Michael Vaughan Slams England's Team Selection: 'If It Was Easy, Anyone...'

Curated By : Rudransh Khurana Last Updated: August 02, 2025, 13:52 IST Michael Vaughan (AP Photo) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed Brendon McCullum and the team's decision to pick Jacob Bethell for the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Vaughan said England were throwing undercooked players into the 'hotbed of international cricket', thinking it was 'easy'. He believes that it'll only end up hurting Bethell and other such cricketers' careers in the long term. Bethell had played only two Tests before coming in as Ben Stokes' replacement at the Oval. Out of his last ten matches, only one was a First-Class game, against Somerset in the County Championship Division 1 in June. Overall, known more as a white-ball talent, Bethell has played 24 First-Class matches, scoring 1030 runs at 28.61 and picking 12 wickets at 70. At the Oval, he was outfoxed to an LBW by a Mohammed Siraj yorker for 6 (14). 'It has been an epic. It really has been a brilliant series, and I think this England side, on this kind of pitch, I like the way that they played today," Vaughan told the BBC after the second day's play. 'The only thing I say is in terms of their selection, they have picked players who have been playing no cricket. And to throw them into this hotbed of international cricket in front of this amount of people, with so many more watching, not just here but on TV screens around the world, it isn't an easy game. If it was that easy, anyone could play Test match cricket. If you're throwing a 21-year-old into this situation on the back of one first-class match in our summer, I find that absolutely extraordinary. I don't think you're giving a kid the best chance of succeeding at this level," he added. Swipe Left For Next Video View all Bethell was only one of several changes England made for the match. They also brought back Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue into the team. While Atkinson was recovering from an injury for the first four Tests, and Tongue was already with the squad, Overton came off six straight games with Surrey. Stumps were called when India were 75/2, ahead by 52 runs in the Test. view comments News cricket Michael Vaughan Slams England's Team Selection: 'If It Was Easy, Anyone...' Watch: Ishan Kishan imitates Harbhajan Singh in rare County bowling chance

Ishan Kishan appears to be enjoying his stint in County cricket. The India wicketkeeper-batter has made an early impression for Nottinghamshire with two fifties in as many red-ball games in the County Championship Division 1. On Wednesday, in a light-hearted moment during a drawn match against Somerset in Taunton, Ishan even got the chance to roll his arm bowled spin—both off-spin and leg-spin—within the span of a single over. For his first delivery in the County Championship, he imitated Harbhajan Singh's iconic action, bowling from over the wicket to Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who was batting in the 140s. Kishan nailed the Bhajji impression with remarkable followed it up with a couple of conventional off-spinners before switching to around the wicket. From that angle, he channelled Shane Warne and bowled leg-spin. His final delivery drifted well wide of the batter, but the umpire generously chose not to signal a wide. As it turned out, that was the final over of the match. Kishan finished with figures of 0 for 1 from his sole over. Earlier, Somerset had posted 379 in the first innings, with strong contributions from Tom Banton and Tom Abell. In reply, Notts piled on 509 in 163.2 overs, led by centuries from Ben Slater (124) and Jack Haynes (157).advertisementIshan played a brisk knock in the middle order, scoring 77 with eight boundaries and two sixes. In his County debut against Yorkshire last month in Nottingham, he had struck a quickfire 87 off 98 balls, hitting 12 fours and a six in another drawn 26-year-old, who last played a Test for India in July 2023, has been making the most of the post-IPL lull in Indian cricket. Having missed selection for the ongoing tour of England, Kishan has kept himself in rhythm. He was in decent form during IPL 2025, scoring 354 runs in 14 matches for SunRisers Hyderabad—his new franchise after seven seasons with Mumbai not having featured for India since November 2023, Kishan is clearly keeping himself ready for any opportunity that may arise in the 2024–25 season.- Ends

Bairstow bowls after 11 years during County Championship match for Yorkshire

Out-of-favour England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow rolled his arm over for the first time in 11 years during a County Championship Division 1 match for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire on Wednesday. With the contest heading towards a definite draw, Bairstow, who has been named Yorkshire skipper for this season, bowled what turned out to be the final over the match. Finlay Bean, who struck a double-hundred in the first innings, took Bairstow's place behind the stumps for that solitary over, which went for six runs. This was Bairstow's second over in professional cricket. He last bowled during a County Championship match against Durham at Chester-le-Street in May 2014. Yorkshire replied with a mammoth 510 after Nottinghamshire posted 487 in the first innings. Bairstow, who hasn't played a Test for England since the Dharamsala Test against India in March last year, scored an 80-ball 41 in the only innings he batted. Nottinghamshire was 148 for one in its second innings when both captains agreed to a stalemate.
