Upon electing for free agency this offseason, many expected Darius Slayton's time with the New York Giants to come to an end. Upon returning to the franchise on a new three-year deal, the veteran wide receiver opened up on the team's massive change.
Slayton is one of the more tenured players on the Giants' roster, having been with the franchise since he was drafted in the fifth round in 2019. He's been a rather consistent piece in the offense, racking up at least 700 yards and two touchdowns in four of his first six seasons.
For most of his pro career, Daniel Jones was the main guy throwing Slayton passes. That quickly changed midway through last season when the front office waived the former top-ten pick. Now, Slayton will be catching throws from a former Super Bowl-winning QB in Russell Wilson.
During a recent interview with Ari Meirov, Slayton opened up on the Giants moving on from Jones. He admitted he was hurt by the news, as the two built a good relationship. That said, both are well aware the NFL is a business.

"It was definitely not ideal situation, as both a friend and a football player," Slayton said. "At the end of the day, he knows what this business is, I know what this business is, it's results-based. We weren't good enough the previous few years on offense, and typically, the tip of that spear is the quarterback."
While he might not be with the Giants anymore, Slayton is still confident that Jones can be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
"It was what it was but I think he'll show who he is where he is now," he continued. "I think that he will be a successful quarterback in this league."
Slayton used Sam Darnold's emergence last year as a prime example of fit being crucial to success. Now with the Indianapolis Colts, Jones will attempt to have a similar type of resurgence in 2025. The first step to doing so starts in training camp, where he'll be battling for the starting spot with former top-five pick Anthony Richardson.

As for Slayton, he'll look to continue being a key piece of the Giants' offense. Between being flanked by a talented young receiver in Malik Nabers and improved QB play, the pieces are in place for him to see an uptick in production this season.

The Chicago Bears have a handful of positional battles going on at training camp, including the battle for the second cornerback spot opposite Pro Bowler Jaylon Johnson. With Johnson nursing a leg injury suffered while training before camp, it's been a duo of Tyrique Stevenson and Nahshon Wright running with the starters (with Terell Smith rotating in with Stevenson at times). In Johnson's absence, Wright has been great. Stevenson hasn't been bad by any means, but Wright has been noticeable, which has created a competition between the two. Earlier this summer, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen proclaimed the job is 'completely up for grabs'. As camp progresses, that becomes increasingly believable. With that said, it's fair to root for Stevenson to win the job ahead of Week 1. If you believe that a football team has the best chance to win when they start their most talented players, then you'd like to see Stevenson out there in Week 1's tilt against the Minnesota Vikings. He's the second-most talented cornerback on the roster after Johnson. Did Stevenson make a bad mistake on the Hail Mary play against the Washington Commanders? Of course, he did. Matt Eberflus didn't do a good enough job holding him accountable for it either. As we've seen in training camp so far this summer, however, Ben Johnson is a different kind of head coach. He's holding everyone accountable, and that includes Stevenson. Don't think the new head coach or defensive coordinator doesn't know what happened last year. There is a higher standard going forward. It's good to see that Stevenson has to earn the trust of the new coaching staff. It's on him to take that job and run with it. As far as getting the best talent on the field for as many snaps as possible, Stevenson fits the mold better than anybody in the cornerback room, except for Jaylon Johnson. Josh Allen will not play in Bills preseason opener
Quarterback Josh Allen will not be on the field when the Bills open their preseason slate against the Giants. Head coach Sean McDermott told reporters in his Thursday press conference that Allen will rest on Saturday, with Mitchell Trubisky getting the start at quarterback. But other healthy starters will play in the contest. "Josh will not play this week. The starters, the ones, will play give or take one quarter, and then it'll flow from there," McDermott said. McDermott noted the benefit of this plan is to get Trubisky some time with the starters, as that's the group he would be playing with should something happen to Allen during the regular season. "That's huge," McDermott said. "Certainly want to be mindful of Josh, mindful of any starter — any of our players, we never want to see them get injured. The benefit of this, we hold Josh out, we keep him in a good spot. He's been playing extremely well in camp — you guys have been out here — and we get a chance to look at Mitch and some of the other quarterbacks. We'll gain live action with the ones, in this case, for Mitch." Allen has started every game for the Bills since the 2019 season. Trubisky appeared in nine games last season, mainly in mop-up work, though he did play the majority of the Week 18 matchup against the Patriots. He completed 19-of-26 passes for 179 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in 2024. Kickoff for the matchup between Buffalo and New York is set for 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.
