Sixth-inning surge leads Augie past MSU Moorhead
The Vikings combined for 11 hits in the affair as Andrea Cain, Ella Cooper and Lexi Lander each went 2-for-3 from the plate and five other Vikings tallied a hit apiece. Cain and Desi Cuevas smashed back-to-back homeruns in the sixth inning to put the Vikings firmly ahead.
Cain, Cooper and Stella Harber all knocked out doubles and Cain led with four RBI as the team combined for three walks drawn.
Grace Glanzer earned the win in the circle in 5.0 innings of work, improving to 22-6 on the year. She tallied three strikeouts with seven fly outs and four ground outs against 18 batters faced while allowing just one run. Lexi Lander collected her first save of the season after striking out four of 10 batters faced and allowing one unearned run 2.0 innings pitched.
Augustana struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run after a drawn walk from Cain, a sacrifice bunt from Cuevas and a single from Lander to open up action.
MSU Moorhead was downed in order in both the second and third innings and the AU advantage held until the Dragons soon tied up the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
But that score wouldn't last long.
In the bottom of the fifth, Liz Dierks singled to third and advanced on a throwing error to reach scoring position. The ensuing at-bat resulted in a rocketed double from Cain to left field off her first pitch and would score Dierks.
Now ahead 2-1, the lead was one that Augustana would not rescind for the remainder of the game.
Cooper doubled to kick off the sixth inning and Harber followed that up with a walk to put two on. After a fly out advanced the runner to third, Sidney Smart singled through the right side to score one and advanced another to second base.
Facing a two-out situation with two on, Cain slammed a shot over the center field fence, smacking the scoreboard as she hammered in a three-run homerun. The dagger forced a pitching change for the Dragons but that didn't stop Cuevas.
On the very next pitch of the game, Cuevas slammed a solo homer to left center in her very first pitch of the at-bat. The electric performance at the plate from the Vikings resulted in a five-run inning and a 7-1 lead for the top seed.
The Dragons singled and drew a walk to start the top of the seventh before heavy rain in the area forced a weather delay. When play resumed, MSUM was able to score one run to close in. Lander then collected three strikeouts off swinging batters to end the game and secure the 7-2 win.
UP NEXTAugustana will return to the field on Friday afternoon to take on the fifth-seeded Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at 12 p.m. on Bowden Field.

Wagaman drives fall short as do the Marlins in a 7-4 loss to the Cardinals
Eric Wagaman launched the fourth pitch he saw Tuesday night into right field, and for a few seconds, it appeared he might have homered for the third consecutive game. It wound up only being a long fly out, gloved at the edge of the warning track. His next time up, he lined out deep to left. Two big swings by the Marlins first baseman, who's found recent success at the plate after some struggles. That's been one of the few positives for the Marlins, who fell 7-4 to the Cardinals on Tuesday for their 12th loss in 16 games. It also marked their fifth straight series loss. Wagaman entered Tuesday's game with five hits in his last 11 at-bats, a stretch that included two home runs, a triple and three RBI. 'I think it's in a good spot,' he said of his swing. 'I feel like most of this year it's just been a constant search for it, like having it for short spurts and then losing it again. But hopefully it's in a good spot, and we can keep up the consistency.' Wagaman said he was 'lunging forward' on his swings and as a result, 'everything was getting sped up because I was going towards the ball.' He worked on remaining centered in the batter's box and eventually started making hard contact on balls hit in the air. That helped him avoid getting too frustrated when he wasn't getting hits, he said. 'It's easier to have that confidence when you do make loud outs, for sure,' Wagaman said. 'You're not going to hit everything perfect. But when it's just at-bat after at-bat of mishits after mishits, that's when it gets really frustrating. Because I know I'm capable of hitting the ball hard consistently.' Wagaman couldn't come through in the sixth, however. He struck out swinging with runners on first and second and two outs and the Cardinals leading 6-4. Otto Lopez had cut the deficit in half with a two-run single to center two batters earlier. The Cardinals battered Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, who lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up six earned runs and a career-high 11 hits. 'My secondary pitches, curveball and slider, were not landing in the strike zone,' Cabrera said via team interpreter Luis Dorante Jr. 'It made me throw more fastballs and sinkers and they were taking advantage of that.' Said McCullough: 'I give Cabby a lot of credit…to buckle down and try to give us as many outs as he could in a game where he certainly didn't have what is his typical control and command of his secondaries.' Right-hander Cal Quantrill was placed on outright waivers Tuesday. He will be owed the remainder of his $3.5 million salary. Quantrill had a 5.50 ERA in 24 starts this season, including an 11.25 ERA in three starts this month. Left-hander Cade Gibson was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville — he allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings Tuesday — after right-hander Anthony Bender was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 18) with right tibial stress reaction. Realmuto, Schwarber and Stott homers power Phillies to a 6-4 win over Mariners
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. Realmuto's homer was a no-doubt blast to left field on a first-pitch sinker from Seattle reliever Matt Brash (1-2). Realmuto, who hit his ninth homer, reached base three times and had three RBIs. He also had an RBI single and reached on a catcher's interference call on Mariners backstop Mitch Garver. It was the third time in a month the Phillies were on the positive side of a catcher's interference call. Schwarber opened the scoring in the first inning with his 44th homer. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs. Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. David Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Phillies since Game 5 of the 2022 World Series. Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his his 22nd save and sixt5h with Philly since being acquired at the trade deadline. Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez had RBI doubles for Seattle, which has lost four straight and six of seven.
