Message in a bottle found on popular beach leads to incredible discovery

Daily Mirror3 days ago
A handwritten letter travelled 300,000km across the Atlantic before being discovered on a popular beach in Ireland. And now the special note has led to another amazing find
A couple's stroll along a popular beach turned into an unexpected treasure hunt when they stumbled upon a bottle hiding a long-lost romantic tale.
John and Kate Gay were participating in a beach clean-up at Scraggane Bay, a quaint fishing port in County Kerry, when they made the intriguing find.

Inside the bottle was a heartfelt note from a duo named Anita and Brad, recounting a cherished evening they spent dining on Bell Island in Canada.

The message read: "Anita and Brad's day trip to Bell Island. Today, we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other, at the edge of the island. If found, please call us on.."
Remarkably, the letter had embarked on a 300,000km odyssey across the Atlantic, taking 13 years to journey from Newfoundland and Labrador to its discovery spot in County Kerry.

After unearthing the letter, which remained unread for 4,680 days, Kate and John shared their find with fellow members of the Creative Ireland Project Maharees Heritage and Conservation, before deciding to dial the number, Dublin Live reports.
Despite initial setbacks and multiple failed attempts to reach the number provided, the couple resorted to Facebook, where they hit the jackpot.
Anita responded with an incredible update, revealing that she and Brad had tied the knot four years after sending their bottled message adrift.

Nine years later, the couple are still together and have made their home in Newfoundland - the very location from which they originally posted that loved-up letter.
Their story has since gone viral, with Brad appearing on RTE radio's Morning Ireland show to share his delight that the message in a bottle was found all these years later.

He shared: "We were just young people in love. We're now older people in love. We're glad that the story got out. We're meeting new friends because of it and hopefully we'll get back to Ireland soon."
And speaking to The Guardian, Brad described the breakneck speed at which things have developed since their story went public.
He revealed: "It's been a pretty whirlwind 48 hours. It was Monday night and I was just putting our youngest son to bed and my phone was ding, ding, ding, ding, which was really unusual.
"Then I could hear Anita laughing in the other room. Her phone was doing the same thing. I came out and she was like: 'You cannot believe this."

Cops reveal how girl, 5, plunged 50ft from Disney Dream cruise ship before hero dad leapt into water to save her

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) COPS have revealed how a five year old girl fell into the sea from a Disney cruise ship in a terrifying incident. Her hero dad, 37, managed to keep her afloat for 20 minutes before rescue services arrived at the scene. But the Florida Sheriff's Office has now shared its findings on how exactly the nightmare incident unfolded. Officials say that the girl had been sitting on a railing and fell into the sea when she lost her balance. Her father did not see the incident to start with, and was alerted to the situation when his wife made him aware. "After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter," a Sheriff's Office spokesperson said. Crucially, the report has debunked online speculation that her dad had intentionally placed her on the railing to take photos. The Broward Sheriff's Office said the five-year-old fell "backwards through a porthole" by herself after losing her balance. Witnesses heard the mother screaming and saying "she's five and can't swim". Once alert to the incident, the dad quickly leapt to the rescue and managed to keep his daughter afloat for 20 minutes, according to detectives. Hundreds of passengers watched on as the terrifying events unfolded. Passenger Monica Shannon told the Daily Mail that "the parents were playing shuffleboard and the girl was climbing on the railings. "And as she went to climb up again she flew off." She added that high winds on the day could have contributed to the child falling into the ocean. The ship's captain notified passengers of the incident once the rescue effort was complete. A Disney Cruise Lines spokesperson said: "The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. "We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. "We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols." 5 Child reportedly fell overboard on Disney cruise Credit: Facebook/Kevin Furuta

Dating app horror: I discovered he got a girl pregnant after finding him on Bumb

I stared at my phone in disbelief. I'd been sent my recent ex's Bumble profile via a friend of a friend and at the very top of his bio it read: 'Dad to be'. We'd only broken up about four months ago, and granted it was my decision to end the relationship, but it seemed so soon. At just 20 years old I thought it surely had to be a joke. So, my curiosity got the better of me and I dropped him a message and straight up asked him if it was true. Yes it is , he wrote. He went on to tell me that in his 'rebound' relationship after me, he'd only been using 'the pullout' method, and it hadn't gone to plan. The real shocker? This happened about two weeks after we'd broken up. The woman, who was a few years older than him had decided to keep the baby, even though it was clear they weren't going to stay together. Honestly, all power to her. This was why he was on Bumble looking for his forever person, and in fairness, I saluted him for being upfront about his situation. He was also still being very supportive to the mother of his child and is, to this day, from what I can see from sporadic Facebook posts, a great dad. Love reading juicy stories like this? We can't wait for you to join us! To my shock, he asked if I'd ever be willing to get back together and be a stepmother to his kid, but as I'd barely entered my twenties, I didn't feel that was the path for me – plus none of the reasons we'd broken up had changed. Why am I telling you this story? Well, it came up in the ever hot topic of dating apps in the latest episode of Metro's sex and relationships podcast: Just Between Us. Our caller had met her long distance boyfriend-to-be (hopefully) on Hinge, which my co-host Diana Vickers and I agreed is the most relationship friendly app of the bunch. I met my long-term partner Sam on Hinge after coming across his dreamy blue eyes and making the first move, and nearly two years in, it's been my best decision to date. But with the benefits of dating apps come the downsides too – one of them being that cheating has become much easier. This is something both our caller Rebecca and I had experienced, and it really does suck. In fact, this negative experience gave us both a form of anxious attachment – but you can learn more about that in the episode. Before the apps, you had to actively go out and look for someone to cheat with, but in the age of Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Feeld and more, the temptation is just a tap or two away. Being scorned does feel like a pretty universal experience too, with YouGov stats indicating that 48% of Brits have been cheated on. Furthermore, 33% admit to cheating on their partner. Diana had a similar experience when she realised she'd nearly become The Other Woman. For most stand up comedians their arena is a stadium. For Ted Pullin, it's his kitchen table and a microphone wedged on the end of a wooden spoon. His quintessentially brutal British humour has exploded in popularity on TikTok, where he roasts people's dating profiles – no holds barred. The videos show screenshots of someone's dating profile and he then savagely picks them apart in excruciating detail, commenting on facial expressions, poses, outfit choices and poor chat. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video So I sent mine in to be roasted. Questioning which online persona from my profile would actually turn up on a date, he said: 'Will it be the f**k-off-face dog-thief or will it be the melanin intolerant Brit abroad?' Honestly, who knows? I got called out for attempting to flex my celebrity following, but upon hearing it consists of John Cena, Ted said: 'If I was a nine-year-old boy, that would get me really excited.' Want to see what else was wrong with my profile? Read more here. 'There was a guy and we were chatting online but he wouldn't meet me again and I didn't understand why,' she says on the podcast. More Trending 'Then I saw he'd posted a picture of him and his partner that moved in with him… I don't know if it worked out because he's been trying to reach out again.' But our caller Rebecca's story is proof that dating apps do still work in 2025, despite claims that they're dying. You've just got to have your red flag radar on in your search for The One.
