Hyundai Records 7.63 % YoY Decline In May'25, Sells 58,701 Units

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) recorded total monthly sales of 58,701 units in May 2025, comprising domestic sales of 43,861 units and export sales of 14,840 units. During the same month last year, Hyundai Motor India managed to sell 63,551 units that included 49,151 unit sales in the domestic market and export sales of 14,400 units. This indicates that Hyundai has suffered a 7.63 percent decline in YoY sales in May 2025. However, the positive news is that the brand registered a 3.06 percent growth in export sales, compared to May'24. Commenting on HMIL sales, Mr. Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, HMIL, said, "HMIL's total sales volume for May 2025 stood at 58,701 units. May is a month of our routine week-long biannual maintenance shutdown at our Chennai manufacturing facility, which affects the availability of a few critical models. We continue to witness consistent growth in our exports volume, and this is a testament to the 'Make in India, Made for the World' philosophy that we passionately uphold. Going forward, we remain hopeful of a steady increase in demand for both domestic as well as international shipments with reduced uncertainty on the geo-political front and improved macro-economic situation." If we consider the Month-on-Month data, Hyundai sold 44,374 units in the domestic market in April'25, suggesting it suffered a 1.16 percent decline in May 2025. Though Hyundai is suffering from a decline, the brand has registered a positive response from the Creta. The Hyundai Creta has been the top-selling SUV for the past few months, which is likely to fuel more sales in the coming months. Also, Hyundai is planning to launch the updated avatar of the Venue with new features, safety upgrades, and more.

PODCAST: Hyundai Alcazar counts on diesel to make an impact

The frugal Grand Creta replacement is ready to take the fight to its Chinese rivals. The Hyundai Alcazar has officially replaced the Grand Creta in the Korean carmaker's local portfolio. The seven-seater SUV slots in above the Creta and underneath the Tucson in Hyundai's SUV family. The three-model range starts at R499 900 and offers a choice of two engines. A naturally aspirated petrol mill that makes 117kW of power and 190Nm of torque and an 85kW/250Nm 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both are hooked up to six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai Alcazar makes a Pitstop In this week's episode of The Citizen Motoring's Pitstop podcast, we take a closer look at two of the Hyundai Alcazar's main virtues. We believe the diesel engine and its seven-seat configuration give it a definite edge in a tough segment. While there are plenty of Chinese SUVs on offer at the same price point and even lower, they do not offer diesel powertrains. Oil-burners are getting few and far apart, with the recent discontinuation of the diesel Renault Duster a prime example. On paper, the Hyundai Alcazar's 85kW does not seem like a lot. But with 250Nm of torque to boot, there is no shortage of pulling power. ALSO READ: Hyundai Alcazar has an ace up its sleeve against Chinese SUVs Frugal sipper But by far the oil-burner's best attribute is its miserly fuel consumption. Hyundai claims that it will only sip 5.9 litres per 100km and it proved even more frugal during our launch drive. This is much lower compared to petrol-powered Chinese SUVs, which will make a big difference in the long run. In flagship Elite guise, the Alcazar boasts a jam-packed specification list. It features 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, rear window blinds, ventilated front seats, push-button start and LED lighting. A comprehensive set of safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, driver attention alert, forward collision avoidance assist, lane follow assist and rear cross traffic alert. The Hyundai Alcazar is sold with a seven-year/150 000km warranty and three-year/45 000km service plan.

Maruti Suzuki Escudo Coming This Diwali: All About New Creta, Seltos Rival

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch a new SUV which will likely be named 'Escudo' and is codenamed Y17. This model will compete in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment against. It will likely fill the gap between the Brezza and the Grand Vitara in Maruti's lineup and will be available at Arena dealerships. While it was initially designed as a 7-seater, Maruti has decided to focus on a 5-seater version to better meet market demand and compete against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Rumours suggest, originally Maruti Suzuki had planned to develop a new internal combustion engine (ICE) SUV that would be a 3-row, 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara. Test vehicles have been spotted on the roads, but the 7-seater version would have competed with vehicles such as the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, and Mahindra. The Escudo will share the Global-C platform with the Grand Vitara but will be slightly longer, likely providing more space in the cabin and simultaneously more boot space than both the Grand Vitara (373 liters) and the Creta (433 liters). In terms of engine options, the Escudo is expected to feature a 1.5-liter petrol engine delivering 101.65 hp and 139 Nm of torque, a CNG option providing 86.79 hp, and a strong hybrid variant with a total output of 113.97 hp. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, and an e-CVT for hybrids, with choices for both 2WD and 4WD (Suzuki AllGrip). The Escudo is expected to be priced lower than its competitors, with some variants positioned as cost-effective alternatives to the Creta and Seltos. Additionally, Toyota is likely to introduce a rebadged version of the upcoming Y17.

How India-UK FTA will affect prices The recently concluded India-UK Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) will have a major impact on the economies of both nations, but prices for the Range Rover and Defender models won't see a major drop as the Internet will have you believe. The India-UK FTA is expected to bring the taxation down from over 100 per cent to just 10 per cent. However, JLR's global best seller is already made in India, and that means there is likely going to be little change in prices. JLR commenced local assembly of the Range Rover LWB and Range Rover Sport last year, while it has been assembling the Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Velar in India for a while now. With the models already being assembled here, there will be no change in prices for the range. Also Read : Defender prices to drop by 50%?
