Off-duty SCDF officer dies, his 15-year-old pillion rider hurt after Punggol accident with 2 vans

Daniel Lai The Straits Times Aug 12, 2025 An off-duty Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer died on the morning of Aug 12 following an accident involving a motorcycle and two vans at the junction of Punggol Way and Sumang Link. The police and the SCDF said they were alerted to the accident at about 6.45am. The 50-year-old male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, and his male pillion rider, 15, was taken conscious to KK Women's and Children's hospital, the authorities said. Two male van drivers, aged 40 and 54, are assisting with police investigations, they added. In the later part of the video, a blue tent can be seen alongside a motorcycle. Police vehicles and officers can also be seen at the accident site. "SCDF extends our deepest condolences to the family of the late officer. SCDF is in contact with family and is providing assistance during this time of grief," SCDF said. In a composite video posted on Singapore Roads Facebook page at around 12.30pm, a few people can be seen holding up a large white sheet of cloth in front of a white minivan to shield the public from viewing the victim. This is the second fatal motorcyclist accident in two days, as reported by The Straits Times. On the evening of Aug 11, a 22-year-old male motorcyclist was pronounced dead by SCDF paramedics after a traffic accident on PIE. According to the latest traffic statistics from the police, the number of people killed and injured in traffic accidents hit a five-year high in 2024, with 139 traffic accidents resulting in fatalities in 2024. Motorcyclists remain disproportionately involved in traffic incidents that result in injuries or death, police statistics showed. Motorcycles made up 14.7 per cent of Singapore's total vehicle population in 2024, but motorcyclists or pillion riders were involved in 55.2 per cent of all traffic accidents and accounted for 59.9 per cent of traffic fatalities that year, said the police. A dashcam video posted on Facebook page Singapore Incidents shows a car travelling along the extreme right lane of Bideford Road, next to Paragon shopping centre. As the car approaches the overhead bridge connecting the mall and Al-Falah Mosque, a lorry in the middle lane can be seen applying its brakes, just before a woman dashes across the extreme right lane. She is then hit by the car, shattering the vehicle's windshield. The impact sends the woman tumbling onto the road. A male car driver, 43, is assisting with investigations, police said. This is the latest accident involving pedestrians caught in dangerous situations while crossing the road. At the time of the accident, the red man pedestrian signal was showing. On July 23, a nine-year-old boy was taken conscious to the hospital after an accident involving a car at the junction of Moulmein Road and Sinaran Drive.
