Vikings take down Marauders
BISMARCK, N.D. (Augustana) – Augustana softball turned up the heat against UMary on Saturday afternoon, taking back-to-back conference wins (12-4, 16-0) in convincing fashion at the Sanford Sports Complex. The Vikings move to 29-9 overall and 11-3 in the NSIC while the Marauders drop to 9-30 and 2-12. GAME ONE: No. 13 Augustana 12, UMary 4The bats were alive and sizzling for both teams in game one, but it was the dominant swinging from the Vikings in the beginning three innings of action that set the pace and propelled AU to a 12-4 win. Andrea Cain sent a homerun shot to left center in the first at-bat of action, simultaneously kicking off quite the showing from Augustana. Ashton Dorman then doubled to score Desi Cuevas from second base and made it home off a single from Stella Harber single. The final two runs of the innings came in off a base hit from Norah Christiansen, scoring two to put AU ahead 5-0 after one half of action. Cuevas knocked a double down the right field line, helping bring around Cain, who scored off an error. Lexi Lander followed that up with another double to bring Cuevas home and take the 7-0 lead. The third inning started with another homerun shot to left center, courtesy of Christiansen. Back-to-back-to-back singles brought Briana Lee across home plate before a groundout and another single scored two more. With runners on second and first, Harber knocked a hit to right field to score the fifth run of the inning, forcing a 12-0 game. UMary rallied in response with three runs on a two-out situation, before adding in a homerun in the fourth. But the scoring would go no further and Augustana would take the 12-4 win in five innings. Cain went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate—including a homerun—while Lander, Harber and Christiansen all added in two hits apiece. Three Vikings reached on a walk while three also each logged a stolen base. Grace Glanzer took the win in the circle, improving to 14-6 on the season. She allowed four runs and struck out six batters through four innings of work. GAME TWO: No. 13 Augustana 16, UMary 0It was all Vikings in the second half of the doubleheader, as the team went a combined 18-for-33 from the plate and scored 16 unanswered runs in the shutout to take the series sweep. With runners on second and third, a groundout and a double to center field scored both and was soon followed up by a three-run rocket of a shot from Harber, putting the visitors ahead 5-0. A single, a double and a walk loaded up the bases for AU in the top of the second inning and, despite a double play, two would score. Ella Cooper knocked an RBI single to left field, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring off a single from Harber to take the 8-0 lead. The Marauders were downed in order in the bottom half of the inning and, in the top of the third, Augustana lit it up. Bases were loaded after back-to-back singles and a walk, bringING Lander up to bat. She reached on an error while two runners touched home plate and Dorman rocketed a three-run homer to left field to clear the bases. Domination continued with a solo homerun from Cooper and an RBI single from Liz Dierks, putting the Vikings up 15-0. For good measure, Lander homered to left field for the final run scored of the evening, allowing AU to take home a 16-0 victory in five innings. Cain, Dorman and Harber each went 3-for-4 from the plate as Cooper, Dorman, Harber and Lander all knocked out a homerun. Dorman and Harber led with four RBI apiece and Cain tallied two stolen bases. Lander took the win in the circle, striking out three batters, allowing just two hits and no runs through her three innings. Jaelyn Garcia made her first appearance on the mound, collecting two strikeouts in two innings. Augustana returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a conference doubleheader against Minot State with a 12 p.m. start time.

3 takeaways as the Chicago White Sox win a series, including how the rookie catchers are faring
Miguel Vargas drilled a 2-1 sinker over the left-field wall for a two-run home run in the first inning. The Chicago White Sox didn't get another hit until Chase Meidroth singled in the ninth. Meidroth later scored as part of a three-run rally, but the Sox couldn't complete the comeback in a 7-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals in front of 22,137 on Sunday at Rate Field. 'Great example of continuing to battle,' manager Will Venable said. The Vargas home run gave the Sox a 2-0 lead. Salvador Perez tied it with a two-run home run in the fourth against Mike Vasil, who made his first major-league start. Jonathan India put the Royals ahead in the seventh with an RBI double. Maikel Garcia collected an RBI single later in the inning, making it 4-2. India drove in another run in the ninth with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run home run in the inning, extending the Royals' lead to 7-2. The first five batters reached in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox chipped away at the deficit. They loaded the bases with two outs, but Carlos Estévez struck out Tim Elko to end the game. 'We didn't get the result we wanted, but it's good that we fought through the whole game,' Vargas said. The Sox (22-44) settled for taking two out of three in the series. Here are three takeaways from Rate Field. The Sox scored five runs in the eighth inning of Friday's 7-2 victory, which included a two-run single by Luis Robert Jr. Edgar Quero provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-1 win. Sunday, the late offensive production came in the ninth. Trailing by five runs, Mike Tauchman led off the inning with a walk against reliever Trevor Richards. Singles by Meidroth and Andrew Benintendi followed. Vargas drew a bases-loaded walk. Quero greeted Estévez with an RBI single, making it 7-4. Austin Slater hit a liner that appeared to be headed to left field, but Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. made a diving catch for the first out. 'The athleticism is incredible to watch,' Venable said of Witt. 'He's got a great feel for the game.' A run scored when Robert grounded into a fielder's choice. Josh Rojas walked, loading the bases for Elko. With the rain starting to fall harder, Estévez struck out Elko. 'They continue to focus and continue to grind,' Venable said. 'Credit to (the Royals) for pitching really well and credit to our guys for continuing to stay in there and fight.' Tyler Alexander's day began in Milwaukee. A few hours later, he was on the mound for the Sox. 'Today has been a whirlwind,' Alexander said. The Sox signed the left-hander to a one-year, $760,000 deal on Sunday. 'Signing at noon, then an hour and a half (rideshare trip) from Milwaukee to here, then bullpen in the third inning and pitching in the fourth inning,' Alexander said. 'My first time doing all of that, but it was — try to keep a level head and not freak out too much.' Alexander allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. He entered with one out in the fourth, following Vasil. 'We had been talking to the White Sox prior to today so we knew that if I signed, there would be a good chance of me throwing today,' Alexander said. 'So mentally, I had prepared for it. 'Just try to go with the flow and I had faced the Royals already this year. I have a little cheat sheet scouting reports that I've been reading over. I was prepared to the best of my ability.' Alexander, 30, went 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 21 games (four starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers this season before being designated for assignment on June 1. He's pitched for the Detroit Tigers (2019-23), Tampa Bay Rays (2024) and Brewers (2025). 'The guy literally just shows up and steps right into an outing, which is impressive,' Venable said. 'And I think that just speaks to what's attractive about him, which is the guy's been around, a nice mix from the left side, can pitch in multiple different roles.' In Sunday's corresponding moves, the Sox placed reliever Jared Shuster on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his left hand. His stint is retroactive to Thursday. To make room for Alexander on the 40-man roster, the Sox transferred left-hander Fraser Ellard to the 60-day injured list. Ellard has been on the IL since May 4 with a left lat strain. The youth movement continued for the Sox during the weekend with Kyle Teel's promotion to the majors. The 23-year-old catcher went 1-for-2 with two walks in his debut on Friday and collected two more hits as a designated hitter on Saturday. 'With Kyle, I've seen him play in a B game on a backfield in spring training and then playing that game (Friday) night, and he brought the same energy and focus to both types of environments,' Venable said before Saturday's game. Teel went 0-for-2 Sunday. The Sox got a lift offensively from Quero, also a rookie catcher, with his RBI single in the ninth. The plan is for the pair to split time behind the plate. 'I think that we're lucky that these guys are special players,' Venable said. 'Certainly they need support and help, but they go out there and they're capable and have the capacity to do a lot of the things that we're asking them to do. Credit to those guys for being outstanding players.'

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — George Kirby struck out a career-high 14 during seven innings of two-hit ball, and the Seattle Mariners snapped their five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Kirby (1-3) issued no walks while retiring both his first 11 and his final 10 batters. His strikeouts were the most by a Mariners pitcher since James Paxton had 16 in May 2018 , and he matched Miami's Max Meyer for the most strikeouts in a major league game this season. Donovan Solano drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth, and Randy Arozarena had an early RBI double among his three hits as the Mariners avoided a series sweep with their fourth win in 14 games. Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer in the fourth for the Halos, who struck out 18 times overall while losing for only the second time in six games. Andrés Muñoz earned his 18th save, returning from a week off and rebounding from back-to-back blown save opportunities in which he allowed his first earned runs of the entire season. Tyler Anderson (2-3) yielded eight hits with six strikeouts while pitching into the fifth inning of his ninth consecutive winless appearance. Arozarena hit a 345-foot single in the fifth when he failed to hustle out of the box, but he stole second and scored on Jorge Polanco's two-out single. Solano added another RBI single to chase Anderson. Key moment Trout was the Angels' first baserunner with a two-out single, and Ward immediately followed with his 18th homer. Kirby regrouped and struck out Chris Taylor with a perfect slider on the corner. Key stat Trout tied Rafael Palmeiro's major league record of 435 total bases against Seattle before scoring his 145th run against the Mariners to tie Rickey Henderson for that career record.
