Ministers condemn mob lynching incident in Mangaluru

Time of India29-04-2025

Mangaluru: Home minister G Parameshwara and minister for health and family welfare and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the alleged mob lynching incident reported near Bhatra Kallurti Temple in Kudupu in the city. Home minister Parameshwara told reporters that police would take the issue very seriously.
"An incident of mob lynching was reported, and his name has not yet been identified. His identity, whether he was from the same district or outside, has not yet been ascertained at this point. According to the initial report, this individual was shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' and things like that when a local cricket match was going on. Hearing this, a few people got together and beat him. He did not die on the spot, but later succumbed to injuries. I need to get the actual report," Parameshwara said.
These kinds of incidents should not happen anywhere, not only in Karnataka but also in any other place. Karnataka is such a peaceful state, and we do not want to allow these kinds of incidents. "Even if he shouted 'Pakistan Zindabad', they could have handed him over to police instead of taking the law into their hands," the home minister said and appealed to the public to maintain peace and harmony.
District minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, in his X handle, wrote: "The incident near Kudupu on the outskirts of Mangaluru, where a young man was brutally murdered by being hit with a stone, is highly condemnable. While playing a game of cricket, an argument broke out between a group of players and a youth from another community, which led to an assault on the youth. Such incidents sow the seeds of communal hate. I have instructed police officials to take strict action against the culprits involved in the incident."
Meanwhile, Shahul Hameed KK, president of Minority Wing, Dakshina Kannada District Congress, expressed dissatisfaction with the statements made by the home minister and the district minister and urged them to visit the district immediately to assess the situation. Blaming failure on the part of police department's intelligence division, he said that if locals are questioned about the mob lynching of the migrant worker, clear information could be obtained.

AG will file fact-based reply in HC on stampede case: K'taka Home Minister

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday said the Advocate General (AG) will file a detailed response addressing the questions raised by the High Court in connection with the June 4 stampede here that killed 11 people. The Minister's statement came after the High Court posted to June 12 the next hearing into a petition initiated by it in connection with the tragedy. The court ordered Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty to file a reply in a sealed cover. "Answers have to be given to the questions asked by the court, the Advocate General will prepare and give. He will say what has to be said on behalf of the government. All those things have been discussed. The Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary and Advocate General have discussed. Factuals will be told to the court," Parameshwara told reporters here. Asked whether the investigation report will be submitted, he said, "it has to come to the government first. After the government gets it it can be informed to the court. Until that nothing can be said." Last week, the High Court had directed the state government to submit detailed responses to nine critical questions. A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameswar Rao and Justice C M Joshi posed certain queries-- Who authorised the RCB victory celebration event? When and how was the decision made? Whether the organisers had obtained the necessary permissions? among others-- on last Thursday while hearing a suo motu writ petition initiated by the court in the wake of the tragedy. The stampede occurred on June 4 evening in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium here, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident. Noting that the Congress high command has summoned the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, the Home Minister said the agenda of the meeting is not known. Asked whether a cabinet reshuffle was on cards, he said, "How do I get to know? I don't want to speculate. I don't know. If I'm called I will go. They have not called anyone else other than the CM and Shivakumar who is also the state Congress President." Replying to a question on Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty murder case being handed over to NIA probe, Parameshwara said, the Union Home Ministry has certain powers and under that it ordered the transfer of the case, making it an inevitability for the state. Asked on what grounds the case was handed over to NIA, he said, "they (union Home Ministry) have not given any explanation, they have quoted certain sections." To a question whether pressure from the state BJP has influenced the decision, the Minister said, "I don't know about it, nothing of that sort has been mentioned." Responding to a question about a murder case being handed over to the NIA, he said, "I don't know what the reasoning is, it is not mentioned in the letter. Only sections have been quoted and they have said the case should be handed over to the have very little choice.

Karnataka Home Minister requests construction of 'Welcome' arch on Tumkur highway

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 9 (ANI): Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday said that he has requested Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to give permission for the construction of a 'Welcome' arch on the National Highway in Tumkur. Speaking to reporters at Sadashivanagar, Tumkur District in-charge Minister said that Rs 5 crore has been provided from the Smart City project to build the Welcome arch on the National Highway in Tumkur. 'Union Minister V Somanna is the MP of our district. I have requested Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari through V Somanna and asked him to give permission. If permission is given, we will build a welcome arch at the beginning of Tumkur,' Parameshwara said. Parameshwara further added that many central projects need to be implemented in the district. 'Many projects related to drinking water come under the purview of the central government. Our taluk is included in this, and I have discussed it with them, he said. He further added, 'Since Tumkur city is next to the national highway, no one will know while traveling. If a welcome arch is built, it will be known.' According to Parameshwara, Union Minister Somanna will 'speak after seeing what the state government's decisions will be regarding the metro project' for Tumkur. Parameshwara stressed on Tumkur's growth and said that the district should be expanded. 'We have made an industrial hub on 20 thousand acres. Many people are asking that Tumkur should be expanded. A study is underway on this. Tumkur is 70 km from Bangalore. It will be beneficial in terms of development if it is included in the Greater Bengaluru area. We will also submit a proposal,' he said. While speaking on the Suhas Shetty murder case, Parameshwara said, 'Officials have told me that a letter has been received from the Union Home Department regarding the Suhas Shetty murder case. We will discuss this with the officials and take a decision. People from that area were talking about handing over the case to the NIA for investigation. Someone may have requested it. MPs and MLAs may have said so.' Shetty, a prominent right-wing youth leader associated with the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka's coastal belt, was brutally murdered last month in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district. The activist, in his early 30s, was attacked by unidentified assailants while returning home late at night. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident triggered widespread protests in the region, with local Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) units alleging a targeted killing. While speaking on the tragic stampede that occured during the IPL victory celebration event of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Bengaluru, Parameshwara called the June 4 incident 'unfortunate' and said that an investigation is underway and the report will soon be submitted. 'I will not speak about the stampede incident. We have entrusted this case to the one-man commission of retired judge Michael D Cunha. He will investigate and submit a report. If we give a statement, it will have a different impact. If we are asked during the investigation, we will tell. If we give a statement now, the direction of the investigation will go in a different direction,' he remarked. Earlier on Thursday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that a one-member commission has been formed to probe the incident. CM Siddaramaiah also announced that the state government has decided to suspend top police department officials, including the Commissioner of Bengaluru City Police. Speaking to the media, the Karnataka CM stated, 'Under the chairmanship of Justice Michael D'Cunha, a retired judge of the High Court, we have appointed a one-man commission to investigate the incident.' He emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring accountability. (ANI)

Proposal to include Tumakuru under Greater Bengaluru Authority soon: Karnataka Home Minister

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said Monday that a proposal will be submitted soon to the government to include Tumakuru under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). While speaking to reporters, Parameshwara pointed out that Tumakuru, which is around 70 km from Bengaluru, was growing rapidly. 'There is an industrial hub (at Tumakuru) in an area of 20,000 acre. Many are demanding that Tumakuru be expanded like Bengaluru. A study is being conducted on the issue,' he said. 'In the manner in which Ramanagar is renamed Bengaluru South, if Tumakuru is included in Greater Bengaluru, it will benefit us in terms of development. We will submit a proposal regarding the same,' Parameshwara, who is also in-charge minister for the Tumakuru district, said. The proposal came amidst demands to extend the Bengaluru Metro services to Tumakuru to boost connectivity between the two cities. The minister said the Karnataka government will take a call on extending Metro services to Tumakuru. 'Union Minister V Somanna has said that Tumakuru requires metro connectivity. Let there be both Metro and suburban rail connectivity,' he said. The Greater Bengaluru Authority was notified by the Karnataka Government last month after the GBA Act was passed in the Budget Session of the Assembly. The Act provided for the expansion of Bengaluru by including panchayats from areas neighbouring the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Multiple city corporations under GBA are also possible under the provisions of the Bill. Responding to a question on reports that he had asked for a change in portfolio, Parameshwara lashed out at media outlets for defaming him by publishing unverified reports. 'There were reports that I had asked for a change of portfolio with the chief minister (following the stampede at M Chinnaswamy stadium). Who told this to you (the media)? Please verify facts before publishing any news,' he said.
