Surveen Chawla does not follow a set process to approach her characters
Actress Surveen Chawla, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming streaming series 'Mandala Murders,' has said that she doesn't follow a process to get in and out of a character. The actress recently spoke with IANS, and said that while she doesn't have a process to approach a character, she makes sure to be 100% present mentally in the scene, and do justice to the truth of the moment. However, once the director calls for 'Cut,' the actress easily moves away from it. The actress told IANS, 'I don't have a process. And I don't take myself too seriously. I stopped taking myself too seriously, as Surveen, the person or as Surveen the actor, both. This happened over the course of time. Where I didn't understand the hoo-ha. Or the bubble that I had created in my mind about who I was. I feel it's so important to not have that world around you where you're so engrossed in that bubble. That you can't have a bird's eye view of who you really are. I honestly don't have a process of getting in. Or getting out of one'. The actress further mentioned that a character or a part has ever really lingered on with her after she is done, dusted, completed a part. She continued, 'I think my only process is to just internalise and familiarise myself with what is written on paper. To such a degree that it becomes like second nature. Rather first nature. And then second nature is when I go back home from the set. I think I'm very instinctive, spontaneous'. 'I just kind of get disconnected. There is no part that has hovered around my head. For me it's a job that when I'm at it, I'm just 100% present there', she added. Chawla recently opened up about her role in 'Criminal Justice Season 4,' calling her character Anju Nagpal the 'emotional core' of the series. Chawla shared that Anju is calm and composed on the outside but carries a storm within, making the character both challenging and deeply compelling to portray. In a recent interaction with IANS, the actress shared her thoughts on preparing for her roles and what drew her to the gripping narrative. Reflecting on her character in 'Criminal Justice 4,' Surveen stated, 'See, for me, Anju Nagpal, my character, is the emotional core, the epicentre, the emotional epicenter of the show. And I think she's calm; she's composed. She's in the midst of a storm but not letting it out, not letting it show. She's keeping it all suppressed inside of her.' 'And what drew me to the part, actually, was all of this and much more, which I can't reveal as we speak. But more than just the part, I think it's also the entire team, you know, with such fantastic actors like Pankaj ji, Zeeshan, Shweta, Mitaji, Barkha, and everybody on board.' India's most watched OTT show in 2025 so far has no big star, yet 27.7M views; beats Aashram, Panchayat, Squid Game 3
The world of OTT in India is now bigger than ever, with original shows and films releasing across multiple platforms almost every day. Spanning a wide range of genres and languages, OTT content is breaking boundaries and offering Indian audiences a wide range of choices to enjoy online. In this vast sea of content across platforms like Netflix, JioCinema, JioHotstar, ZEE5, Prime Video, and more, one show stood out in the second half of 2025, emerging as the most-watched original OTT show with over 27 million views. It wasn't Bobby Deol's Aashram, Jitendra Kumar's Panchayat, or even the global hit Squid Game 3. This series captured the attention of viewers nationwide with only one popular actor in the lead. The most viewed original OTT show is Pankaj Tripathi's Criminal Justice: A Family Matter, as per a Top 50 streaming originals in India list. Ormax Media has released its Top 50 streaming originals in India list for the first half of 2025. The ranking includes only original content that was released directly on streaming platforms, excluding licensed or dubbed titles. The viewership figures represent the number of unique individuals who watched at least one full episode of a series or a minimum of 30 minutes of a film on any streaming platform. Notably, the numbers reflect actual viewers, not the number of OTT accounts used, with each viewer counted only once, regardless of how many times they watched the particular show or episode. Topping the list is Pankaj Tripathi's Criminal Justice, Season 4 on JioHotstar, which attracted a massive 27.7 million viewers. The show returned with its new season, bringing back Pankaj Tripathi as lawyer Madhav Mishra. It also starred Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen Chawla, Khushboo Atre and Asha Negi. The first three episodes of Criminal Justice Season 4 were released on May 29, 2025. After the initial release, new episodes were released weekly. The show received a positive response from the critics and viewers. Taking the no 1 spot, Criminal Justice Season 4 surpassed hit shows, including Bobby Deol's Ek Badnaam Aashram Season 3 Part 2, which took the second place with 27.1 million viewers. Coming in third is Jitendra Kumar's much-anticipated Panchayat Season 4 on Amazon Prime Video, with a total viewership of 23.8 million. Following the top three, Jaideep Ahlawat's Paatal Lok on Amazon Prime Video bagged the fourth spot with 16.8 million viewers. In fifth place arrived the finale season of the Korean global sensation, Squid Game Season 3, drawing 16.5 million viewers. Others on the list were-- The Legend of Hanuman Season 6 with 16.2 million views, The Royals at 15.5 million views, The Secret of the Shiledars with 14.5 million views, Chidiya Udd at 13.7 million views and Jewel Thief with 13.1 million views.

‘They are not realistic actors': Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub on big Bollywood stars, Criminal Justice Season 4 and more
Actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub opens up about big Bollywood stars, his role as Dr Raj Nagpal in Criminal Justice Season 4 and why he still dreams of portraying poet Sahir Ludhianvi. Actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, known for his grounded performances, speaks about navigating moral grey zones, parenting with compassion, and why he doesn't see his acting style reflected in Bollywood's biggest stars. Q: Did embodying Dr Raj Nagpal in Criminal Justice Season 4 reshape your own ideas about paternal sacrifice and moral grey zones? A: Not exactly. I would just say that I understood the idea, and that is why I was able to be there and play the character. So, I think the process is generally the reverse for actors. It's not like while you are playing it, you understand that. You first need to understand it and then only you can play the character and perform it. So yeah, that would be the answer. Q: Name an improvised moment with Pankaj Tripathi (or any other actor from Criminal Justice Season 4) that slipped into the final cut and surprised even the crew. A: No, no. There wasn't because I did not have any dialogues as such. Not many dialogues, especially when I am with Pankaj bhai. But, I think the whole scene, I think that is how any scene happens. Like when he is sitting there and he is talking to me in jail when he comes to meet me. I think even that or maybe the small looks that we share while he is presenting his argument, and I am standing there and just looking there, here and there. I think that was all there. So, nothing like which surprised the audience. There was nothing like that. The crew, especially. I think everything was written there. So nothing like that. Q: You grew up in a multi-faith environment. Now, your child is growing up in a similar diversity. Which lesson from your childhood do you hope becomes her compass? A: I would say just be kind to everyone and do not differentiate between people in terms of caste, creed or religion or anything in that sense. Just be with people because they are humans, and be kind to them. I think that is what I grew up in, and I respect human beings and all the cultures. Q: You once joked you'd trade an arm to breathe life into Sahir Ludhianvi; which forgotten Ludhianvi verse would anchor that biopic's emotional spine? A: I think that would be… Actually, there are many. That is why I would love to play Sahir because I think he is one of the greatest poets. So, I think, but still what attracted me the most was: Ek shahenshah ne banwa ke Taj Mahal, Hum gareebon ki mohabbat ka udaya hai nazaak. That would be the best of Sahir. Q: Scrolling social media feeds can blur reality, especially for an actor. So, what simple offline habit grounds your perspective after heavy online chatter? A: I think it is reading. I still read books and I don't read from digital gadgets or anything. I like to touch the paper, read it and carry the book with me. I think that is something that brings you back to reality, and you see how the real world operates. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub on his love for books Q: You've worked with big stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, R Madhavan, Akshay Kumar, Kangana Ranaut, Diljit Dosanjh, Dhanush and many other big stars. Whose approach to acting is more similar to yours, and how? A: I don't think anyone's approach is similar to mine. They have their own style. Most of them are stylised actors. They are not realistic actors in that sense. So, I would say no one in this list. Criminal Justice Season 4, called A Family Matter, had its OTT release on May 29. The web series, also starring Pankaj Tripathi, Surveen Chawla and Asha Negi, is streaming on JioHotstar.
