23 Filipino and Indonesian illegals jailed

Kota Kinabalu: Twenty-three illegal immigrants were jailed four months each for entering the State illegally. They were Noraisyah, Mohamad Andi, Martasesa, John Yulius, Wilfredo Valenzuela, Nelly Rinding, Yosua Upa, Mimi Tonding, Edmun Muntasil, Mursid Ahmad, Abd Shah Amin, Faisal Nur, Norhida, Aliyad, Lena Ismail Wariji, Aputti Kummih, Rudy Abdul Rasa, Taib Hasim, Sarah Bahri, Nurisah Taha, Asid Jakang, Nurainnie Paruk and Kalma Minya, aged 23 and 50. Advertisement The illegal immigrants comprising Indonesians and Filipinos pleaded guilty separately before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, to entering the State without valid documents. All of them were arrested during operations carried out by the Immigration Department at different places in Keningau and Tenom between July 23 and 29 this year. During the operations, they failed to produce their valid documents to the Immigration personnel. They committed the offence under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 which provides for a jail term of up to five years, or a fine of up to RM10,000 and whipping, on conviction. In mitigation, the illegal immigrants begged for leniency and to be deported to their respective hometowns as soon as possible. The court ordered them to serve the jail sentence from the date of their arrests and referred to the Immigration Department for deportation after serving their jail term. Eight years, rotan for molesting girl, 11

Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old man who molested an 11-year-old girl while he was drunk, was sentenced to eight years' jail and ordered to get two strokes of the cane. Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain meted out the sentence to Wong Chee Shin who pleaded guilty to the charge against him. Advertisement Wong had committed physical sexual harassment by molesting the minor's right thigh at 7.35pm on July 13, this year, at a grocery shop in Taman Suria, Penampang. The offence, under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (SOACA) 2017, provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction. The court ordered Wong to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest. During mitigation, Wong who was not represented, asked for leniency saying that he needed to look after his five siblings. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazriel Fardiansyah Abdul Kadir urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence considering the public interest and seriousness of the offence. The court heard that an unknown man who was under the influence of alcohol had approached the victim and asked her what she watched on her handphone. The man, later identified as Wong, then sat beside the victim, put his hands on her right thigh and molested her. The victim who did not feel comfortable with Wong's action then stood up, ran towards her uncle and told the uncle about the incident. The victim's father then lodged a police report after being informed by his elder brother and following the report, Wong was arrested. Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga fixed the date for Andi, 44, who is the Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Assistant Minister, and Sindumin Assemblyman Dr Yusof, 69, bussinessman Datuk Tei Jeinn Cheing, 37, when their cases were brought for mention on Tuesday. Tei was present via Zoom. During the proceedings, the prosecution had served several documents but asked for further pre-trial case management as there are some additional documents to be prepared. Power theft: Man fined RM21,000

Kota Kinabalu: A 58-year-old man was fined a total of RM21,000 for two counts of using electricity that bypasses the meter terminals, causing the Sabah Electricity to undercharge and incur losses. Voo Hen Sang @ Tonny pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, to both charges against him, Monday. On the first count, Voo was fined RM1,000 or 14 days' jail for dishonestly using electricity through the installation of a black bypass cable connected to the terminal of meter number 99178340 on the red phase. On the second count, he was ordered to pay another RM20,000 fine or spend five months in prison for fraudulently using electricity through the installation of a blue bypass cable connected to the terminal of meter number 98992844 on the red and blue phases. The charges stated the offences committed by Voo had caused the Sabah Electricity to undercharge and incur losses. He committed the offences on Feb 24, this year, at 4.40pm and 8pm at Kg Kauluan in Tamparuli. In mitigation, Voo through his counsel Jeremy Ho, asked for a lenient fine, saying that it was his first offence. Jailed 5 years, one stroke for syabu

Kota Kinabalu: A 35-year-old man was sent to prison for five years and ordered to get a stroke of the cane for taking syabu for the third time. Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan meted out the sentence to Mohd Jamnu Mohd Judin who pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Friday. Mohd Jammu was found of taking the drug at 6pm on June 20 this year after his urine was tested positive for drug at the police station here and he has two conviction records for taking the drug. He committed the offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) which punishable under Section 39C(1) of DDA provides for a jail term of between five and seven years, and whipping, on conviction. The court ordered Mohd Jammu to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and to be placed under police supervision for three years after completing the jail sentence. Earlier, during mitigation, Mohd Jammu who was not represented, asked for a lenient sentence saying that he has family to look after. He also promised that once he release from prison, he would not repeat the offence.
