Cyberpunk 2 release date narrowed down as production ramps up

CD Projekt has confirmed pre-production is underway on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which they've given a new name. We've known developer CD Projekt has been working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 for a while now, as one of several projects planned by the developer after The Witcher 4. The sequel to the sci-fi role-player has previously been referred to as Project Orion, but the studio provided a significant update on the title (quite literally) in its latest Q1 2025 earnings call. In the report, CD Projekt confirmed development on Project Orion has advanced from the conceptual stage to the pre-production phase. Also, the studio referred to the sequel as 'Cyberpunk 2' for the first time. While it's unclear if this is the final name or just a placeholder, it's a sign that development is progressing well on the sequel In the past, CD Projekt has used subtitles when it comes to naming sequels in The Witcher series, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so it's possible Cyberpunk 2 will have some kind of additional name bolted on when it is revealed. Don't expect it to be shown anytime soon though. During a Q&A segment, CD Projekt's co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, was asked when we can expect Cyberpunk 2 to come out, now it's entered the pre-production phase, and if it will match The Witcher 4's timeline, which entered the same stage in 2022 and is expected to launch in 2027. 'Our journey from the pre-production to the final release takes four to five years on average,' Nowakowski replied. 'Having said that, keep in mind that each project is unique and there are many variables which influence the final outcome, so I will not lead you into specific years. But this is pretty much how it looks like.' If CD Projekt sticks to this timeframe, Cyberpunk 2 will likely not be released until late 2029 or 2030, at the earliest. That's a whole decade after the original game came out on December 10, 2020, when it caught a lot of negative attention for its bug-ridden state. Development on Cyberpunk 2 might be a smoother process, however, considering CD Projekt recently opened a new studio in Boston, Massachusetts primarily for the sequel. The Witcher 4's development, meanwhile, is being done at its main offices in Warsaw, Poland. More Trending Elsewhere, the studio announced Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty has surpassed 10 million copies sold, an increase of two million from November last year. CD Projekt is hoping for an extra wave of sales with the launch of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Switch 2 next month. CD Projekt has several other projects in the works beyond The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, including a new IP codenamed Project Hadar and a new game set in the Witcher universe codenamed Project Sirius. However, there's no indication of when these could come out. The next new release from the company is likely to be the remake of The Witcher 1, although that's being made by a third party studio and has no confirmed release year. The Witcher 4 will be the next game from CD Projekt Red, which will feature Geralt of Rivia's adoptive daughter, Ciri, as the protagonist. CD Projekt's 'Cyberpunk 2' Sequel Enters Pre-Production, Won't Be Out Until 2030

CD Projekt has announced that its follow-up to 2020's Cyberpunk 2077 , simply known as Cyberpunk 2 , has entered the pre-production phase of development. The studio made the announcement as part of its latest financial announcement, which also highlighted the latest sales milestone for the original game's expansion, Phantom Liberty , which has sold 10 million copies to date. 'Given these developments, it fills me with even greater satisfaction to announce another important stage in our work on the next big game in this franchise,' said chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz, 'Several weeks ago, Cyberpunk 2 — previously referred to as Project Orion — wrapped up its conceptual phase and entered pre-production. Congratulations to the entire team!' While this reveal might be exciting, fans are in for a long wait, as the game is still far from being released. When responding to a question suggesting that the sequel will follow the original's development timelines, thus placing its release date somewhere between late 2030 and early 2031, Nowakowski did not disagree. 'I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average,' he explained. 'Having said that, keep in mind that each project is unique, and there are many variables that influence the final outcome. So I will not lead you into specific years, but yes, this is pretty much how it looks.' For now, it looks like Cyberpunk 2 is still a long way off, as all of CD Projekt's focus is still firmly set on The Witcher 4 , which is also not due out anytime soon, with the highly anticipated RPG only due out in 2027, leading to speculation that it would target next-gen consoles. Cyberpunk 2 Moves Into Pre-Production As CD Projekt Red Confirms Almost 100 Developers Are Already Working On It

We might finally be closer to Cyberpunk 2 coming out than the original game was when it was first announced back in 2012. CD Projekt Red recently confirmed that the sci-fi open-world RPG sequel has moved into pre-production with roughly 100 developers currently devoted to the Polish studio's second major franchise. CDPR outlined its current development allocation in its latest report to investors. Formerly known as Project Orion, Cyberpunk 2 is expected to take players back to the first game's bustling LA-inspired Night City as well as to a new hub location that's been described as akin to Chicago. The Witcher 4, meanwhile, currently has 422 developers working on it but isn't expected to ship before 2027. The company also noted that Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion has currently sold 10 million copies, and The Witcher 3 has sold 60 million copies, 10 million of which are from the last five years. Assuming the Ciri-led follow-up doesn't end up hitting until 2028 and Cyberpunk 2 takes five years of additional development after that, we wouldn't see it until 2033, about eight years from now. That might feel like forever, but remember: it was seven years between the first big cinematic teaser for Cyberpunk and its buggy release in 2020. Will things be smoother and faster this time around? Considering CDPR now has lots of experience with both its third-person fantasy and first-person shooter formulas under its belt, maybe! Both franchises are also moving to Unreal Engine 5 and CDPR is involved in other projects as well, however, including a Witcher spin-off codenamed Sirius and a new IP called Hadar. Plus blockbuster game development just keeps getting more complex, expensive, and time-consuming. What took five years to make on PS5 might take even longer on PS6. No wonder, then, that in the meantime CDPR is trying to get the existing Cyberpunk 2077 in front of more people with the Switch 2 port. Unfortunately, despite a next-gen version of The Witcher 3 that came out a few years ago, a Switch 2 edition of that game isn't currently in the works. . The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel finally makes it to preproduction

Once Cyberpunk 2077 worked out its oh-so-many kinks , it was a damn good game. And more is on the way. CD Projekt Red said on Wednesday that its sequel has moved into pre-production. It wasn't a secret that a sequel was in the works. In 2022, CDPR shared a roadmap describing "Project Orion." It would "further develop the potential embodied by [the Cyberpunk 2077 ] universe." That's as clear as you can get without using the word "sequel." Now, CDPR is shedding the codename as development forges ahead. "Several weeks ago, the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project's conceptual phase," the publisher wrote. "As a result, Cyberpunk 2 — previously known under the codename Project Orion — has progressed to pre-production." Of course, entering pre-production is still a long way from something you can play. Following the fiasco last time, expect CDPR to play it safe and take more time with the final stages. On a related note, CDPR said Phantom Liberty has sold 10 million copies. The massive expansion launched on PC and consoles in late 2023. It's part of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition , which includes the base game and all the DLC. That version arrived on PC and consoles in 2023. It will be heading to Switch 2 and macOS soon.
