Iraq receives largest US trade delegation

Baghdad ( – The US Chamber of Commerce sent a delegation representing almost 60 American businesses to Baghdad in an effort to promote fair and balanced commerce between the United States and Iraq. According to a statement released by the US Embassy in Iraq, the step aims to enhance private sector connections between the two countries. To improve relations between the commercial sectors in the United States and Iraq, the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce and the US Chamber of Commerce signed a crucial memorandum of understanding on Monday. This alliance is expected to promote sustained economic cooperation between the two countries. According to media reports, Baghdad wants to keep its diplomatic and economic ties with Washington, its strategic ally, balanced. According to data issued by the Executive Office of the President of the United States, the estimated value of US goods trade with Iraq was $9.1 billion in 2024. Early Tuesday, the US Embassy in Iraq said that a group of 101 individuals, representing around 60 US firms in the energy, technology, and health sectors, are visiting Iraq this week, the state news agency (INA) reported. During the visit, which extends from April 7 to 9, the delegation will meet with senior Iraqi officials, interact with Iraqi companies, and sign a number of agreements. During a reception ceremony for the trade delegation in Baghdad, the Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Baghdad, Daniel Rubinstein, said that the visit aims to strengthen trade partnerships between the two countries. The step follows US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 39 percent customs tariff on Iraqi imports and the Iraqi cabinet's instructions to enhance banking and financial services between US and Iraqi firms as well as to strengthen bilateral trade connections with the US.

A statement from the media office of the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "First Deputy Speaker Mohsen Al-Mandalawi received the Charge d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in Iraq, Daniel Rubinstein, at his residence." The statement added that "at the beginning of the meeting, Rubinstein offered his congratulations to Al-Mandalawi on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr," expressing "his wishes for greater security and stability for Iraq and the region." He continued, "The two sides discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States, emphasizing the importance of developing cooperation on political and economic issues and promoting joint investments to achieve the mutual interests of both countries. They also discussed the security situation in Iraq and its impact on the economic, investment, and political sectors, emphasizing the importance of political stability as the most important pillar for the success of the democratic experience." According to the statement, Al-Mandlawi stressed "the importance of continuing joint coordination on issues of common interest, emphasizing Iraq's pivotal role in regional stability and the need to halt violations against regional countries and for major powers to exercise their role in this regard." The statement noted that "the meeting witnessed an exchange of views on regional developments, in addition to discussing frameworks for ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the field of combating terrorism and enhancing regional security."
