Bairstow bowls after 11 years during County Championship match for Yorkshire
With the contest heading towards a definite draw, Bairstow, who has been named Yorkshire skipper for this season, bowled what turned out to be the final over the match. Finlay Bean, who struck a double-hundred in the first innings, took Bairstow's place behind the stumps for that solitary over, which went for six runs.
This was Bairstow's second over in professional cricket. He last bowled during a County Championship match against Durham at Chester-le-Street in May 2014.

Both teams shared 12 points each after the run-fest that ensued at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Yorkshire replied with a mammoth 510 after Nottinghamshire posted 487 in the first innings.
Bairstow, who hasn't played a Test for England since the Dharamsala Test against India in March last year, scored an 80-ball 41 in the only innings he batted. Nottinghamshire was 148 for one in its second innings when both captains agreed to a stalemate.

‘I think it's doubtful': Jonny Bairstow gives honest thoughts on England future
A few years ago, England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was one of the staples in the national side. Fast forward to 2025, the player looks to be a long way away from making a comeback in the team with Bairstow himself not looking confident of returning in England colours. 'Oh look, if that comes, that comes but I think it's doubtful judging by the fact that I've not heard too much,' Bairstow said after scoring an unbeaten 86 off just 50 balls for Welsh Fire in the Hundred. Bairstow last played a T20I match for England in June 27 vs India at the semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup. His last ODI match was back in 2023 vs Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in an ODI World Cup group Stage match and his last Test was at Dharamsala against India in March 2024. It was also his 100th Test for the country, making him the 17th player in cricketing history to reach that milestone. ''I've not really heard too much.'' Jonny Bairstow says he is not confident about a return to international cricket. He scored a scintillating 86* off just 50 balls to nearly get Welsh Fire over the line at Sophia Gardens this evening. #BBCCricket #TheHundred — Test Match Special (@bbctms) August 9, 2025 Despite having such a long career, Bairstow has never had a settled role in England's Test side. His batting position has changed over the years and whether he would keep wicket has also never been certain. Bairstow took to the Bazball approach like a fish to water. He was the posterboy for the philosophy in its early days and gave the initial ignition to the method in the summer of 2022, helping England chase big totals in the final innings of Tests. Bairstow played in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians and scored 85 runs in 2 matches after he was drafted in for the IPL 2025 Playoffs, replacing English compatriot, Will Jacks. His last stint in the IPL was with PBKS in 2024 where he played in 11 matches. The 35-year-old, however, has a respectable record in the IPL, mainly on the back of a strong profile with the Sunrisers Hyderabad between 2019 and 2021 and a superb 108 not out for PBKS in the league's record 262-run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

Ruturaj Gaikwad's Yorkshire Replacement Smashes Career-Best List A Score
Last Updated: Imam ul Haq has shone for Yorkshire, scoring career-best 159 in One-Day Cup debut with 20 fours and two sixes. Star Pakistan batter Imam ul Haq, who had replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad at Yorkshire after the latter pulled out of the season due to personal reasons, recorded his career-best List A score to follow up with a half-century on his One-Day Cup debut on Friday. Having made his debut against Sussex in the County Championship late last month, Imam scored just 19 in a team total of 545/9 declared. Imam bounced back in the One-Day Cup game against Warwickshire on Tuesday, scoring a steady 55 off 83 deliveries in a 138-run chase as Yorkshire cruised to a win with five wickets in hand and nearly 18 overs to spare. Imam registered triple figures in the very next match, against Northamptonshire on Friday, scoring at more than a run a ball during his innings. Opting to bat first, Yorkshire lost Adam Lyth in the third over before Imam and William Luxton added 83 runs for the second wicket. After the latter was run out by George Bartlett, Imam and James Wharton added 158 runs for the third wicket. After Wharton was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal, Imam added 74 runs for the fourth wicket with Matthew Revis, before being dismissed by Liam Guthrie. Riding on his 159-run knock and half-centuries from Wharton and Revis, Yorkshire posted 374/5. Imam took just 37 more deliveries after reaching his half-century to notch up his 11th List A hundred, striking 13 fours along the way. Imam hammered 159 off 130 balls, including two sixes and 20 boundaries, at an impressive strike rate of 122.3. The innings marked Imam's highest List A score, surpassing his previous best of 151, which he scored in an ODI against England six years ago. Imam has featured in 75 ODIs for Pakistan, amassing 3,152 runs at an average of 47, including nine hundreds in the format. For the record, Chahal gave away 69 runs in his 10 overs in Friday's game while picking the sole wicket of Wharton. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
