Stream These 10 TV Shows and Movies Before They Leave Netflix in August

Several notable television shows are departing Netflix in the United States this month, including sitcoms, action drama and a meta-textual examination of the medium itself. Also leaving the service in August: a Cannes-winning drama, a zany buddy comedy and an inspired slice of slasher horror. (Dates reflect the first day titles are unavailable and are subject to change.) 'My Wife and Kids': Seasons 1-5 (Aug. 5) Stream it here. When Damon Wayans burst on the comedy scene in the early 1990s, he was such a live wire — profane, provocative, uproarious — that it would've seemed nutty to compare him to Bill Cosby. But in 2001, approaching middle age, he took a page from the Cosby playbook, creating a sitcom showcase for himself as the patriarch of an upper-class Black family. Formulaic though it may be, 'My Wife and Kids' is consistently funny, with Wayans in fine form as the beleaguered dad; the 'Martin' alum Tisha Campbell-Martin as his career-minded wife; and, for three seasons, Damon Wayans Jr. displaying his skill for the family business. (Bonus: Unlike with 'The Cosby Show,' you can watch it now without feeling nauseated.) 'Ballers': Seasons 1-5 (Aug. 15) Stream it here. This HBO dramedy is a smart, funny, pointed and frequently accurate portrait of the business of professional sports. Dwayne Johnson (then still billed with his wrestling moniker 'The Rock' between names) stars as Spencer, a former football player who has become a finance manager and who has made it his mission to show his fellow athletes the path to fiscal security. Johnson makes expert use of his considerable charisma while still providing the supporting cast (including Rob Corddry, Omar Miller and John David Washington) with plenty of opportunities to shine. 'Baby Mama' (Aug. 16) Stream it here. After their success on 'Saturday Night Live' (especially as the first two-woman desk on 'Weekend Update'), Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took their frisky byplay to the big screen in this giddy, fast-paced maternal comedy. Fey, sticking fairly close to the persona she established in '30 Rock,' stars as an uptight, career-minded single woman who can't have a biological baby. Enter Poehler as her surrogate mother, an irresponsible hell-raiser who gives our heroine more than she bargained for. The writer and director Michael McCullers wisely hews to the dynamics of classic comedy teams, with Fey as the straight woman and Poehler as the wild child; their snob vs. slob relationship specifically (and delightfully) recalls Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in 'The Odd Couple.' 'Thanksgiving' (Aug. 17) Stream it here. For a good long while, the best film in the rather uneven filmography of the horror director Eli Roth was a short: his winking faux-trailer for a Thanksgiving-set slasher movie, one of several fictitious coming attractions used as filler for the exploitation-style double feature 'Grindhouse.' So it was good, common sense for Roth to expand that burst of laughs and gore into this 2023 feature, in which a crazed killer in pilgrim attire hacks his way through a small Massachusetts town over the holiday. Opening with a Black Friday sale gone horribly (and hilariously) awry, Roth's film deftly mixes blood-soaked suspense with witty winks to previous holiday horror classics like 'Halloween' and 'Silent Night, Deadly Night.' 'Gangs of London': Seasons 1-2 (Aug. 19) Stream it here. The kinetic action movie director Gareth Evans ('The Raid: Redemption,' 'Havoc') created (with Matt Flannery) this kinetic, thrilling adaptation of the London Studio video game. And while the phrase 'video game adaptation' may not promise much, Evans — who wrote and directed several key early episodes — and a pool of talented writers and directors make 'Gangs' into a pulpy, breathless blast. And there are no slouches in the cast: Joe Cole ('Peaky Blinders') is terrific as the heir apparent to a London crime family while Colm Meaney is ferocious as his father and mentor. 'My heart is full as I say thank you to every single person who made Poppa's House such a meaningful experience. To the incredible cast you brought so much heart, soul, and joy to every scene. It was an absolute honor to share the screen with you and create something special together. To the writers, producers, directors, and the entire crew you were the heartbeat of this show. 'A very special thank you to my son, Damon Jr. working beside you has been one of the greatest joys of my life,' he continued. 'And to my incredible family, siblings, children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, who showed up as writers, guest stars, and creative forces you made this journey even more meaningful. It's such a blessing to have so much love on one set and to be able to create and laugh with family and friends. 'Though Poppa's House is coming to a close, I'm walking away with deep gratitude, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories. This show gave me more than I could've ever imagined. 'To everyone who watched, supported, and believed in us thank you. Your love means everything. On to the next chapter, with nothing but love in my heart.❤️' Essence Atkins, who played Ivy on the show, shared Wayans Sr.'s post on her Instagram story, with the caption '#grateful'. In Poppa's House, Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. star as father and son opposite Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson. Wayans Sr. portrays the legendary talk radio host and happily divorced 'Poppa,' who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host is hired. His home life is no better, as the patriarch of the family finds himself still parenting his adult son, a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband. CBS cancels 'Poppa's House' after one season despite full-season order

CBS has officially canceled the comedy series Poppa's House after just one season. Starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., the multi-camera sitcom will not return for a second season, making it the only freshman scripted series on CBS to be canceled for the 2025–2026 lineup. Despite earning a full-season order in November 2024, including five additional episodes, Poppa's House fell short in ratings compared to other CBS comedy hits like Ghosts, The Neighborhood, and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage—all of which were renewed. The cancellation comes after CBS weighed its remaining comedy slots against pilots including DMV, Zarna, and a planted spinoff of The Neighborhood. Ultimately, DMV secured the series order, ending the run for Poppa's House despite its star power and solid performance. Produced by CBS Studios, the series featured Damon Wayans as 'Poppa,' a veteran radio host navigating changing times at work with a new female co-host, while also struggling with parenting his adult son, played by Damon Wayans Jr. The cast also included Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson. The show blended family comedy with workplace humor and generational clashes. While CBS had asked the production to reduce costs to improve renewal odds, the budget—driven by its A-list talent—likely played a role in the final decision. With the cancellation, Poppa's House joins other CBS dramas like FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, and S.W.A.T., all of which are not returning. The only CBS scripted series still awaiting a renewal decision is The Equalizer, which remains on the bubble for now.

ABC Announces Additional Series Renewals; What Other Network Series Are Waiting Word On Their Fates?

SHIFTING GEARS - TIM ALLEN, KAT DENNINGS (Photo by Raymond Liu/Disney via Getty Images) 'Tis the season for renewals. ABC has announced new seasons for dramas 9-1-1, Grey's Anatomy, The Rookie and Will Trent, and the recently introduced Tim Allen/Kat Dennings sitcom Shifting Gears. The pick-up for Grey's Anatomy, already the longest running scripted medical drama in television history, takes it into season 22. The prior record holder was NBC's ER, which ran for 15 seasons. That leaves the future of one other ABC series, Doctor Odyssey, still to be announced (and likely to be given a new season). Veteran ABC comedy The Conners concludes on April 23 after seven seasons. Elsewhere, a number of other scripted primetime TV series are awaiting word on their fates. On CBS, The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah, and freshman comedy Poppa's House, featuring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., are on the fence. While the cancellations of crime solvers FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International and S.W.A.T. could bode well for The Equalizer, CBS will likely be shopping around for a new lead-out from the final season of Monday sitcom The Neighborhood in 2025-26. A potential candidate: the planned spinoff of The Neighborhood focused on Marty (Marcel Spears) and Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney). LOS ANGELES - FEBRUARY 24: "Poppa's House": Pictured (L-R): Damon Wayans as Poppa and Damon Wayans ... More Jr. as Junior. (Photo by Robert Voets/CBS via Getty Images) On NBC, there are only two official renewals: sitcoms St. Denis Medical and Happy's Place. Considered a sure thing, of course, is anything from producer Dick Wolf (Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU). And chances of new seasons for comedies Lopez vs. Lopez and Night Court are possible given more episodes are needed for off-network. That leaves on the fence dramas Brilliant Minds, Found, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, The Hunting Party and Suits LA. Unless Grosse Pointe Society beats the odds and attracts an audience in its new Friday 8 p.m. ET time period, it is the most likely to go. Most likely to stay, perhaps, is the currently low-rated rated Suits LA, which NBC is expected to be patient with. SUITS LA — "Suits LA Premiere Celebration" — Pictured: (l-r) Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg, Aaron ... More Korsh, Lex Scott Davis, Stephen Amell — (Photo by: Todd Williamson/NBC via Getty Images) Fox, meanwhile, just announced four season renewals for its animated mainstays The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers, plus the return of American Dad! Also confirmed are crime drama Murder in a Small Town and animated Krapopolis and Universal Basic Guys. That leaves dramas Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, The Cleaning Lady and Rescue: High-Surf; live action comedies Animal Control and Going Dutch; and animated comedy Grimsburg. With three half seasons already produced, the critically acclaimed Animal Control is the safest bet of the bunch to be granted a renewal. ‘The Equalizer' & ‘Poppa's House' Remain On The Bubble In Another Tough Year For CBS Renewals

The Season 2 renewal of Watson today left two CBS scripted series on the bubble, veteran drama The Equalizer and freshman comedy Poppa's House. The good news is that conversations on both are continuing; the bad news is that both are looking at an already packed 2025-26 CBS slate with little room left. And while their ratings have been OK, the numbers are in a range of CBS shows that already have been canceled as the network is facing tough cancellation decisions for a second year in a row as its scripted lineup has been performing. In the case of Poppa's House, starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., I hear there are ongoing budget talks, and trimming the cost of the sitcom would improve its chances. Still, Poppa's House is being evaluated alongside three pilots — DMV, Zarna and The Neighborhood planted spinoff — for what I hear is likely one comedy slot next season. (CBS already renewed Monday comedy The Neighborhood for an eighth and final season as well as Thursday half-hours Ghosts and Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage.) More from Deadline Stephen Colbert Praises Taylor Tomlinson & CBS Execs As 'After Midnight' Comes To An End CBS Starts 2025-26 Promo Campaign, Confirms 'Boston Blue' & 'Sheriff Country' Fall Launches 'Yellowstone' Spinoff Series With Luke Grimes & Spencer Hudnut Eyed By CBS As Deadline reported earlier this month, CBS has ordered backup scripts for both DMV and Zarna. The single-camera DMV, starring Colin From Accounts' Harriet Dyer and SNL alum Tim Meadows, is already in the can and tested well. The multi-cam Zarna, headlined by comedian Zarna Garg, is taping tonight after a good table read. Both are said to be in serious contention, which would make it harder for Poppa's House and The Neighborhood offshoot though all are still in the running. (All except Warner Bros. TV-produced Zarna come from CBS Studios.) The decision may come down to scheduling and budget. Vampire comedy Eternally Yours from Ghosts showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, which recently opened a development room, is on a different track and not expected to compete for a slot with Poppa's House and the three pilots. Like last year, I hear The Equalizer star/executive producer Queen Latifah is negotiating her deal with lead studio Universal Television which has been looking to trim costs on the show. Things are looking good on that front, I hear, and conversations between CBS and Universal TV are ongoing, sources said. People close to the show are hopeful that The Equalizer would get a renewal for what could be a sixth and final season. (If that doesn't happen, the upcoming Season 5 finale could potentially serve as a series finale, I hear.) There has been little talk about The Equalizer planted spinoff so it's unclear whether the mothership could be used to launch the offshoot next season. If that happens, the two shows may have to split the season with a fall and midseason order, respectively, because CBS' drama roster is packed. The network has canceled three dramas so far, FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International and S.W.A.T., with Blue Bloods ending after a brief run at the start of the season. But CBS already has two new drama series for fall, Fire Country spinoff Sheriff Country and Blue Bloods offshoot Boston Blue, and it also renewed all three of its freshman dramas, Matlock, NCIS: Origins and Watson. As Deadline reported earlier this month, the new FBI spinoff (fka FBI CIA) is eying a straight-to-series order — in part contingent on casting — with a new script commissioned. Add to that an enthusiastic early reaction to drama pilot Einstein, starring Criminal Minds alum Matthew Gray Gubler, which just wrapped production, and the competition for whatever little drama space on the schedule is left will be fierce. Robert and Michelle King's Cupertino script remains an internal favorite but, like Eternally Yours, it is on a different track. And then there is the potential Yellowstone spinoff starring Luke Grimes, which has been on a secret corporate track. There is no active ongoing talk but it is conceivable that CBS could announce an early series pickup of one of its pilot/script contenders for the 2026-27 season like the network did with Sheriff Country last May for 2025-26. It would fit into CBS' long-term development strategy. Best of Deadline Which Colleen Hoover Books Are Becoming Movies?
