Arab League Observes International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Media

Mohamed Mandour
The League of Arab States marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Media annually on 11 May, in accordance with Resolution 508 adopted by the Council of Arab Information Ministers on 22 September 2022.
Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, said that this observance transcends mere symbolism. It constitutes a renewed and urgent appeal to the international community to extend tangible support to Palestinian media institutions, in light of the egregious violations and systemic suppression of press freedoms perpetrated by the Israeli occupation authorities. These transgressions have reached a devastating peak amid the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, wherein journalists—like countless unarmed civilians—have been deliberately targeted while discharging their professional duties under dire humanitarian and security conditions marked by relentless bombardment, blockade, and deprivation.
Ambassador Khattabi reaffirmed the League's unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian media sector amidst the continuing onslaught on Gaza and the entirety of the occupied Palestinian territories. He noted that, as of the end of April 2025, 212 journalists have lost their lives, while at least 400 others have sustained injuries, rendering the Gaza Strip the most perilous environment for journalism globally.
He further condemned the persistent obstruction by the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian media's work in all its facets, as well as the blatant disregard for international humanitarian law—particularly Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions—which mandates the protection and safety of journalists during armed conflict. Ambassador Khattabi underscored the imperative of enforcing these protections in accordance with internationally recognised professional and ethical standards, and within the framework of binding legal instruments, notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

OPEN// FM urges finding political horizon that leads to implementation of two-state solution

CAIRO, July 31 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty underlined the importance of finding a political horizon that would lead to the implementation of a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The top diplomat gave the remarks during a meeting with US Senator Ted Cruz, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Near East, according to a press release by the foreign ministry on Thursday. The talks covered relations between Egypt and the United States and ways to strengthen their strategic partnership, including cooperation in the fields of security and counterterrorism. The two sides also exchanged views on a number of regional issues of mutual concern. Minister Abdelatty praised Senator Cruz's efforts to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group, highlighting his submission of a bill to the Senate earlier this year to place the group on the terrorist list. On the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's intensive efforts to broker a ceasefire and facilitate a captive-prisoner exchange deal in coordination with Qatar and the United States. He stressed the urgent need to accelerate the flow of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians. The talks also addressed developments in several regional flashpoints, including Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon. Abdelatty underlined the importance of protecting maritime security in the Red Sea, describing it as a strategic artery for global trade. The minister also expounded Egypt's concerns over the Nile water and national water security, stressing Egypt's position that shared water resources must be governed by international law. He underlined the importance of enhancing cooperation based on consensus and mutual benefit to serve the interests of Nile basin states. Abdelatty also reiterated rejection of any unilateral actions that violate international law. He stressed that Egypt will take all measures that are guaranteed by international law to protect its water security. He reiterated Egypt's unwavering stance calling for de-escalation in the Middle East region and rejection of military solutions to conflicts. He called for resorting to diplomatic channels to address the Iranian nuclear file in a way that upholds regional and global stability. (MENA) S R E/R E E

Egypt welcomes Canada, Malta pledge to recognize Palestinian statehood - Foreign Affairs

Egypt welcomed recent announcements from the Canadian and Maltese governments to recognize the state of Palestine. According to a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cairo said the "growing number of countries moving toward recognition is a historic step that supports the long-standing calls from Egypt and other Arab nations for a Palestinian state." The Canadian and Maltese announcements come days after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron also pledged to recognise the Palestinian state formally. Such steps are crucial for restoring the "legitimate and inalienable rights" of the Palestinian people, the ministry added. The announcement by the four Western countries that they intend to recognise Palestinian statehood comes amid global outrage over the deaths of tens of Palestinians in Gaza from starvation due to a five-month-old total blockade on the strip. The recent announcements step up pressure on Israel to end its war in Gaza and its settlement expansion in the West Bank. Egypt also reiterated its call for all countries that have not yet recognised Palestine to do so "quickly." Cairo urged nations to "stand on the right side of history" and contribute to the implementation of a two-state solution, establishing an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced their nations' intention to recognise the Palestinian state during a UN gathering in September. To date, 147 of the 193 UN member states—roughly three-quarters—have recognised the Palestinian state. Since the outbreak of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, several countries such as Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia, and other non-European nations, have officially recognised Palestinian statehood, with other countries signalling they may follow suit. There have even been calls for Palestine to be granted full membership to the UN, a move that would grant it the right to vote and fully participate. Since 2012, Palestine has been granted non-member observer status at the UN In May 2024, the UN General Assembly voted to expand Palestine's rights within the body, allowing greater participation in committee work, though without granting voting rights. In its genocidal war in Gaza since October 2023, Israel has killed 60,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 150,000, mostly women and children. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
