KU Jayhawks fall in Big 12 baseball championship semis. Will they host in NCAAs?
Kansas coach Dan Fitzgerald exchanges words with umpires before being ejected from the game in sixth inning of a game against Texas on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin. No. 3 seed TCU, a team that swept a three-game series against Kansas from April 11-13 in Fort Worth, Texas, slugged the No. 2 seed Jayhawks 11-1 in the semifinals of the Big 12 baseball championship Friday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The game was called after eight innings because of the run rule. Advertisement The Horned Frogs (39-17), who have won three games in a row and seven of nine, advanced into Saturday's 6 p.m. final against No. 4 seed Arizona (38-18). Meanwhile the Jayhawks (43-15), who had their six-game winning streak snapped by the Horned Frogs, will now have to wait until Monday to learn their upcoming assignment in the 64-team NCAA Tournament. KU had been hoping to win three games at the Big 12 tourney and convince the NCAA Tournament committee the Jayhawks were worthy of hosting a four-team NCAA regional. The announcers working Friday's game on ESPN+ speculated the Jayhawks were locks to make the tournament, but not as hosts. TCU, which erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the second inning Friday, will face the No. 4 seed Arizona Wildcats, who defeated No. 1 seed West Virginia 12-1 in another semifinal Friday. Advertisement KU reached the semifinals by rallying from a four-run deficit to defeat No. 7 seed Oklahoma State, 7-6, on Thursday. On Saturday, Derek Cerda had two hits for the Jayhawks, who mustered just five hits off a pair of TCU pitchers. TCU's Jack Bell went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. The Horned Frogs slugged 16 hits off five KU pitchers. KU's Cooper Moore (7-2) was the losing pitcher. Louis Rodriguez (5-1) earned the win.

ANALYSIS: If not WVU, then who wins Big 12 baseball tournament?
MORGANTOWN — With a move to single elimination and no team ranked above No. 23 in the country, but with six teams in the top 35 of the RPI, the Big 12 baseball tournament is wide open. The 23rd-ranked Mountaineers have never been in the position as the Big 12's top seed before. As far as that goes, No. 25 Kansas has never been as high as the No. 2 seed it earned this season. The league has the possibility of putting eight teams into the NCAA tournament, but there's also a chance the league gets no regional hosts. 'Nobody can go full steam and the only thing that matters is winning the (Big 12) tournament, unless you're not going to play in a regional and you have to win it,' WVU head coach Steve Sabins said. 'We have six teams that the only thing that matters is the (conference) tournament, and you have another half that wants to win, but doesn't have to win the tournament. That's the difference, essentially. That's why it can get a little bit wanky in pitching and setting people up.' With all of that in mind, if the Mountaineers don't sweep their way through the Big 12 tournament, there are a few others in line to hoist the trophy. If not WVU, then who? Here are your top possibilities: The Jayhawks (42-14) put together a historic season under Big 12 Coach of the Year Dan Fitzgerald, who has Kansas in line to play in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014, when it was also a regional host. Kansas enters the tournament on a five-game winning streak, which includes a sweep of WVU to end the regular season. The Jayhawks' pitching was the story in that series, coming up with two shutouts. The rest of the season was about Kansas' offense. Two more home runs will give the Jayhawks 100 dingers on the season and Jackson Hauge and Brady Ballinger – a combined 33 home runs – form the league's top one-two punch. What can go wrong: The Jayhawks may wind up with the toughest quarterfinal draw with a potential matchup against seventh-seeded Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are the defending Big 12 tournament champs, were the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 this season and have won 11 of their last 14 games entering the tournament. The Cowboys have played in 11 consecutive NCAA tournaments, which is the fourth longest streak in the country. That was in jeopardy in mid-April, right before the Cowboys started to play like the team that was expected to win the Big 12 at the start of the season. Oklahoma State is 27-22 heading into the tournament, which doesn't look like being worthy of the NCAA tourney, but the Cowboys played the most difficult schedule of any Big 12 team this season. It's that strength of schedule (13th in the nation) that has them in position to play in another NCAA regional. Also, when you have the league's top MLB draft prospect – Nolan Schubart – anything can happen. Schubart has five home runs and has driven in nine over his last six games. Then there is also starting pitcher Harrison Bodendorf, who went 10-1 with a 2.43 ERA this season. Need to know: Oklahoma State is 10-5 in the Big 12 tournament since it was moved to Globe Life Field in 2022. No other Big 12 team can match that type of success in the league tournament. The Horned Frogs (37-17) have the Big 12's top freshman in outfielder Sawyer Strosnider (.360, 10 HR, 50 RBI) and quite possibly the top 1-2 starting pitching combination in Tommy LaPour (7-2, 3.11 ERA) and Mason Brassfield (5-1, 3.59 ERA). And TCU is 6-2 at Globe Life Field over the past two Big 12 tournaments, including a tournament title in 2023. At the moment, the Horned Frogs are projected as the lone Big 12 regional host in the NCAA tournament, according to Baseball America and D1 Baseball. Fitting right in: The Horned Frogs played a great schedule, are accustomed to success in the Big 12 tournament, and when you look at the Big 12 stats, they aren't bad at anything. If WVU doesn't win the Big 12 tournament, then TCU would be a pretty good bet.

Kansas pulls off sweep of No. 17 WVU by throwing a second shutout in three games
GRANVILLE — A Big 12 baseball title was celebrated by WVU on Saturday inside Kendrick Family Ballpark. The best team in the conference just may have been in the opposite dugout, though. Kansas wrapped up second place in the Big 12 with a 7-0 victory over the 17th-ranked Mountaineers, completing a three-game sweep along the way. BOX SCORE WVU (40-13, 19-9 Big 12) was awarded the league championship back on Friday, following Arizona's State's loss against Oklahoma State, but it's the Jayhawks (42-14, 20-10) who spent the last three days in Morgantown flexing their muscles. 'It was great for them. They came in here and beat us up pretty good,' WVU catcher Logan Sauve said. 'That never feels good. They're obviously a really talented team. They have some good arms and can really swing it.' Kansas' climb up the Big 12 ranks is a story that begins with going 4-20 in conference play back in 2022 — the season before head coach Dan Fitzgerald was first hired — but the Jayhawks will head into next week's Big 12 tournament in Arlington, Texas as the team to beat. WVU can't argue against that, not after getting swept for the first time at home since 2021 and getting shut out for the second time in three games. 'They rolled in here and swept the No. 1 team in the league,' WVU head coach Steve Sabins said. 'They're a good team and they didn't have to use their bullpen very much, because their starting pitching did so well.' On the flip side, WVU will have the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament, but the Mountaineers will enter postseason play having lost eight of their last 11 games. WVU is also 0-6 in the Big 12 tournament since it was moved to the home of the Texas Rangers in 2022. 'The last two weeks have been pretty tough on us all the way around,' Sauve said. 'At some point, you have to believe it's going to flip again. We have that type of belief in each other.' WVU's offense was the main suspect to the Mountaineers' sorrows against the Jayhawks, who scored more runs Saturday than the Mountaineers scored the entire series. Over the three games, WVU finished 5 of 41 (.122) with runners on base and Kansas' pitching staff rarely provided any help, walking just six over 27 innings of play. 'We never got anything going the entire time,' Sabins said. 'I really feel good about our starting pitching. How many times do you play great defense and have good starting pitching and struggle like we did? It's not very normal. 'The offense wasn't very good, but all year we've been averaging nine runs per game, so you feel like that's not going to be something that lasts.' The Mountaineers won't play until 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Big 12 quarterfinals against the winner of Cincinnati-Baylor. WVU swept Cincinnati during the regular season, but did not face Baylor. WVU's starting pitching was a bright spot against the Jayhawks. On Saturday, Jack Kartsonas went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out eight. He left the game with WVU trailing 1-0. 'Incredible effort from Jack Kartsonas,' Sabins said. 'He's been a warrior for us. He wasn't his best version in the first two innings, but then found it and got hot.' Meanwhile, WVU's offense went cold. The Mountaineers never had two runners on base at the same time on Saturday and were limited to just two hits. Kansas pitcher Kannon Carr earned his fifth win of the season. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and no runs. Manning West went the rest of the way to earn his first save of the season.
