Report: Celtics swap Georges Niang to Jazz; sign Chris Boucher

(Photo credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images) The Boston Celtics traded forward Georges Niang and two second-round draft picks to the Utah Jazz to acquire rookie forward RJ Luis Jr., ESPN reported Tuesday. In addition to helping Boston with luxury tax issues, the trade clears a roster spot for Boston because Luis is on a two-way contract. The Celtics are using that spot to sign forward Chris Boucher to a one-year, $3.3 million contract, Boucher's agent told ESPN. Niang, 32, was sent from the Atlanta Hawks to Boston in a three-team trade last month, but the Massachusetts native will not play a game for the Celtics. Niang averaged a career-best 9.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last season across 79 games split between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Hawks. He has posted 7.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 39.9 percent from 3-point range across 544 career games (32 starts) for five teams. Niang spent four seasons for the Jazz (2017-21) as a reserve forward. In Luis, the Celtics acquired a 22-year-old swingman who went undrafted in June and missed Summer League with a knee injury. Luis played one season at UMass and transferred to St. John's, where he was voted the Big East Player of the Year and an Associated Press second-team All-American. Boucher, 32, appeared in 50 games off the bench for the Toronto Raptors last season and put up 10 points and 4.5 rebounds in just 17.2 minutes per game. He has averaged 8.9 points and 5.1 rebounds across 407 career games, 406 with Toronto and one with Golden State.

Skidding Yankees activate Aaron Judge, Mark Leiter Jr.

(Photo credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images) The New York Yankees reinstated captain Aaron Judge and right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. among a flurry of moves on Tuesday. Judge was on the 10-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow, while Leiter was on the 15-day IL with a stress fracture in his left leg. Judge, who has not played since July 25, is expected to be the designated hitter Tuesday when the Yankees resume their series with the Texas Rangers in Arlington. Manager Aaron Boone said the team wants more time to evaluate the two-time MVP's arm before putting him back in right field. New York made more roster changes after dropping its fourth straight game with an 8-5 loss in 10 innings to the Rangers on Monday night. The Yankees have slipped 5 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East entering Tuesday. The Yankees also recalled Yerry de los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, designated fellow right-hander JT Brubaker for assignment and placed outfielder Austin Slater (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day IL. The Yankees demoted right-handed reliever Jake Bird to Triple-A after Monday's game. Bird, 29, took the loss after giving up a three-run homer to Josh Jung. Bird is now 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA in three appearances since arriving in a trade deadline deal with Colorado on July 31. Judge, 33, leads the majors in batting (.342), on-base percentage (.449) and slugging (.711) and has 37 homers and 85 RBIs in 103 games this season. Leiter, 34, is 4-6 with a 4.46 ERA and two saves in 41 relief appearances for New York this season. De Los Santos, 27, has no decisions and a 1.78 ERA in 17 appearances out of the Yankees' bullpen this season. Brubaker, 31, has no decisions and a 3.38 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Yankees this season. Slater, 32, is 0-for-7 with one RBI in three games for New York since arriving in a July 30 trade with the Chicago White Sox.

Aaron Judge has flexor strain, will spend time on IL

(Photo credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images) Yankees superstar right fielder Aaron Judge has a flexor strain and will spend time on the injured list, though he sustained no damage to his UCL, New York manager Aaron Boone said after Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Judge underwent imaging on his right elbow Saturday morning and was not in the lineup for the afternoon game against the visiting Phillies. 'He had a throw in Toronto where it zinged him, it hurt,' manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday, referencing Tuesday's 5-4 victory in Toronto when the Yankees captain winced in apparent pain after making a routine throw. 'Then, you know, felt good to go on the off day, and then last night, though, just was struggling to throw a little bit. So want to get this checked out.' Boone said it was 'tough to say' whether the strain occurred during that throw in Toronto. He said the injury appears to be affecting Judge's throwing more than his hitting. 'It was more about throwing last night, like he couldn't really get the ball in very well,' Boone said. 'So felt like want to have him down and get the imaging and get our hands around just what exactly we're dealing with.' Judge, 33, belted his 37th home run of the season and 352nd of his career on Wednesday to pass Alex Rodriguez for sixth place in Yankees history. Yogi Berra is fifth with 358. The two-time American League MVP currently paces the majors in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.449) and slugging percentage (.756). He leads the AL in runs (90) and RBIs (85).
