Mass Resignations Rock Congress Minority Cell, Meeting Turns Chaotic
Mangaluru: A tumultuous meeting of the Congress party's minority cell in Mangaluru on Thursday afternoon descended into disorder. Leaders and workers began mass resignations to protest the state government's response to recent violent murders in Dakshina Kannada. Led by Dakshina Kannada Minority Cell president Sahul Hameed, the Congress meeting saw many workers present. Tensions rose when Hameed mentioned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's request to delay his resignation for a week, prompting suspicions he might backtrack. Attendees, outraged, chanted for immediate resignations, causing chaos. Despite attempts by minority cell leaders to restore calm, the workers remained resolute, pressing for a collective resignation to highlight their dissatisfaction. The unrest reflects growing frustration over the state government's perceived inaction amid communal tensions and alleged communal murders in the district, despite repeated appeals from community leaders. Hameed, addressing the crowd, reaffirmed his stance, stating, 'We stand firm on our decision to resign,' and announced his resignation as president of the Congress district minority cell. Following his lead, leaders Abdul Rauf and M S Mohammed also submitted their resignations, amplifying the call for a broader resignation movement within the party's minority wing. According to sources, frustration over the Karnataka government's failure to address communal violence in Dakshina Kannada led to a chaotic Congress minority cell meeting on Thursday afternoon. Former mayor Ashraf resigned as vice president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress and from the party on May 28. Ashraf criticised the Congress-led state government for not curbing alleged Sangh Parivar-led harassment, including hate speeches, wrongful arrests, and the murder of Abdul Rehman. His resignation sparked a wave of others, reflecting deep discontent with the Congress leadership's inaction despite repeated community appeals. The May 29 meeting was called to formalise protests against the state's handling of communal tensions, particularly Abdul Rehman's killing, which district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao attributed to personal enmity, a claim Ashraf dismissed, alleging misinformation by officials. The decision to begin resignations sent a clear message to the state government and Congress high command, setting a charged atmosphere for the meeting, where demands for accountability and swift action escalated into disorder.

Cong minority functionaries plan mass resignations
Mangaluru: Upset over back-to-back murders in Mangaluru and the deteriorating law and order situation, Shahul Hameed KK, president of the minority wing of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress, said that several party office bearers from the Muslim minority community are expected to tender mass resignations on Thursday. He said that a meeting will be convened at 2.30 pm at Shaadi Mahal in Mangaluru, where 300–400 Congress members, ranging from booth-level functionaries to state-level leaders, are likely to resign from their posts. "This is a voluntary decision. Communal, religion-based murders are happening repeatedly in the district. The home department failed to control the situation. How many more innocents must die? Provocative speeches are being made openly, and the police are unable to contain the fallout," he said. Hameed further warned that the fear among the public is intense, and the district virtually shuts down by 7 pm. "Students will stop coming to Mangaluru if this continues. A handful of rowdies are creating havoc, and despite meetings by the home minister and district minister, murders continue unabated," he added. Ashraf resigns In a related development, former mayor K Ashraf submitted his resignation from the post of vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee. In his statement, Ashraf said, "I held various positions in the Mangaluru City Corporation and also served as mayor. With the Congress currently in power, I am deeply hurt by the persistent atrocities against minorities in Dakshina Kannada and elsewhere in Karnataka. " He pointed to the Sangh Parivar's role in inciting communal violence, hate speeches by fringe elements, and the brutal murder of Abdul Rahiman.

Ministers condemn mob lynching incident in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: Home minister G Parameshwara and minister for health and family welfare and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the alleged mob lynching incident reported near Bhatra Kallurti Temple in Kudupu in the city. Home minister Parameshwara told reporters that police would take the issue very seriously. "An incident of mob lynching was reported, and his name has not yet been identified. His identity, whether he was from the same district or outside, has not yet been ascertained at this point. According to the initial report, this individual was shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' and things like that when a local cricket match was going on. Hearing this, a few people got together and beat him. He did not die on the spot, but later succumbed to injuries. I need to get the actual report," Parameshwara said. These kinds of incidents should not happen anywhere, not only in Karnataka but also in any other place. Karnataka is such a peaceful state, and we do not want to allow these kinds of incidents. "Even if he shouted 'Pakistan Zindabad', they could have handed him over to police instead of taking the law into their hands," the home minister said and appealed to the public to maintain peace and harmony. District minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, in his X handle, wrote: "The incident near Kudupu on the outskirts of Mangaluru, where a young man was brutally murdered by being hit with a stone, is highly condemnable. While playing a game of cricket, an argument broke out between a group of players and a youth from another community, which led to an assault on the youth. Such incidents sow the seeds of communal hate. I have instructed police officials to take strict action against the culprits involved in the incident." Meanwhile, Shahul Hameed KK, president of Minority Wing, Dakshina Kannada District Congress, expressed dissatisfaction with the statements made by the home minister and the district minister and urged them to visit the district immediately to assess the situation. Blaming failure on the part of police department's intelligence division, he said that if locals are questioned about the mob lynching of the migrant worker, clear information could be obtained.
