Inflation could not end sooner for Javier Milei
At the end of May, in a case of life-imitating-art, Darin inadvertently sparked a row with Javier Milei's government over the cost of another staple foodstuff: the empanada. Appearing on La Noche de Mirtha, a cozy evening talk show, Ricardo Darin decried their cost, saying a dozen empanadas can now easily cost 48,000 pesos – roughly equivalent to £30. This off-the-cuff statement prompted a rebuke from the country's economy minister and a slather of abuse from online libertarians.
It was a rare intervention from someone who – unusual as this is for an Argentine – has always kept his cards close to his chest politically. Darin is undoubtedly one of Argentina's most successful actors, starring in the Oscar-winning The Secret in Their Eyes, which was subject to a disappointing English-language remake starring Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, and he is currently helming the Netflix series El Eternauta. That even he put his head above the parapet is perhaps a sign of patience with Milei's government wearing thin among some sections of society.
Empanadas, meant to be a cheap and affordable snack, are a good barometer for how much prices have risen. Darin's comments came during a discussion about Milei's latest attempt to get Argentines' dollars out of their mattresses and into the country's banks. 'Who are they talking about? A dozen empanadas costs 48,000 pesos, so I don't understand what they're talking about, there are a lot of people who are having a very hard time,' Darin said.
A key pledge of Milei's campaign was dollarisation of the economy; the abolishment of the peso and adoption of the US dollar. These plans appear to have been put on ice. For now, Argentina lacks sufficient reserves of foreign currency to turn them into reality. This is part of the reason for Milei's latest gambit to try and get the informal dollars held by Argentines into the system. Official estimates suggest Argentines own around $270 billion outside of the formal system. While much of this is held in foreign bank accounts, a good deal is estimated to be kept in cash. Distrustful of domestic banks since the 2001 economic crisis in which the public was blocked from withdrawing their savings before the peso was devalued, this has been the saving method of choice for most Argentines since.
Milei hopes to coax this money back into the system. A tax amnesty last year gave the economy an $18 billion boost, but now he plans to go further. Anyone paying dollars into the system will not be required to account for where they got the cash. Unsurprisingly, this has been described as a money launderer's dream by several analysts.
While the empanada row with Darin might suggest a frustration with regression of living standards under Milei, there is evidence that the libertarian president has some rope left. In regional elections earlier in May, his party won its first salvo in its bid to crush the centre right. Manuel Adorni, Milei's official spokesman, won the regional elections in Buenos Aires, traditionally a centre-right stronghold. Milei's La Libertad Avanza party doubled its vote count compared to the previous elections in 2023. Inflation, too, seems to be abating. Monthly inflation slowed to its lowest level in more than five years in May: 1.5 per cent. Wholesale prices even fell 0.3 per cent.
Argentina is preparing for midterm elections in October this year. These are crucial for Milei. Will he solidify his position and cast off the need for compromise? Or will voters who are feeling the pinch choose to punish him?

Meghan Markle's brutal silence questioned as Harry leaves secret letter at royal event
Royal onlookers have noted Meghan Markle's ongoing silence amid her husband Prince Harry's recent troubles - despite continuing to promote her latest Netflix series Prince Harry is desperately trying to heal wounds with the royal family, but Meghan has stayed notably silent after his most recent olive branch. It has emerged that just days ago, the Duke left a secret letter at a royal event attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla. It is said that he asked a friend to discreetly leave a note and a wreath of red poppies at the Burma Star Memorial, to mark the national VJ Day commemorations. Notably, the letter was placed after Charles and Camilla left to avoid distracting from the service, which honoured the sacrifice of Second World War heroes who fought and died in the Pacific and Far East. Meanwhile, Meghan did not sign the letter. It's not the first time she's stayed quiet in recent weeks, as experts have questioned why she hasn't spoken out in support of her husband amid a 'devastating' boardroom battle. The Duke stepped down from Sentebale, the charity he founded to help children orphaned by Aids in Lesotho, earlier this year following a tense showdown with the chairwoman, Dr Sophie Chandauka. Harry was said to be devastated by the row, which saw all sides rebuked by the Charity Commission for allowing the war of words to play out so publicly. And many expected Meghan to publicly back Harry. But she has continued to hold her silence - and it's raised eyebrows amongst royal watchers. In her most recent Instagram post, Meghan pointedly continued to ignore the furore. The 44-year-old shared a video on Tuesday showing her preparing and plating up a lemon pasta spaghetti dish; prior to that, she shared a post promoting the upcoming second series of With Love Meghan. Expert Dr Tessa Dunlop told the Mirror: "Now that Meghan and Harry have signed a new Netflix deal ('looser' and apparently less lucrative than the previous $78m one but a deal nonetheless), might the Duchess find her voice? "Not the one she volubly uses to hawk As Ever wares (in conjunction with Netflix) but rather the voice Meghan famously re-found after leaving the Royal Family, the one that talked her truth to royal power and surely could talk her truth to the Sentebale fiasco? "No, really, why hasn't Meghan come out batting for Prince Harry in his latest round of verbal fisty-cuffs concerning his former African charity? After all, the Duke has consistently spoken out in support of his wife, establishing the precedent early on and against the wishes of his family when he condemned Britain's media coverage and insisted he had never before witnessed such a 'degree of pressure, scrutiny and harassment' from the press. "As it currently stands, Harry cuts a lonely figure. The Charity Commission 'identified a 'strong perception of ill treatment' swirling in the unhappy waters of his former charity, Sentebale. It was a terse ruling that exonerated no one; all parties remain incandescent, particularly the aggrieved prince, who insists the report has fallen 'troublingly short'. "In other words, the Duke of Sussex's nemesis, Dr Sophie Chanduka, is still at large, running Harry's former beloved Sentebale. The Duke could really do with some public TLC, especially from his wife, whose own issues with said Dr Chanduka were allegedly caught on camera at a polo match Sentebale fundraiser." It comes after Harry and Meghan confirmed they had extended their deal with Netflix, having signed a new "multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects". While the Duchess was quick to celebrate the signing, experts claimed that the deal is a downgrade for the couple.

BioShock 4 in trouble as studio lays off staff amid leadership shake-up
A former Diablo boss has been brought in to oversee the next BioShock game, as the sequel continues to face development woes. BioShock 4 has been shrouded in mystery ever since it was announced in 2019, but its development has hit some notable stumbling blocks over the past month. We recently heard how publisher 2K Games is overhauling certain aspects of the sequel, including the leadership at developer Cloud Chamber, after senior executives were unhappy with its progress. Cloud Chamber has now announced who will oversee the sequel, and it's someone who has some history with the BioShock franchise. As announced on X, former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson, who departed Blizzard earlier this month, will lead the BioShock franchise as the new studio head. 'I'll be heading up Cloud Chamber and overseeing development of the next BioShock game, along with franchise extensions like the in-development Netflix movie,' he wrote. 'While I'm excited to get started in the coming weeks, I recognise the studio restructuring is a difficult time for the team. I'm deeply grateful for the work done so far, and I'm committed to building a BioShock game we'll be proud of and that our players will love.' Would you kindly allow me to share some news? Some of you guessed it, I'm returning to 2K to lead a series that means a lot to me as the new Head of the BioShock Franchise. I'll be heading up Cloud Chamber and overseeing development of the next BioShock game, along with… — Rod Fergusson (@RodFergusson) August 19, 2025 Along with Diablo, Fergusson previously worked on the Gears Of War franchise. After leaving Epic Games in 2012, he joined Irrational Games to oversee the final stretch of BioShock Infinite, another project that was stuck in development hell for a decade. His appointment suggests BioShock 4 is facing similar problems, and with the CEO behind Take-Two Interactive recently affirming that the game will definitely come out, this is clearly an attempt to get things back on track. More Trending As alluded to in Fergusson's post, amid this leadership shake-up, Cloud Chamber has been hit with layoffs. These were announced by 2K Games president David Ismailer in an internal memo (via Variety). 'Work on the next BioShock game has been underway for several years,' Ismailer wrote. 'While we're excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we've made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development.' It's unclear how many roles have been impacted but, combined with the leadership change, it sounds like BioShock 4 is still a long way off yet. Beyond the upcoming sequel, a remake of the original BioShock is rumoured to be in development. Netflix is also working on a film adaptation directed by Francis Lawrence.
