Darius Slayton shines with incredible one-handed grab at Giants training camp
Observations from the Giants' training camp on Sunday: Grab Attention Darius Slayton submitted an early nominee for Catch of the Summer, making a one-handed sideline stab of a deep pass from Russell Wilson and getting his feet inbounds. It almost got surpassed in less than two hours when Cam Skattebo snared the ball while falling out of bounds after it ricocheted off of Da'Quan Felton, but Skattebo's foot was on the white paint. 3 Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton, running a route during practice at the Giants training facility in East Rutherford, NJ. Wilson was 1-for-2 in that period, but never spiked the ball. Caught My Eye The celebratory 'Turnover Chest' made an appearance when Jevon Holland leapt to intercept a pass from Wilson after it was tipped by a blitzing Dru Phillips. New York Giants' Darius Slayton continues to defend Daniel Jones
The Daniel Jones era in New York may be over, but there's one Giants teammate who will surely miss him: Wide receiver Darius Slayton. The two came into the NFL together as Giants via the 2019 NFL draft, Jones as a top-10 pick and Slayton as a fifth-round pick. The pair hit it off immediately, with Slayton becoming Jones' favorite target. Advertisement In the duo's first five seasons together, Slayton led the club in receiving in four of them, and he hasn't forgotten the synergy and chemistry he had here with Jones. The Giants, however, had just one winning season with Jones under center and made the decision ot part ways with him last November. Slayton is not about to lay all of the blame for the Giants' woes at Jones' feet. There's plenty of blame to go around. "It was definitely not an ideal situation," Slayton said on the NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov podcast, via Big Blue View. "At the end of the day, he knows what the business is. I know what this business is. It's result-based. We weren't good enough the previous few years on offense. Typically, the tip of that spear is the quarterback." Jones is now in Indianapolis and is in a battle for the starting job there with Anthony Richardson. Slayton believes Jones still has a chance to be a top player. Advertisement "I think that he will be a successful quarterback in the league," Slayton told Meirov. "This league is largely about being in the right place at the right time." Jones not only had perforance issues to deal with as a Giant, he had to overcome muliple injuries. He missed a total of 22 games over his six seasons with the Giants with various injuries and ailments. The most serious of those were the season-ending ACL tear in 2023 and the two seperate neck injuries in whcih he pinched a nerve. Could the Giants have two 1,000-yard receivers this season?
The New York Giants' offense is aiming to be more explosive this season. Headlined by one of the NFL's best young playmakers, Malik Nabers could lead this offense to newfound success. With upgrades at quarterback and Naber soaking up the defense's attention, there could be room for a second thousand-yard receiver in the Giants' 2025 offense. Advertisement Malik Nabers is a superstar in the making Despite playing with arguably the worst quarterback room in the NFL last season, Nabers still managed to put up a ridiculous stat line. Credit: Julian Leshay Guadalupe/ / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images He totaled 109 receptions, 1,205 yards, and seven touchdowns with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, and Tim Boyle throwing him the football. Now, this season, with a competent quarterback room on the roster, Nabers should see his production increase. He could challenge the league's best for the most receiving yards — or maybe even the triple crown. The Giants' revamped quarterback room should spark the receiving corps Darius Slayton has never come close to topping 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. His career-best came in 2023 when he totaled 770 yards. But, like Nabers, Slayton has been held back by bad quarterback play. Credit: Julian Leshay Guadalupe/ / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images When Slayton got a chance to play with Tyrod Taylor down the final stretch of the 2023 season, he was electric. He scored a touchdown in three straight games to close out the year, averaging 80 yards per game over the final month of the season. Advertisement Russell Wilson is the Giants' new starting quarterback. He is also the best deep ball passer in the NFL. In 2024, Wilson was PFF's highest-graded passer on 20+ yard throws with a 97.3 Deep Passing Grade. Despite making only 11 starts, Wilson threw 50 passes 20+ yards downfield. He completed 27 of those attempts (54.0%) for 851 yards and eight touchdowns with two interceptions. Slayton has the speed to challenge defenses vertically. He has been the consummate professional for the Giants over the last six years. Now entering year seven with a new starting quarterback for the first time in his career, a breakthrough campaign could be on the horizon. Related Headlines

Giants Receiver Issues Vote of Confidence For QB Daniel Jones
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Upon electing for free agency this offseason, many expected Darius Slayton's time with the New York Giants to come to an end. Upon returning to the franchise on a new three-year deal, the veteran wide receiver opened up on the team's massive change. Slayton is one of the more tenured players on the Giants' roster, having been with the franchise since he was drafted in the fifth round in 2019. He's been a rather consistent piece in the offense, racking up at least 700 yards and two touchdowns in four of his first six seasons. For most of his pro career, Daniel Jones was the main guy throwing Slayton passes. That quickly changed midway through last season when the front office waived the former top-ten pick. Now, Slayton will be catching throws from a former Super Bowl-winning QB in Russell Wilson. During a recent interview with Ari Meirov, Slayton opened up on the Giants moving on from Jones. He admitted he was hurt by the news, as the two built a good relationship. That said, both are well aware the NFL is a business. We weren't good enough the previous few years on offense, and typically, the tip of that spear is the quarterback." While he might not be with the Giants anymore, Slayton is still confident that Jones can be a starting quarterback in the NFL. "It was what it was but I think he'll show who he is where he is now," he continued. "I think that he will be a successful quarterback in this league." Slayton used Sam Darnold's emergence last year as a prime example of fit being crucial to success. Now with the Indianapolis Colts, Jones will attempt to have a similar type of resurgence in 2025. The first step to doing so starts in training camp, where he'll be battling for the starting spot with former top-five pick Anthony Richardson. Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes expresses concern about the NFL's potential move to 18-game schedule
Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes would not be thrilled if the NFL were to add an 18th regular-season game to the schedule. Mahomes, 29, said that he wants to see the best players play in the biggest games, and the addition of another game could add more injuries. "You've seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games," Mahomes told CNBC. "If there were a way to get to 18 games, I'm not — I'm not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you got to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys' bodies." "I think that you'd have to find a way to have more bye weeks, more time spread out," Mahomes said. New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton disagreed with Mahomes, as he said an additional bye week would not be beneficial. "I don't know about two (bye weeks) because like getting yourself going after a bye is a hard thing," Slayton said in an appearance on "NFL Spotlight With Ari Meirov" in June. The NFL's data shows that there are more soft tissue injuries after a bye week, according to Ari Meirov. Part of the reason the NFL would want to add an 18th game is because it would slide the Super Bowl to President's Day weekend and allow fans to have the following day off work after the big game. Only time will tell whether a potential 18-game schedule will include multiple bye weeks. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
