Ggm improves position, but still at 41st spot in Swachh rankings

In a significant jump, Gurugram climbed up to the 41st position in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings, up from 140th last year. At the state level, the city secured seventh place among 20 districts in Haryana. The annual urban cleanliness assessment, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission, awarded Gurugram 8,667 points out of 12,500. The city achieved a high score of 99% in waste processing, 90% cleanliness in residential areas, 85% in market areas, and 100% of water bodies (HT Archive) Gurugram's performance, while showing commendable strengths, also highlighted several key shortcomings. The city achieved a high score of 99% in waste processing, 90% cleanliness in residential areas, 85% in market areas, and 100% of water bodies. However, significant gaps remained in critical areas. Door-to-door waste collection stood at 59%, source segregation at dismal 10%, dumpsite remediation scored just 50%, and cleanliness of public toilets was limited to 55%, revealing inconsistencies in sanitation management and on-ground implementation. While officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) attributed the improved ranking to focused sanitation drives, citizen engagement and enhanced waste processing, several residents expressed surprise and concern over the contrast between reported data and visible ground conditions. According to the detailed assessment, Gurugram received a high percentage in parameters such as waste processing efficiency, cleanliness of residential areas, and maintenance of water bodies. However, the city underperformed in several crucial aspects such as source segregation of waste, door-to-door collection coverage and remediation of legacy dumpsites. Municipal commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, acknowledged the need for targeted improvements despite the overall progress. He said that the city's improved performance is the result of collaboration among officials, sanitation staff, and the community. 'While reaching the 41st spot is a positive step, we are aiming higher. Steps are already being taken to strengthen waste collection systems, enhance segregation at the source, and scale up awareness drives in collaboration with resident welfare associations. Tenders have been floated for four private agencies to manage door-to-door collection in select wards, and we are monitoring sanitation issues daily,' said Dahiya. However, many citizens have raised concerns about the real condition of sanitation across Gurugram. Chaitali Mandhotra, RWA member from Ardee City, expressed skepticism over the ranking. 'I was surprised by Gurugram's rank this year because garbage dumps all over the city are not a secret. What shocks me more is that Gurugram gathered maximum brownie points for dumpsite remediation. The city has gone terribly wrong in managing landfills, collecting, and segregating waste. Should we say that Swachh Bharat is not successful anywhere in India, which led to Gurugram climbing the ladder even with such a poor state on the ground?' said Mandhotra. The survey is considered the world's largest urban cleanliness assessment and plays a key role in incentivizing cities to improve sanitation and waste management practices. According to MCG officials, this year's performance was impacted due to poor performance of previous agencies, which disrupted the door-to-door waste collection services in many areas. The city has also earned a Water plus certification for its advanced sewage treatment and water reuse systems, a major milestone in sustainable urban planning. Vaishali Rana, a city-based environmentalist, raised concerns over the disparity between official data and on-ground realities. 'It's disheartening to see Gurugram celebrated for its ranking when the experience of residents tells a different story. The low source segregation rate, rampant garbage dumps, and poorly maintained public toilets paint a grim picture. A high score in waste processing means little if the waste is not being collected or segregated properly at the source. The survey mechanism needs to go beyond paperwork and look at the lived environment of residents. Cleanliness must reflect in streets, not just in reports,' said Rana. Officials said that the next steps will focus on strengthening public toilet maintenance, boosting source segregation compliance, and accelerating legacy waste treatment. As Gurugram eyes a place among the top 20 cities in the next assessment cycle, civic officials have urged residents to actively participate in cleanliness efforts and hold municipal bodies accountable.

Wriddhiman Saha All Set To Enter Coaching Arena, Likely To Become Head Coach Of...

Last Updated: Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy. Six months into retirement from competitive cricket, one of India's finest wicketkeepers, Wriddhiman Saha, is all set to enter the coaching arena, with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) showing interest in hiring him as the head coach of the U-23 state team. Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy. It is understood that former Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla will continue as the head coach of the senior team, while former off-spinner Saurashis Lahiri will coach the U-19 team. 'The CAB brass will be zeroing in on all the candidates for various teams by next week. Obviously, Wriddhi has been sounded out, and a final decision will be taken next week. Apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he is the biggest name from Bengal with 40 Tests," a senior CAB source told PTI on the condition of anonymity. 'His experience of playing top-level cricket for so long will only help the Gen-Next of Bengal cricket. Wriddhi already runs a chain of coaching centres, and he has been a very hands-on coach for juniors. He is passionate about coaching. Hopefully, he will be ready," the source said. While there is not much precedence in Bengal cricket about players being drafted into the coaching system immediately after retirement, Saha's case is slightly different considering his stature in state cricket. The Bengal U-23 side till last season was being coached by former India opener Pranab Roy, son of the legendary late Pankaj Roy. Many people in the Bengal circuit believe that Saha is cut out to become a good coach. His experience with the U-23 squad could prove to be handy if he joins any IPL team in the future or as a specialist coach at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Dahiya vs Sarandeep for Delhi men's Ranji coach job Delhi Ranji team's head coach job is expected to be a two-way battle between former India players Sarandeep Singh and Vijay Dahiya, both of whom have applied for the post. The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) is conducting interviews for support staff and selectors for various age groups (U-16, U-19, U-23) along with senior teams. Sarandeep is the current Delhi head coach, while Dahiya has handled the state team on a couple of occasions in the past. The former India stumper is an assistant coach with Lucknow Super Giants and has also coached the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team. 'There are three candidates in the running. Sarandeep, who is our current head coach, and Dahiya, who has extensive coaching experience, have both appeared for interviews. The third strong candidate is former Delhi keeper Rajiv Vinayak," a senior DDCA official privy to developments said. 'The Corner Defender Is The Pillar Of The Team:' Yogesh Dahiya On His Record-Breaking Bulls Move

Yogesh Dahiya, 23, became the most expensive Indian defender in PKL history, signed by Bengaluru Bulls for INR 1.125 crores. The television screen flickered with anticipation as three Pro Kabaddi League franchises locked horns in an intense bidding war. Sitting in his modest home, Yogesh Dahiya watched his fate unfold in real-time, his heart racing with each escalating bid. 'I was watching the player auction live on TV. I could see Bengaluru Bulls bidding, then Patna Pirates, then Bengal Warriorz. I was watching all this unfold," recalls the 23-year-old defender. He emerged as the most expensive Indian defender bought during a PKL Player Auction, after he was signed by Bengaluru Bulls for a staggering INR 1.125 crores. The auction room drama translated into a whirlwind of emotions for the young athlete. 'There was a little nervousness – what will happen? Who will take me? Which franchise will I join? But overall, it was very interesting and fun," he reflected. When the hammer finally fell in Bulls' favor, the celebration wasn't just confined to the franchise's war room. Back in his village, his family erupted in joy after it was confirmed that he is now the most expensive Indian defender in the history of the PKL Player Auction. 'My family was very happy. Mom and dad were so happy that their child had become so valuable. They felt proud that I had achieved this recognition," Dahiya shared. This wasn't always the story. The path from village fields to professional stardom began almost by accident in 2018. 'The seniors used to play in the village. Looking at them, I developed an interest in playing kabaddi. It helped me avoid school work, and I also enjoyed it," he admitted with characteristic honesty. Family support wasn't immediate. 'In the beginning, there wasn't much support. But after I started performing better, the family became interested. They started supporting me. On days when I didn't feel like going to practice, they would say 'get up, go to practice. What will you do at home?'" The transformation from skepticism to unwavering support mirrors Dahiya's own evolution as a player. The catalyst for his development came from an unexpected source – his uncle's son, who recognized raw talent where others saw just another village boy. 'He introduced me to the game. He made me start playing. He guided me constantly, gave me advice regularly, and worked very hard with me." This mentorship laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable journey. Dahiya's rise through the ranks hasn't been built on flashy moves or attention-grabbing antics. Instead, he's earned his reputation as a 'silent killer" – a defender who strikes with precision rather than spectacle. His philosophy is refreshingly simple yet profound: 'You have to play with patience. Don't be too aggressive, and don't make too many mistakes. Make your tackles at the right time. Play for your team. When there's a need to tackle, I tackle for my team. Don't play for yourself." The record-breaking contract brings with it enormous expectations, but Dahiya appears unfazed by the pressure. 'I feel very good being part of Bengaluru Bulls. I will play for them and represent them this season," he states with the quiet confidence that has become his trademark. His ambitions for the upcoming season are crystal clear, as he concluded by saying, 'I want to do my best for my team. And this year, I hope we can lift the cup – that's what I'm aiming for." It's a goal that reflects both personal ambition and collective responsibility – hallmarks of a player who understands that individual success means nothing without team triumph.
