Augustana wins NSIC, punches ticket to NCAA Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Augustana) – Augustana softball opened up the NSIC Tournament championship game in commanding and dominating fashion while turning up the defense to claim the 12-1 victory over Winona State in five innings. The hot performance punches the Vikings' ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the 30th time in program history and secures its fifth NSIC tournament title—its third in the last four seasons. AU collected 12 runs off 10 hits in the five-inning affair, led by Desi Cuevas and Ashton Dorman's two hits apiece. Andrea Cain, Stella Harber, Liz Dierks and Dorman each collected two RBI while the team combined for five walks drawn. Grace Glanzer took the win in the circle after five innings of work. She totaled six strikeouts alongside six fly outs and three groundouts against 22 batters faced, allowing just one unearned run. Competition flamed at the start as the first three Warriors were downed in order in the top of the inning and the Vikings exploded offensively. All nine batters in Augustana's lineup saw the plate in the first inning and it all started with Cain drawing a four-pitch walk. A base hit from Cuevas and a fielder's choice loaded up the bases and was followed by back-to-back-to-back singles from Dorman, Ella Cooper and Harber. Those three base hits brought in a combined five runners for Augustana, who took a commanding 5-0 lead with no outs yet in the inning and forced a Winona State pitching change. Norah Christiansen worked a walk off a 10-pitch at-bat and Sidney Smart drew a walk of her own to load the bases once again. Dierks singled to first base to score Harber and Christiansen would come in off a fielder's choice to firmly put the Vikings ahead 7-0 at the end of the inning. The Warriors put runners on first and second following a Viking error, soon scoring one run, but the effort would end there. AU struck again in the bottom of the third inning as Cuevas doubled to left center and came back around home off a base hit from Lexi Lander. Final nails in the coffin were placed in the bottom of the fourth by another hot inning from the Vikings. Cooper drew a walk and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt. A single down the left field line brought her home while a fielding error from WSU kept two runners on. Now ahead 9-0, a passed ball advanced those runners to second and third base, respectively. A fielder's choice scored another runner before Smart was caught stealing at home. Cain then stepped up to bat and continued her dominating weekend at the plate with a two-run homer over the left field fence. The rocket put the Vikings firmly ahead at 12-1 and the Warriors were quickly downed in the top half of the fifth inning to make it final and continue AU's postseason. After the tournament title was secured, Cain, Glanzer, Lander, Smart, Cooper and Cuevas were all honored on the 2025 NSIC All-Tournament Team. Sixth-inning surge leads Augie past MSU Moorhead

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AUGUSTANA) — Back-to-back homeruns combined with the powerful one-two punch in the circle pushed top-seeded Augustana Vikings over 10th-seeded MSU Moorhead 7-2 in the NSIC Softball Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Bowden Field. The Vikings combined for 11 hits in the affair as Andrea Cain, Ella Cooper and Lexi Lander each went 2-for-3 from the plate and five other Vikings tallied a hit apiece. Cain and Desi Cuevas smashed back-to-back homeruns in the sixth inning to put the Vikings firmly ahead. Cain, Cooper and Stella Harber all knocked out doubles and Cain led with four RBI as the team combined for three walks drawn. Grace Glanzer earned the win in the circle in 5.0 innings of work, improving to 22-6 on the year. She tallied three strikeouts with seven fly outs and four ground outs against 18 batters faced while allowing just one run. Lexi Lander collected her first save of the season after striking out four of 10 batters faced and allowing one unearned run 2.0 innings pitched. Augustana struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run after a drawn walk from Cain, a sacrifice bunt from Cuevas and a single from Lander to open up action. MSU Moorhead was downed in order in both the second and third innings and the AU advantage held until the Dragons soon tied up the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth. But that score wouldn't last long. In the bottom of the fifth, Liz Dierks singled to third and advanced on a throwing error to reach scoring position. The ensuing at-bat resulted in a rocketed double from Cain to left field off her first pitch and would score Dierks. Now ahead 2-1, the lead was one that Augustana would not rescind for the remainder of the game. Cooper doubled to kick off the sixth inning and Harber followed that up with a walk to put two on. After a fly out advanced the runner to third, Sidney Smart singled through the right side to score one and advanced another to second base. Facing a two-out situation with two on, Cain slammed a shot over the center field fence, smacking the scoreboard as she hammered in a three-run homerun. The dagger forced a pitching change for the Dragons but that didn't stop Cuevas. On the very next pitch of the game, Cuevas slammed a solo homer to left center in her very first pitch of the at-bat. The electric performance at the plate from the Vikings resulted in a five-run inning and a 7-1 lead for the top seed. The Dragons singled and drew a walk to start the top of the seventh before heavy rain in the area forced a weather delay. When play resumed, MSUM was able to score one run to close in. Lander then collected three strikeouts off swinging batters to end the game and secure the 7-2 win. Funeral for Victorville sheriff's deputy killed in pursuit crash takes place Thursday

Funeral services are taking place Thursday for San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., who was killed during a Victorville high speed pursuit on March 17. A procession will carry Cuevas' body from a San Bernardino mortuary to the Ontario Convention Center for the 11 a.m. service, where family and invited guests are to attend. Cuevas lost his life during an on-duty fatal traffic collision. He was chasing a stolen vehicle but collided with another car at an intersection and then crashed into a light pole. The 36-year-old law enforcement veteran served at the Victorville City Sheriff's Station for the last three years, holding assignments on patrol and on the gang team. The sheriff's department said Cuevas loved what he chose as his profession. Sheriff Shannon Dicus said earlier that family members and fellow law enforcement described Cuevas as a devout family man and a "cop's cop who has the ability to go between dealing with the most hardcore gang member to turning around and being able to talk to a child and make sure that they felt safe and knew they were protected." Cuevas leaves behind his wife, two children, his parents and two siblings. "The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was blessed to have such an amazing individual as a part of our family. He will be missed, but never forgotten, as he impacted all of us," the department wrote in a statement. Thursday's 11 a.m. service will be livestreamed on the sheriff's department's YouTube page . The suspect behind the wheel of the car that Deputy Cuevas was following, Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., 22 of San Bernardino, was arrested for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer causing death or serious injury.
