Ministers condemn mob lynching incident in Mangaluru

Time of India29-04-2025
Mangaluru: Home minister G Parameshwara and minister for health and family welfare and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the alleged mob lynching incident reported near Bhatra Kallurti Temple in Kudupu in the city. Home minister Parameshwara told reporters that police would take the issue very seriously.
"An incident of mob lynching was reported, and his name has not yet been identified. His identity, whether he was from the same district or outside, has not yet been ascertained at this point. According to the initial report, this individual was shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' and things like that when a local cricket match was going on. Hearing this, a few people got together and beat him. He did not die on the spot, but later succumbed to injuries. I need to get the actual report," Parameshwara said.
These kinds of incidents should not happen anywhere, not only in Karnataka but also in any other place. Karnataka is such a peaceful state, and we do not want to allow these kinds of incidents. "Even if he shouted 'Pakistan Zindabad', they could have handed him over to police instead of taking the law into their hands," the home minister said and appealed to the public to maintain peace and harmony.
District minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, in his X handle, wrote: "The incident near Kudupu on the outskirts of Mangaluru, where a young man was brutally murdered by being hit with a stone, is highly condemnable. While playing a game of cricket, an argument broke out between a group of players and a youth from another community, which led to an assault on the youth. Such incidents sow the seeds of communal hate. I have instructed police officials to take strict action against the culprits involved in the incident."
Meanwhile, Shahul Hameed KK, president of Minority Wing, Dakshina Kannada District Congress, expressed dissatisfaction with the statements made by the home minister and the district minister and urged them to visit the district immediately to assess the situation. Blaming failure on the part of police department's intelligence division, he said that if locals are questioned about the mob lynching of the migrant worker, clear information could be obtained.

Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara: Karnataka will regulate online games based on report

BENGALURU: Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara on Tuesday told the Assembly that the State Government is keen to regulate online gaming platforms. The government would take action after the committee led by senior IPS officer Pranab Mohanty submits its report in September, said Dr Parameshwara. The online gaming market in India is more than $590 million, the House was told by IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge. Dr Parameshwara said that youth are getting addicted to online games and betting, leading to social concerns. He said in the last three years 347 cases have been booked related to online gaming. This includes 84 in 2023, 104 and 159 cases. In 2021, the previous BJP government had amended the Karnataka Police Act to prohibit online games. This was challenged by the All-India Gaming Federation and the Act was struck down by the High Court in 2022. The state government has challenged this before the Supreme Court.

BJP demands statement by HM to end rumours

Bengaluru: The BJP on Tuesday raised the issue of the Dharmasthala murders in the Assembly and urged Home Minister G. Parameshwara to make a statement on the case to put an end to rumours circulating on social media and in society. BJP MLA and state General Secretary V. Sunil Kumar, raising the matter during Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly, said that for the last 12 to 13 days, developments have been taking place targeting the religious centre. 'We welcome the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and have no objection to bringing out the truth. However, under the pretext of investigation, attempts are being made to degrade and defame a Hindu religious centre,' he stated. 'If social media reports and statements are taken into consideration, it is clear they are targeting Dharmasthala. It is an attack on our faith and devotion. We have information that even after 16 sites have been excavated, as per the statements of the unidentified complainant, nothing has been found,' he said. 'I urge the state government to put an end to these rumours. In which direction is the SIT investigation heading? Before the matter takes another turn, information should be shared. If the complainant makes claims, authorities cannot go on digging hundreds of sites. Action should be taken against those indulging in propaganda,' he urged.'The government should maintain the sanctity of the Dharmasthala pilgrimage centre. The Home Minister should make a statement on the progress of the investigation. How many more sites are you going to excavate?' Sunil Kumar asked. Responding, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said that following a complaint and a demand from the local community on July 19, the SIT was formed, and the investigation is in progress. The probe should be completed within the given time frame. 'It is not possible to excavate hundreds of sites. After the investigation reaches a certain stage, the SIT will submit a report, and I will make a statement then,' he said. Former Minister and BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar pointed out that Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had said that the Mangaluru police were competent to conduct the probe and that the SIT was formed due to pressure from Leftists. Clarifying, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said, 'We are siding with no one.

Home minister calls addiction to online gaming worse than drugs, govt plans fresh curbs

Bengaluru: The govt will decide on regulating the online gaming sector based on recommendations of a committee headed by IPS officer Pranab Mohanty, home minister G Parameshwara told the assembly Tuesday. The committee, set up in April, is expected to submit its report in Sept. Responding to a question from BJP's S Suresh Kumar during question hour, Parameshwara said he had met representatives of online gaming companies and sought their cooperation in framing regulations to safeguard public. "They have agreed," he said, while suggesting online games were more dangerous than drugs. Parameshwara acknowledged concerns about addiction, especially among youth. He cited police data showing 347 cases of online betting registered in the state since 2023 — 84 cases in 2023, 104 in 2024, and 159 up to July 31 this year. Ballari district reported the highest number, at 73 cases. How many people have the capacity to resist the temptation? The likes of (cricketer) Harbhajan Singh are endorsing such games." The legal tussle over online gaming began in 2021, when the previous BJP govt amended the Karnataka Police Act to prohibit online games. The high court struck down the amendments in 2022, after which the state challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court. Parameshwara said the "comprehensive" changes were contested by the All India Gaming Federation, adding: "We need to define games of skill and chance, whose need wasn't anticipated when the law was amended. " CN Ashwath Narayan of BJP urged the govt to ban betting even in games of skill. In response, IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge said: "Even fantasy sports were put under the skill game category by the court. The Union and state govt must work together on a law. There's a 28% GST on online gaming. So, games are being hosted on foreign servers. This makes it difficult for us to take action if there's fraud." Priyank said India has 519 million gamers, including 140 million paid gamers, and projected the online gaming business to grow from $4.5 billion to $9 billion within three years.
