Jadeja (53 not out off 102) and Washington (58 not out off 139) batted with determination to save the game, frustrating England's tired attack.
At tea, India were 322 for four, having added 99 runs in a wicketless afternoon session.
Ben Stokes, who looked threatening in his eight-over spell in the morning, couldn't maintain the intensity in the three overs he bowled in the second session.
In a 15-run over from Stokes, Washington hit the England captain for a six and four to reach his fifty, before Jadeja used the cut shot to complete his fifth half-century in six innings.
With limited batting left and Rishabh Pant injured, it's uncertain if India can secure a draw from this position.
England struggled as left-arm spinner Liam Dawson (0/70 in 39 overs) couldn't challenge the Indian left-handers enough, and Jofra Archer failed to break through after lunch.
The second new ball is now 38 overs old, making batting easier.
In the morning session, Shubman Gill scored a determined hundred after Stokes battled through pain to dismiss a well-set KL Rahul, leaving India at 223 for four at lunch.
Starting the day at 174 for two with a deficit of 137, India stayed on course for a draw thanks to Gill's fighting effort, who reached his fourth century of the series. The Indian captain fell just before lunch, with the visitors still trailing England by 88 runs.
Given India's precarious position and the series on the line, this could be Gill's most significant century if India manages to save the match and keep the series alive.
Expecting the ball to come in, Gill edged a delivery from Jofra Archer that shaped away slightly.
The 188-run partnership between Gill and Rahul (90 off 230) was finally broken when the latter was trapped in front by Stokes with a ball that stayed a bit low from length.
Shortly after, Stokes got one to bounce sharply from a similar length, causing Rahul considerable pain.
The rising ball first struck Gill's right thumb before hitting his helmet.
It was remarkable that Stokes, who was unfit to bowl on day four, managed an eight-over spell on day five despite discomfort in his right shoulder and hamstring. Like at Lord's, he ignored his injury-prone body to help his team.
The new ball was taken after the 80th over and led to Gill's dismissal. Jadeja could have been out first ball, but Joe Root couldn't hold on to a tough chance at first slip off Archer.
