Girard Indians High School softball preview

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Girard looks to improve upon last year's 7-win team. Coach Jim Keagy says, 'The expectations are to build upon last year. Our goal is to get to double-digit wins and compete in every game. From the first game to the last game, we want to strive to improve both mentally and physically. We have to find a way to get 21 outs and put the bat on the ball. We have a very young team that will need to grow up fast as they'll be asked to fill in some important key spots.' Girard welcomes back five letter winners in senior Abby Iceman (P/2B/P), juniors Kyra Bell (SS/2B/OF) and Ava Serrano (OF) along with sophomores Brooklyn Broll (P/1B/OF) and Caylee Wilkes (C/OF), Iceman, Bell and Serrano have each lettered twice. Bell finished her sophomore year with 23 hits, 19 RBIs and 12 stolen bases while Serrano closed out her 10th grade year with 15 hits and 9 steals. Broll and Wilkes both gained recognition from their team – as the team's newcomers of the year. Broll put together a stat line of 14 hits and drove in 19 runs while throwing 67 innings; striking out 38 batters. Wilkes registered 17 hits and 17 RBIs. Look for the 9th grade class to begin to solidify itself as a strong group on the Indians' roster with Riley Collins (C/SS), Gabby Doran (2B/1B/P), Lauryn Greene (C/3B/OF), Chloe Plant (P/2B), Gianna Saxon (3B) and Quinn Wilster (OF) all providing contributions this spring. 'We graduated five seniors,' indicates Keagy. 'We look to build on the foundation that they installed. With only one senior this year, we'll work as each player will need to step up when called upon. We're [looking to] strive to represent our Indian pride with dignity and passion. This group of girls is extremely athletic and are willing to put in the work to get better every single day. Kyra and Ava have started since their freshmen year; they'll be asked to help lead this group along with Abby, our lone senior. Brooklyn will look to improve in the circle and help the team out at the plate. We have an eager group of freshmen that are excited to finally get a chance to play high school softball. It's a very talented group that has made an immediate impact in the preseason.' The Indians will get the season underway on Saturday, March 22 against Crestview. South Range High School Raiders softball preview

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – South Range looks to duplicate last season's success where the team won 30-games and finished as a state finalist. In the Regional Final, the Raiders got by Champion – 1-0 – in 8 innings on a Giada Pauline inside the park-home run. Six days later, in the State Semifinal, South Range's bats came to play as they overwhelmed South Webster – 11-4. 'Come off that appearance, we expect to get back into the regionals,' says coach Jeff DeRose. 'Our hitting will be a strength for us this year; we're not the most 'fleet-footed' team but we're aggressive on the base paths. Our pitching is deep and pretty darn good.' In the center, pitching will be Jayli Wilt (.375 BA, 11 2Bs, 30 RBIs). In the outfield, folks will see Solena DeJesus (.445 BA, 15 2Bs, 36 RBIs) and Giada Pauline (.387 BA, 38 RBIs). Anna Aey (.400 BA, 9 HRs, 15 2Bs, 44 RBIs) will be playing at the corner in the infield. With Keira Brogan (.508 BA, 19 2Bs, 6 3Bs, 3 HRs, 33 RBIs) not expected to play this spring with an injury; look for her younger sister Sophia to take over at shortstop.
