Manjrekar's Big Comparison For Jasprit Bumrah: 'One Bowler That Comes To Mind...'
Last Updated: Sanjay Manjrekar compared Jasprit Bumrah to Richard Hadlee for their common 'mastery' in their art. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised Jasprit Bumrah for his ability to consistently take wickets whenever he comes into the attack, comparing the Indian pace ace to New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee, the first player to reach 400 Test wickets. After India was bowled out for 471 in 113 overs, thanks to Shubman Gill's career-best 147 and Rishabh Pant's remarkable 134 – his seventh century in the format – England had to face a threatening Bumrah, who picked up 3-45. However, Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett added 122 runs for the second wicket, bringing some stability to England's innings as they ended the day at 209/3, trailing India by 262 runs. 'We've seen four centuries in the match so far — three from India and one from England — but which bowler has been truly special? For me, it's just Bumrah. The ability to manufacture a wicket every time he came into the attack is what stands out. The one bowler that comes to mind with that kind of impact is Sir Richard Hadlee. 'Hadlee played for a New Zealand team with a relatively weaker attack, but every time he bowled, you felt a wicket was imminent. The common thread between the two is mastery — when I watched Hadlee closely, he seemed like a true master of his trade. I get that same impression with Bumrah," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar. While Duckett was dismissed for 62, Pope overcame his usual nervous start to score his ninth Test century, featuring 13 fours. Pope had a reprieve on 60 when he tried to steer off Bumrah in the final session, but the Indian ace succeeded when Duckett chopped onto his stumps and fell for 62 off 94 balls. 'With Ollie Pope's hundred, for me, it was also Bumrah in the final over. Just look at this guy — the kind of wicket he took on a pitch like this. We saw during the 2023 Cricket World Cup how he distinguished himself from other fast bowlers, and here he is doing it again. The dismissal came with such ease, and that's something only Bumrah can produce. Ben Stokes does it for England to some degree, but this guy does it consistently," said Manjrekar. Just before stumps, Bumrah had Harry Brook give a top edge on a pull to mid-wicket but didn't get the wicket as replays showed he had overstepped for the third time in the over. He ended the day with an absolute ripper to surprise Brook with his length and angle. 'In that final over, with Harry Brook trying to survive, what happened was pure drama. We witnessed Bumrah's genius when he got Brook to pull a short ball he hadn't used at all throughout the innings. The setup was brilliant — delivery after delivery outside the off stump — and then came that surprise bouncer. Nowhere in Brook's mind would he have expected it. It came, and he instinctively played the shot," he added. (With IANS Inputs) About the Author Cricketnext Staff Location : Leeds, England First Published:

India Batting Coach Reveals: 'Shubman Gill Made Changes After Australia Tour'
Last Updated: Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has revealed that Shubman Gill made multiple changes to his technique after the BGT 2024-25. Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on Saturday revealed that Shubman Gill made several changes to his batting technique after a disappointing tour of Australia. Kotak said 'as soon as' he saw the new skipper batting in the nets ahead of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, he knew a lot had changed. Gill played three Tests in Australia, managing only 93 runs at an average of 18.60 in five innings. He crossed that mark in his first chance at Headingley, smashing 147 runs to top-score and lead the team from the front. His knock took the team to 471, in reply of which England ended Day 2 at 209/3. 'After Australia (tour) he has thought (about) certain things which he implemented," Kotak said in the post-day press conference. 'Because after (the) Australia (tour) and England series (followed by) Champions Trophy and then we had IPL, I wouldn't say that I had a lot of time to do things (with Gill). But obviously, he worked on certain things and as soon as I saw him in the nets, I did speak to him that 'you made certain changes' and he said yes. A lot of credit to him for analysing what he needs to do and I think he did it really well," Kotak added. The batting coach, who has taken over the responsibilities full-time since Abhishek Nayar's exit, also spoke about Rishabh Pant, who smashed 134 (178). Kotak said the innings was 'different' from Pant's usual uber-aggressive style but said he didn't have anything to do with it — it was all the wicketkeeper's plan. 'Rishabh Pant is someone who makes his own plans. He decides (the way) and (then) he bats. This innings was a little different than you would see him normally but honestly that is all his plans. The way he wanted to approach it and when he wanted to attack, he did (and just) because he plays aggressive (cricket) does not mean he cannot play defensive," Kotak said. Kotak further rued India's collapse from being 430/3 before Gill got out. 'It was a bit of a collapse, I would say, because batsmen were also there. From 430 for three to 471 all out, batsmen also got out in it, isn't it? So, it wasn't only the last five; it was a bit of a collapse. We were expecting better than that, but it can happen," he said. Dinesh Karthik Worried For Jasprit Bumrah: 'Others Need To Push Gill And...'
Last Updated: Dinesh Karthik is concerned about India's over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah and the impact it could have on his body. Dinesh Karthik is worried about India's overreliance on Jasprit Bumrah and the impact it can have on the fast-bowler's fitness. The former wicketkeeper-batter felt that the 'void' between Bumrah and the rest of the bowling attack was 'too much' on the second day of the Headingley Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, adding that it was high time that other bowlers 'pushed' skipper Shubman Gill and took the initiative. Just like several days on the tour of Australia last year, Bumrah was India's only wicket-taker on Sunday. He got three scalps for 48 runs in 13 overs as Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shardul Thakur all went wicketless in the remaining 36. Ollie Pope scored a century and Ben Duckett hit 62 as England finished the day at a good position of 209/3 with India's lead at 262 runs. 'In a day where there are hardly 60 overs bowled, Bumrah has already bowled 13. Every time you need a wicket, it has to be Bumrah. And he always does it for you so you get into that habit. Others need to find a way to definitely push the captain and say, 'I am ready, give me the ball, this is my plan, I want to do this'," Karthik added. Bumrah's troubles were compounded by two dropped catches and Harry Brook's wicket off a no-ball in the last over of the day. Prabhsimran Singh's Father On Dialysis Thrice A Week: 'Can't See The Pain...'
Curated By : Cricketnext Staff Last Updated: May 05, 2025, 12:45 IST Prabhsimran Singh (left) shares a light moment with his father. (IG/prabhsimran_84) Punjab Kings batter Prabhsimran Singh's father is on dialysis thrice a week with both his kidneys failing. Prabhsimran is in the midst of a breakout season with PBKS in the ongoing IPL 2025 having scored 437 runs from 11 innings at an average of 39.72 and a strike-rate of 170.03. The 22-year-old opener is currently the leading run-getter of the franchise this year as they target a top four finish and a first playoffs berth since 2014. Prabhsimran's father Surjit is reportedly in a lot of pain and only time he manages to smile is when he sees his son batting. 'The only time he smiles these days is when he sees Prabhsimran bat in the IPL," Satwinderpal Singh, Surjit's elder brother was quoted as saying by 'He is going through dialysis thrice a week. As an elder brother I can't see the pain he is enduring. I have to step out of the house when the doctors come home for the dialysis. Not a day has gone by that I have not prayed that it should not be my younger brother," he added. Satwinderpal says watching Prabhsimran bat is the only moment of solace for his younger brother, even inciting a reprimand or two if the PBKS batter ends up playing a rash shot. 'Before every Punjab Kings match, I carry him to the living room. We watch the match together, and every time the camera is on Simmu (Prabhsimran), he smiles. If Simmu scores, he keeps on smiling and laughing. In those moments, he forgets the pain he is in. If Simmu plays a rash shot, he shouts, ' khotte aaram naal khel (play sensibly)'," he said.
