More info A couple who found a mysterious bottle on a beach in County Kerry, opened it up to find a 13-year-old note that would in time reveal to them a blossoming love story. Kate and John Gay were on a beach clean-up on Scraggane Bay, a fishing port on the Maharees Peninsula, where they discovered the mysterious parcel. When they opened up the bottle, they found a letter from the year 2012, and in it contained a letter from a mysterious couple. The letter told the tale of a couple, Anita and Brad, who had enjoyed a lovely day out to Bell Island, Canada. It said: 'Anita and Brad's day trip to Bell Island. Today, we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other, at the edge of the island. If found, please call us on…' This one simple message had travelled an incredible 300,000km (186,411m) over its 13-year journey from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's easternmost province, to Scraggane Bay. Following the discovery of the letter, which went 4,680 days before it was read, Kate and John showed fellow members of the Creative Ireland Project Maharees Heritage and Conservation, before deciding to ring the number. Several failed attempts later and they decided to try another tactic, Facebook, which brought better results. After several inquiries, Anita got in touch an informed the Irish crew of wonderful news. It turned out that, four years after the letter was sent, she and Brad had gotten married and were still together after nine-years of marriage. What's more, the couple are now settled in Newfoundland, the same area from which they sent their romantic and happy letter. Following the discovery, Brad has gone public and spoken to RTE radio's Morning Ireland show to talk about how he feels being a famous figure, and how the story means he and Anita now have new friends. He said: 'We were just young people in love. We're now older people in love. We're glad that the story got out. We're meeting new friends because of it and hopefully we'll get back to Ireland soon.' Brad also told the Guardian about how quickly everything has erupted following the story. He told the publication: 'It's been a pretty whirlwind 48 hours. It was Monday night and I was just putting our youngest son to bed and my phone was ding, ding, ding, ding, which was really unusual. 'Then I could hear Anita laughing in the other room. Her phone was doing the same thing. I came out and she was like: 'You cannot believe this.'

John and Kate Gay were participating in a beach clean-up at Scraggane Bay, a quaint fishing port in County Kerry, when they made the intriguing find. ‌ Inside the bottle was a heartfelt note from a duo named Anita and Brad, recounting a cherished evening they spent dining on Bell Island in Canada. ‌ The message read: "Anita and Brad's day trip to Bell Island. Today, we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other, at the edge of the island. If found, please call us on.." Remarkably, the letter had embarked on a 300,000km odyssey across the Atlantic, taking 13 years to journey from Newfoundland and Labrador to its discovery spot in County Kerry. ‌ After unearthing the letter, which remained unread for 4,680 days, Kate and John shared their find with fellow members of the Creative Ireland Project Maharees Heritage and Conservation, before deciding to dial the number, Dublin Live reports. Anita responded with an incredible update, revealing that she and Brad had tied the knot four years after sending their bottled message adrift. ‌ Nine years later, the couple are still together and have made their home in Newfoundland - the very location from which they originally posted that loved-up letter. Their story has since gone viral, with Brad appearing on RTE radio's Morning Ireland show to share his delight that the message in a bottle was found all these years later. ‌ He shared: "We were just young people in love. We're now older people in love. We're glad that the story got out. We're meeting new friends because of it and hopefully we'll get back to Ireland soon." And speaking to The Guardian, Brad described the breakneck speed at which things have developed since their story went public. He revealed: "It's been a pretty whirlwind 48 hours. It was Monday night and I was just putting our youngest son to bed and my phone was ding, ding, ding, ding, which was really unusual. "Then I could hear Anita laughing in the other room. 'Love story' - Message in a bottle found in Kerry after 12 years at sea

A message in a bottle that spent nearly 13 years traversing the Atlantic Ocean has washed up on the shores of Co Kerry. The note, encapsulated by a couple during a date on Bell Island, Newfoundland in September 2012, was discovered on a clean-up at Scraggane Bay, in the Magharees. It travelled over 3,000 kilometres, during which time Barack Obama finished out his first and later a second term in office, followed by a term each for Donald Trump and Joe Biden, a worldwide pandemic and Mr Trump subsequently returned to office. The handwritten message, posted in a wine bottle on 14 September, reads: "Antia and Brad day trip to Bell Island today, we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other, at the edge of the island." It implores whoever finds the bottle to "please call us" on the number provided. After 4,680 days, Brad and Anita received that call, after the message was uncorked by another couple, Kate and John Gay, who discovered it in a coastal clean-up. They opened it along with their Creative Ireland Project Maharees Heritage and Conservation group members, at a meeting held yesterday evening. The burning questions on their minds before making the call were 'where are they now?' and 'are they still a couple?' They said: "We were holding our breath for a happy ending to this love story." After the number rang out multiple times, the group posted on their Facebook page, with a call out for anyone who knew Anita or Brad to get in touch. Late last night, Anita, from the message, who has connections to Co Mayo, got in contact. "They got married in 2016 and they are still together," Martha Farrell of the Maharees Conservation Association said, adding that the couple are now living happily together in Newfoundland. She described it as a "tremendous story" which has since gone viral on their Facebook page. Ms Farrell added that the "love story" has led to other couples in the Canadian province getting in touch with their own stories of sending messages in bottles into the Atlantic Ocean.
