Cambodia - Thailand Ceasefire Brings Hope To Conflict-hit Border Communities
By Vijian Paramasivam PHNOM PENH, July 30 (Bernama) -- Peace and tranquillity, which had eluded northern Cambodia for five days, returned at midnight on Monday, easing the tense atmosphere along the hostile borders with Thailand. The news of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand was much welcomed, akin to the tropical monsoon showers, which bring a temporary respite to Cambodians, especially to those living in remote northern provinces. bootstrap slideshow Cambodian geopolitical experts have welcomed the ceasefire agreement and regard it as a major diplomatic achievement, with Malaysia leading the peace talks. "The truce comes as a welcome diplomatic breakthrough and demonstrates the mutual desire to see regional peace and stability between both governments," a Cambodian political economist and columnist, Dr Darin Duch, told Bernama Wednesday. "It's a complicated situation, to be sure, but momentum in diplomacy should not be ignored. Recognition of the ceasefire opens a path for additional discussions and confidence-building. "There are still structural issues to be addressed, but I am hopeful that ongoing dialogue and, as part of this, international legal tools, regional dialogue between the warring parties will be instrumental in addressing these," said Darin. The ceasefire occurred at a crucial juncture. When the armed conflict between the two countries broke out, border activities came to a grinding halt, which restricted crossings and led to social and economic turmoil. Tourism was impacted, and workers who crossed the border for trade, work, study, medical treatment, or social visits faced hardship. Darin said that ASEAN's role in brokering negotiations between Cambodia and Thailand has proven that regional diplomacy can work when its members are committed.

Lauryn 'Pumpkin' Shannon Prepares to Drop Bombshell That Her New Boyfriend Is Ex-Husband Josh's Cousin: 'Gonna Be Awkward'
Lauryn "Pumpkin" Shannon revealed details about her secret new romance on Mama June: Family Crisis While in conversation with her friend and colleague Paisley, Lauryn revealed that she was dating Darin — a man who happens to be the cousin of her now-ex-husband, Josh Efrid "But they're not blood cousins!" Lauryn said Mama June: Family Crisis. Lauryn "Pumpkin" Shannon has some big news that she's been hiding from her family — and former husband Josh Efrid. On this week's episode of Mama June: Family Crisis, airing on Friday, July 11, Lauryn opened up about her new relationship for the first time to her friend and colleague Paisley. But before doing so, Lauryn asked that Paisley not "tell nobody" what was going on because she doesn't want "drama." "I've known him for a really long time. We were friends back in school, and then, he messaged me on social media," Lauryn, 25, began. "We've just kind of been talking, and it's kind of nice." Noting that the mystery man is "sweet" and "does things for me without me having to ask," Lauryn also said the duo will also "go places" and she'll "do things I've never really done before." She then revealed that "his name is Darin," adding that he has "no" criminal record, which is something she later told the cameras she's "learned the hard way" from her mom June Shannon's dating past. "The only reason I haven't really told anybody is just because it's, like, a little... It's not awkward for me. I just think it's going to be awkward for other people," Lauryn continued. "Why?" asked Paisley and Lauryn responded, "Um, because ... Darin and Josh, they're cousins." "But they're not blood cousins!" added Lauryn, who explained that Darin "is related to Josh's stepfather, which Josh's stepdad is like a father to him, but there's no blood running." As Lauryn asked if it was "weird," Paisley suggested it's "maybe just a little complicated." Paisley then asked if she planned to "tell Josh," which Lauryn was against at the time. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! "I just feel like there's a lot more to discuss with him than my dating life," Lauryn said. "I don't know if we're quite there yet. I mean, do you think I should?" "For sure," Paisley concluded. The next day, Lauryn arrived at the warehouse and informed Paisley about her "cool" romance-filled evening. "It's fun. I think that we have a good time together, and we laugh, but I don't want to rush into anything because I feel like I did that with Josh," the mother of four shared. Given that she has "been tied down for 10 years," Lauryn said she was only interested in having "fun." She also explained how they've made their blossoming relationship work in secret thus far. "Honestly, though, we go out to eat and go out of town to eat, or get it to go and eat back at the house or whatever," she revealed to which Paisley responded, "Well, it is a small town." "That's what I'm saying, everybody be talking. I hate it. Everybody's in your business," Lauryn added. "I can't keep it on the down-low forever. What am I gonna do? Just never go out to eat, never go out on a date?" Because of this, Lauryn believed she had allowed "other people control my life" since she was unable to be forthcoming about her new relationship. Paisley pointed out that it will be "worse" if Josh found out about the new romance from "somebody else before he finds out from you," leading Lauryn to add: "What do I even say, Paisley?" "Me and Josh are going to make the divorce final," Lauryn said while getting ready to head out to do just that. "I am ready to be free from my marriage. For me, that like being able to do what I want to do, going and hanging out with my friends. Like, I am okay. So, let's just hope that we can be done with this part." Sitting in his car outside the lawyer's office, Josh called this the "hardest day of my life." "Leaving something I thought I'd have for the rest of my life is not the best feeling in the world," he continued. "These times have been super tough on me, and I'm sure it's vice versa in some weird way for her too, but I really don't want to go in here and sign these papers, if we're being honest." Josh was then shown waiting on the steps for Lauryn. As she approached, he asked if she was "sure" she wanted to end their marriage for good. To that, she said, "Yeah, you know, I think it's probably what's best." The pair entered their lawyer's office together to sign the paperwork for their divorce. It was a quick process, which was completed with a stamp from a notary. But before they left, their lawyer had asked Lauryn if she wanted her "maiden name back" or if she wanted to "keep it Efrid." "Um, I'll probably take my name back," Lauryn said after a brief pause, leaving Josh to have an adverse reaction. The former couple exited the office together. On their way out, Lauryn asked if Josh was "good" and if he needed to "talk about anything." In response, Josh said: "You know, I really don't think I have anything else to talk about today, Ms. Shannon." is now available in the Apple App Store! Inflation could not end sooner for Javier Milei
In Wild Tales, one of the most famous Argentine films of recent years, the character played by the actor Ricardo Darin decries the cost of a birthday cake he is buying for his daughter. 'Is it imported?' he asks the women behind the counter, a nod towards the eye-wateringly high cost of imported goods in Argentina. At the end of May, in a case of life-imitating-art, Darin inadvertently sparked a row with Javier Milei's government over the cost of another staple foodstuff: the empanada. Appearing on La Noche de Mirtha, a cozy evening talk show, Ricardo Darin decried their cost, saying a dozen empanadas can now easily cost 48,000 pesos – roughly equivalent to £30. This off-the-cuff statement prompted a rebuke from the country's economy minister and a slather of abuse from online libertarians. It was a rare intervention from someone who – unusual as this is for an Argentine – has always kept his cards close to his chest politically. Darin is undoubtedly one of Argentina's most successful actors, starring in the Oscar-winning The Secret in Their Eyes, which was subject to a disappointing English-language remake starring Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, and he is currently helming the Netflix series El Eternauta. That even he put his head above the parapet is perhaps a sign of patience with Milei's government wearing thin among some sections of society. Empanadas, meant to be a cheap and affordable snack, are a good barometer for how much prices have risen. Darin's comments came during a discussion about Milei's latest attempt to get Argentines' dollars out of their mattresses and into the country's banks. 'Who are they talking about? A dozen empanadas costs 48,000 pesos, so I don't understand what they're talking about, there are a lot of people who are having a very hard time,' Darin said. A key pledge of Milei's campaign was dollarisation of the economy; the abolishment of the peso and adoption of the US dollar. These plans appear to have been put on ice. For now, Argentina lacks sufficient reserves of foreign currency to turn them into reality. This is part of the reason for Milei's latest gambit to try and get the informal dollars held by Argentines into the system. Official estimates suggest Argentines own around $270 billion outside of the formal system. While much of this is held in foreign bank accounts, a good deal is estimated to be kept in cash. Distrustful of domestic banks since the 2001 economic crisis in which the public was blocked from withdrawing their savings before the peso was devalued, this has been the saving method of choice for most Argentines since. Milei hopes to coax this money back into the system. A tax amnesty last year gave the economy an $18 billion boost, but now he plans to go further. Anyone paying dollars into the system will not be required to account for where they got the cash. Unsurprisingly, this has been described as a money launderer's dream by several analysts. While the empanada row with Darin might suggest a frustration with regression of living standards under Milei, there is evidence that the libertarian president has some rope left. In regional elections earlier in May, his party won its first salvo in its bid to crush the centre right. Manuel Adorni, Milei's official spokesman, won the regional elections in Buenos Aires, traditionally a centre-right stronghold. Milei's La Libertad Avanza party doubled its vote count compared to the previous elections in 2023. Inflation, too, seems to be abating. Monthly inflation slowed to its lowest level in more than five years in May: 1.5 per cent. Wholesale prices even fell 0.3 per cent. Argentina is preparing for midterm elections in October this year. These are crucial for Milei. Will he solidify his position and cast off the need for compromise? Or will voters who are feeling the pinch choose to punish him?
