Millcreek couple concerned over damage from power crews costs them thousands

A Millcreek couple is raising concerns after power line maintenance has left their yard littered with fallen trees, and they're left to fix the mess. Daniel and Joan Hall have been living in their Millcreek house for almost 30 years, and they said power line maintenance crews have dropped fallen trees in their backyard on several occasions without cleaning them up. Crescent Hose Company looks to cut response times with 'Knox Box' technology The couple said they've paid anywhere between $6,000 and-8,000 of their own money to fix the mess over the years. Wednesday crews came to trim a couple of trees, resulting in damage to their shed and garden, and they said they've had enough. Erie students create their own cooking shows highlighting regional food 'It's still a hardship for us, and you maintain your property and try to make it look nice, and then something like this happens, and it's just going to cost more money to try and make it look good again. It's discouraging,' Joan told us. The Halls said they've tried calling both Millcreek Township and Penelec about their issues, but haven't made much progress. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Crescent Hose Company looks to cut response times with ‘Knox Box' technology

Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time, and sometimes a locked building can make it harder for first responders to react in a timely manner. But what's known as a Knox Box Rapid Entry System can solve that issue, and the Crescent Hose Company in North East is looking to get more installed across the area. Bayfront Maritime Centera kickss off community boating season 'It basically allows the fire departments to have a set of keys, but it's secured on the premises of the building. So essentially, if we roll up on a call and there's no one from there to let us in, it can save some time, money, and essentially lives,' said Damian Trusty, Rescue Lieutenant with the Crescent Hose Company. Trusty said Knox Boxes are often found in factories or multi-residential buildings, but currently fewer than 10 businesses in North East have them installed. The box itself is a red and black wall-mounted safe installed outside of a building or business. First responders have a key of their own to access the safe, and when they open it, a set of keys to the locked building can be found inside, which allows first responders to quickly enter a building without having to break anything. 'It makes our response times a lot quicker. It helps us gain access quicker to put water on fire, to get to a patient if need be. On the flip side of that, the businesses, it can save them money, potentially, if it's a late-night call, we don't have anyone around, and we have a reason to think that we need to get in there urgently, we can get in there urgently without using methods that would damage property,' said Trusty. He said his fire department has already used Knox Boxes for several fire alarms and EMS calls, but so far, no working fires. Crescent Hose Company acquires new ladder truck

For some volunteer fire departments, it can be tough to keep up financially with the latest fire fighting technology. But thanks to the community's support and the dedication of the volunteers with the North East Fire Department, Crescent Hose Company now has a state-of-the-art ladder truck ready to respond to calls. 'It comes down to we do the cherry fest every year, and every sausage sub, every basket of fries or chicken tenders or whatever it is that you buy helps the fire department. It took 25 years' worth of that for us to be able to help get this truck on the ground,' said Mike Kelley, Crescent Hose Company rescue chief. Kelley said the new truck arrived at the station about three weeks ago. Remains Cambridge Springs World War II vet coming home After an in-depth training program, this truck and volunteer firefighters are ready for their next call. The ladder stretches 107 feet into the sky at a 35-degree angle, and it's going to help the firefighters fight larger fires with a growing industry in the North East area. The ladder truck can pump 2,000 gallons of water per minute, but it can also help firefighters access some hard-to-reach places. 'The height of the ladder is the biggest thing. We have a lot of industry in North East and the industry is growing, so we have larger buildings; we have more buildings than we used to have,' said Kelley. 'We needed a bigger truck with a bigger pump on it to handle if we have to knock down a fire in one of these larger, industrial locations.' Downtown Erie, Presque Isle water taxi service set to return in near future Kelley said the ladder will also come in handy if they have to evacuate people from high-up windows. According to one lieutenant, getting the truck set up is a quick and easy process. 'It's a lot quicker setup time, it maneuvers a lot easier, a lot faster with everything. It's just a beast,' said Donovan Skelly, Crescent Hose Company lieutenant. Skelly said the truck is a huge improvement compared to their last ladder truck. The ladder truck has already responded to one call so far, and the rescue chief said it's ready to serve the North East community. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
