listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Despite the announcement of the withdrawal, the company's stock closed up +3.40 percent, according to Market Screener, indicating that the market has yet to fully absorb the impact of the decision, or that local investors have rushed to fill the void. Other prominent companies impacted by the Norwegian Wealth Fund's decision include: Elbit Systems, a defense industry and technology company. Ashtrom Group, a construction and real estate development company. Delek Group, one of Israel's largest energy companies. Shuversal, Israel's largest retail chain. Veronique International (Electra), an infrastructure and contracting company. Mounting European pressure on Israel Israel has been facing significant European pressure recently, with France and Britain threatening to announce their recognition of a Palestinian state during the upcoming UN meetings in September. Meanwhile, Germany announced a halt towards invest in any Israeli companies involved in the war on the Gaza Strip.

Egypt, Jordan sign 10 cooperation agreements - Foreign Affairs
The Egyptian-Jordanian Joint Higher Committee concluded its 33rd session in Amman on Tuesday with the signing of 10 cooperation documents and memoranda of understanding in fields that serve to enhance bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Jordan. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and his Jordanian counterpart, Jaafar Hassan, presided over the session, which was attended by a host of ministers representing both countries. The signed agreements include cooperation in investment, consumer protection, local development, cultural heritage protection, planning, youth, and government procurement. They also involve executive programmes for coordination in religious affairs, tourism and antiquities, and high-level financial dialogue, as well as initiatives to advance joint projects in line with the two countries' economic priorities. During the session, Madbouly affirmed that Cairo seeks to bolster cooperation with Jordan in many essential fields, including electrical interconnection, which would benefit several countries in the region. He also expressed Egypt's readiness to support joint investments and praised the scale of Jordanian investments in Egypt. Both prime ministers highlighted promising opportunities in trade, transport, and tourism, signalling the importance of activating cooperation with Iraq within the 'Egyptian-Jordanian-Iraqi' trilateral cooperation mechanism. For his part, Hassan expressed Jordan's interest in drawing on Egypt's expertise in building an administrative city, referencing Egypt's New Administrative Capital project. In response, PM Madbouly affirmed his eagerness to cooperate with Jordan on this matter. The Jordanian premier also affirmed that the measures the Jordanian government is undertaking to regularize and rectify labour status are never meant to reduce Egyptian labour. Palestinian cause PM Madbouly also highlighted the continued cooperation and coordination between both countries' political leaderships in support of the Palestinian people, particularly facing Israeli attempts to liquidate their cause, whether in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank. Additionally, the Egyptian premier reviewed Egypt's ongoing mediation efforts, along with Qatar and the United States, to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, in addition to its preparations for hosting the International Conference on the Early Recovery and Reconstruction of Gaza once a ceasefire is reached. For his part, PM Hassan expressed his appreciation for Egypt's prominent role in supporting the Palestinian cause and the humanitarian assistance it provides for the Palestinians in Gaza.
