AFL 2025: Collingwood will keep Steele Sidebottom and Darcy Moore on ice for its clash with North Melbourne
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. In-form Collingwood veteran Steele Sidebottom will sit out of this weekend's clash with North Melbourne to manage a 'grumbling back'. Sidebottom has delivered a brilliant opening half of the season, highlighted by Anzac Day Medal honours in the wet against Essendon. Collingwood coach Craig McRae said Sidebottom was due for a rest and the flare up in his back paved the way for it to be this week. 'Steele is going to rest this week, we'll manage him, that's been the plan for a number of weeks. He's had a bit of a grumbling back,' McRae said. 'But he's had that for, I want to say, the last six or seven years, to be honest. 'Every week he said 'nah, I'll be right, we'll get there' and then slowly but surely he's expressed himself a bit more. 'We've had to deliver a plan to manage him this week.' Steele Sidebottom (left) will be rested this week. Picture: Michael Klein Captain Darcy Moore (shoulder) won't play this week, while Dan Houston (calf) will be named despite showing discomfort at training. Moore missed last week after hurting his shoulder in the dying minutes of Collingwood's previous win over Fremantle. Houston sat out of main training earlier in the week and did some fitness testing on Thursday with heavy bandaging on his right leg. McRae said Houston 'did a great job to get up' and will face the Kangaroos unless he pulls up sore on Friday. 'Dan had a bigger limp at the start of the week, so we're rapt with how he's gone about it,' he said. 'He'll play at the moment as long as he doesn't pull up sore tomorrow. We'll name him, credit to him he did a great job to get up this week. 'It's looking unlikely for Darcy at this stage, I think we'll rule him out … he's another one who put himself right in the frame to play, unfortunately there's just a little bit of lingering stuff in the AC joint at the moment.' Hot Pies cool Crows as eight-year streak continues
Collingwood have continued their recent dominance of Adelaide, holding off a late challenge for a hard-fought 10-point win at the MCG. Jeremy Howe shone in defence and Scott Pendlebury put the clamps on Crows skipper Jordan Dawson as the Magpies prevailed 11.12 (78) to 10.8 (68) in wintry conditions on Saturday. Dawson's goal in time-on of the last quarter gave Adelaide a sniff as they trimmed the margin to nine points, but the Pies hung on in the desperate final stages. It was Collingwood's 10th consecutive win over Adelaide in a run that started in 2018, after a draw between the sides the previous year. And it sent Craig McRae's side to the top of the AFL ladder - at least temporarily - with an 8-2 record, while the Crows (6-4) sit fifth. Howe marshalled the backline without injured skipper Darcy Moore, and fellow Magpie veteran Pendlebury blunted Dawson after quarter-time. Josh Daicos (29 disposals) and Howe (17) combined for 24 intercept possessions, and while Nick Daicos wasn't at his brilliant best he still finished with 28 touches and a game-high seven clearances. Izak Rankine tried to lift Adelaide with 26 disposals and one goal, but put two crucial set shots out on the full just minutes before Collingwood took control late in the third quarter. Rory Laird (27 disposals) and Jake Soligo (23 touches, five clearances, two goals) also fought hard for the Crows, and Darcy Fogarty kicked a game-high four goals. Former Port Adelaide star Dan Houston struck the first blow for Collingwood with a 50-metre bomb and the teams went goal-for-goal until Bobby Hill pounced on a defensive error to volley through his first major from close range. It gave the Magpies a seven-point buffer at quarter-time despite an 11-disposal term from Dawson, who set up a Taylor Walker goal with a brilliant left-foot pass. Fogarty kicked three in the second quarter alone, but it was Collingwood who kept their noses in front by five points at the main break as rain fell. Adelaide's Dan Curtin and Rankine both wasted rare set shots in a tight third quarter, the latter putting two out on the full, before Soligo snatched the lead when he snapped truly at a boundary throw-in close to goal. But Rankine's horror term continued when he was chased down and caught holding the ball by Beau McCreery. McCreery converted to put the Pies back in front, and a 50-metre penalty against Fogarty allowed Darcy Cameron to extend the home side's advantage. Jamie Elliott added a third consecutive goal in time-on to give Collingwood a 16-point buffer at the final change. Will Hoskin-Elliott wrapped up Josh Worrell in the goal square and converted his free kick early in the last term and the Magpies held their opponents at arm's length, despite Adelaide kicking the last two goals of the match. The 67,697-strong crowd marked the biggest home-and-away attendance in history between these two clubs and second-highest overall, behind only their 2002 preliminary final.

AFL in meltdown as ‘cover up' exposed before league forced to backflip
The AFL has been accused of a 'cover up' with the league plunged into disarray on the back of previously unheard audio emerging on Tuesday. AFL House is reported to be in crisis with the Lachie Schultz concussion storm taking several twists. The Collingwood star was evidently dazed after an ugly fourth-quarter collision with Fremantle's Jordan Clark during the Magpies' win on Thursday night at Optus Stadium. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. The small forward struggled to gather himself in the aftermath, even while in the hands of medical staff, but play was allowed to continue as the Pies went forward and kicked a goal. Sixteen seconds of open play elapsed between the collision and Jamie Elliott taking a mark inside the 50m arc with no whistle from the umpires to halt play. Collingwood captain Darcy Moore said after the game 'it didn't feel right' for play to continue. You can listen to the new audio in the video player above. The AFL on Friday released a statement saying the umpires 'did not see the injured player at the time so play continued'. AFL executive general manager of football Laura Kane has now been forced to come forward and admit the information given by the four umpires to AFL general manager of football performance Josh Mahoney was 'inconsistent' with new audio first uncovered by Channel 7's Agenda Setters. The audio, which can be heard in the above video player, showed the umpires were clearly aware of Schultz' condition but allowed play to continue anyway. The umpires running the game were Justin Power, Simon Meredith, Craig Fleer and Martin Rodger. Meredith is one of the most experienced umpires in the game and has overseen 509 games and nine grand finals. The audio shows one of the whistle-blowers said: 'Got an injured player in the middle.' The same umpire then said: 'I'm watching. Let it go. Let it go.' Kane on Tuesday issued a statement to Channel 7 addressing the damning audio clip. 'The statement we released was incorrect, but we were given the wrong information from the umpires. It's inconsistent with the vision,' Kane said. 'They (the umpires) were going off memory and not the vision and we should always look at the vision. 'All the field umpires from the game have all been coached this afternoon that they should have stopped the game. 'Having said that, this is on me. It's the footy department that runs umpiring and that sits with me.' Port Adelaide great turned footy commentator Kane Cornes on Seven said 'those guys (umpires) should not be umpiring for a month'. Cornes said the AFL was 'in crisis' as a result of the new audio. Leading footy reporter Jon Ralph on Tuesday said the AFL was not in a position to be able to say if further action will be taken against the four umpires. 'Laura Kane is extremely disappointed by the umpires,' Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy's Midweek Tackle. 'My question to the AFL tonight is: will those umpires be stood down? 'The league could not provide clarification on that, they are still working through it.' Ralph said: 'The cover up is always bigger than the crime.' There were more twists to emerge on Tuesday night with veteran reporter Caroline Wilson reporting Kane's 'coaching' meeting with the umpires involved was in reality a 'pretty tense meeting'. Wilson said on Agenda Setters the Schultz incident had been 'sickening'. Meanwhile, AFL journalist Tom Morris on Tuesday night told Channel 9's Footy Classified umpires are not happy with Kane's handling of the incident. Morris said he has been told by one umpire: 'A large section of umpires are filthy. They feel they continually get thrown under the bus'. Schultz will miss at least Collingwood's Round 10 clash with Adelaide as he progresses through concussion protocols.

Moore, De Goey sidelined as Pies prepare for Crows
Collingwood have lost captain Darcy Moore for their big AFL home game against Adelaide and Jordan De Goey has suffered another injury setback. Moore suffered an AC joint injury in the last quarter of Friday's win over Fremantle. The Magpies said on Tuesday it was moderate grade but were unsure whether he would return for their round-11 game against North Melbourne. Collingwood's defensive general also missed the Anzac Day win over Essendon because of an ear injury. De Goey's bad injury run continues, with the Magpies saying he has an Achilles tendon injury. He was rested for the Fremantle game and went to a specialist when he had Achilles pain towards the end of last week. De Goey has started a rehabilitation program and the Magpies are yet to say when they expect him to return. The 29-year-old only played 13 games last season because of injury. Lachie Schultz is also out of the Crows game because of his concussion in the last term against the Dockers.
