‘Largest in the western hemisphere': BAE Systems commissions new ship lift near JAXPORT
Naval Station Mayport is celebrating the opening of a new $250 million facility that will support and maintain U.S. Navy ships. Industry leaders cut the ribbon on the state-of-the-art shipyard addition in a ceremony Monday. BAE Systems said the ship lift is one of the ten largest ship lifts in the world, and the largest on the western hemisphere. 'It's not anything like dry docks. It's not like anything that's been done before,' Tim Spratto said. Leaders say the new addition will support work critical to America's national defense and provide massive upgrades to the area's shipyard service. The lift will also be able to provide shipyard services to commercial ships entering the port of Jacksonville. All this comes as the Trump administration calls for the restoration of the American maritime industry with an April executive order. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Acting Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Jim Kilby, said it's an order his team is taking seriously. 'I'm here to tell you that shipbuilding is the Secretary of the Navy's number one priority,' he said. Right now, the workforce has more than 650 employees but expects to add about 300 more. Wife of fallen Jacksonville firefighter working to install memorial sign at his fire station
Ian Church had only lived 41 years by the time he died. His wife, Brittany, believes he spent every second of it in service to others. 'If I had to give one adjective to Ian Church, it would be loyalty,' said Brittany Church, Ian Church's wife, 'He would have ran through a fire to protect anyone, and he just loved the city and wanted to make sure that it was safe.' Running through fires wasn't just part of Church's character, but his calling. He spent three and a half years as an engineer with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department, after serving both with Clay County Fire Rescue and the U.S. Marine Corps. Action News Jax told you last August when JFRD shared that Church had died after a long-fought battle with cancer. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< During her conversation only with Action News Jax, Brittany Church shared that she still thinks of one of his stories of courage: saving a dog from a burning home in December 2023. 'He always just wanted to make the world a better place and let other people know that they were protected and well taken care of,' Church said. Church has now been without her husband for nine months, working as a single mother to her and Ian's three young kids. Recently, Ian's former fire captain at JFRD Station 60 in Jacksonville Beach inspired her to ask the city for a memorial street sign to be placed outside of the station in his name. Church says it's both a way to honor his legacy and poke fun at his challenge with directions. 'His captain said that we should do a street sign by our house so he'd always find his way home back to us,' said Church. But Church feels her husband has never lost his way back in the months he's been gone. She told Action News Jax she had asked her husband, soon before he died, to return to their family as a crow. She says she sees crows flying by her car, at the playground with their kids, and in other places whenever she's having a rough day or feeling a strong wave of grief. She doesn't just miss celebrating his service fighting flames, but the fire for his family, she can still feel burning. 'He said his favorite time of the day was when he'd get off shift and come home at 7:30 in the morning and all the kids would come running out in their diapers to give him a hug,' said Church, 'that's what I miss, is my kids having their dad.' The Jacksonville Beach City Council is meeting Monday to vote on approval for the street sign to honor Church. If it's passed, it will go up outside the station by South Beach Park. St. Johns County releases stricter version of proposed e-bike safety law
Action News Jax now has a copy of an updated version of a proposed law to limit the speeds of e-bikes riding through the county, which includes stricter safety requirements. Action News Jax told you at the start of the month when we got an initial draft of the newly proposed law to limit e-bike speeds, which had said they could only be ridden as fast as 10 miles per hour on the beaches. The newly released version says e-bikes can only go up to 10 mph on county roads and county sidewalks. The new version of the proposed law would also ban people younger than 14 from riding e-bikes, and require those under 18 to wear helmets. If bike lanes aren't available on the road, e-bikes would only be able to ride on the far right side of the street if there is a speed limit of 30 mph or less. Patrick Zummo is a parent of a 6-year-old daughter and has spent his last two years living in Nocatee with his family. He's recently started to feel on edge about e-bikes and wants to see stricter safety requirements. 'There's stop signs that the kids don't stop on, on their bikes where the golf carts stop and the cars stop, certainly, but the e-bikes don't,' Zummo said. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] St. Johns County officials tell Action News Jax the new law to require more e-bike riders to wear helmets and limit their speeds has been in the works since February. The updated proposal has been released a few weeks after Action News Jax told you two middle school students were hurt in e-bike crashes outside of the Julington Creek neighborhood, only days apart. On the day this story was published, Action News Jax saw two separate e-bike crashes, one in Ponte Vedra and another in Fruit Cove. County attorney Rich Komando says these kinds of cases are why the county is making the effort now to pass stricter safety measures. 'The concern was that for somebody traveling at a high rate of speed, especially on a sidewalk, it created a dangerous situation,' said Komando. Right now, there are no punishments listed in the proposed county law for violations made against it. Komando tells Action News Jax county commissioners will be the ones to decide how the law will actually be enforced, should it pass. 'It'll be interesting to see what regulation the commission feels needs to be put in place to protect the health, safety and well-being of the people within the county,' Komando said. The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners will be going over the proposed law during its meeting next Tuesday at 9:00 AM. That's when they are expected to go over any changes they may make, but the proposed law is not yet scheduled for a vote. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter]
