In Singapore, 147,000 customer records exposed in Cycle & Carriage data breach

SINGAPORE, Aug 1 — About 147,000 customer records were compromised in a recent data breach at car distributor Cycle & Carriage in Singapore, the company confirmed today. Responding to media queries, a Cycle & Carriage spokesperson said the firm detected unauthorised access to its customer relationship management system on July 14, where a threat actor downloaded certain customer details, according to CNA in a report published today. 'About 147,000 data records are affected. Most of the downloaded records have missing or partial information,' the spokesperson said. The compromised data may include names and contact details such as email addresses and phone numbers. Around 2 per cent of the records also contained National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers and deposit amounts. No banking or credit card details were accessed. Cycle & Carriage, the authorised dealer in Singapore for car brands including Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Kia, Citroën and Peugeot, said it has taken steps to block further unauthorised access following the breach. A forensic investigation has since been launched, and the company has brought in cybersecurity experts to determine the cause of the intrusion. Cycle & Carriage has notified Singapore's Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC), lodged a police report, and begun informing affected customers in batches starting Wednesday. In an email to a customer seen by CNA, the company described the incident as a 'cybersecurity breach' and said it was still assessing the full extent of the damage. Apologising to those affected, the company said it had internal protocols and training in place to safeguard data but would continue to improve these measures in light of the breach. Customers were urged to stay alert for phishing scams and suspicious requests for personal information. The PDPC confirmed it is investigating the case, while the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore reminded organisations to strengthen cybersecurity defences to prevent data leaks and limit their impact.

In response to CNA's queries, a spokesperson from Cycle & Carriage said that it was alerted on Jul 14 to "unauthorised access" into its customer relationship management system by a threat actor who downloaded some customer information. "About 147,000 data records are affected. Most of the downloaded records have missing or partial information," added the spokesperson. The affected data records may contain names and contact information - such as email addresses and phone numbers - with about 2 per cent of them containing National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers and deposit amounts. No banking or credit card information was divulged, the spokesperson said. "Once we became aware of the incident, we have taken measures to prevent further unauthorised access to the system. "A thorough investigation was carried out and forensic experts were activated to look into the possible causes of this unauthorised access," the spokesperson added. Apologising to affected customers, Cycle & Carriage said that the company has internal processes, protocols, and training in place to support data governance and cyber hygiene, but will continue to "review and refine these as needed" in light of the incident. The firm has lodged a police report and notified the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC). It has also begun to inform affected customers in batches from Wednesday. In an email sent to a customer on Thursday, which CNA has seen, the firm referred to a "cybersecurity incident" and added that it was still investigating the full scope of the breach. Customers were advised to be cautious of phishing activities or suspicious requests for personal information.

SINGAPORE - The authorities are investigating a data breach in which hackers are believed to have accessed details of customers of motoring giant Cycle & Carriage Singapore (C&C). In response to queries, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) said it is aware of the data breach and investigations are ongoing. C&C, in a note sent to affected customers on July 31, said it is still investigating the full scope of the breach. It is unclear how many customers were affected. The note said: 'We were alerted on 14 July 2025 to the unauthorised access into our customer relationship management system, and the threat actor downloaded some customer information. 'Your information is within the affected data records.' Information that was compromised can include customer names and contact information such as e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses, but not banking or credit card information, it added. C&C also made a police report after it discovered the data breach. The note said: 'Once we became aware of the incident, we took measures to prevent further unauthorised access to the system. A thorough investigation was carried out to establish the facts and it is still ongoing.' It added that forensic investigators were activated to look into the possible causes of the hack, and it had informed the PDPC as well. C&C advised affected customers to keep an eye out for phishing activities or suspicious requests for personal information following the incident.
