Jogger hit by 4WD succumbs to injuries

TAWAU: A 43-year-old woman who was seriously injured after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle while jogging with friends at Mile 9, Jalan Apas on August 9, has died from her injuries. After battling for her life for nine days, Darna Tajudin succumbed to her injuries, a tragic end to what began as a routine evening jog with friends. Acting Tawau District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said Darna, who had been receiving treatment at the Tawau Hospital, was pronounced dead by medical staff at about 8.37am on Sunday. 'At this time, police cannot determine the exact cause of death as we are awaiting the autopsy results,' he said. The case classification has been upgraded from Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence causing injury, to Section 44(1)(b) for driving under the influence of alcohol above the prescribed limit resulting in death. 'If convicted, the penalty ranges from 10 to 15 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than RM50,000 and not exceeding RM100,000,' he said. The accident happened at about 9.10pm when Darna was jogging with friends from Bandar Sri Indah at Mile 10, Jalan Apas toward the T2 area at Mile 2. A 57-year-old male driver, suspected of being intoxicated, first collided with a multi-purpose vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man who was traveling from Taman Ria 11 to Tawau Airport. The collision caused the four-wheel-drive vehicle to veer out of control onto the left shoulder of the road, where it crashed into Darna and her jogging companions. Woman hit by suspected drunk driver while jogging in Tawau dies after nine days in hospital
TAWAU, Aug 17 — A 43-year-old woman who was critically injured after being struck by a four-wheel-drive vehicle while jogging with friends along Batu 9 Jalan Apas on August 9 has died. The victim, Darna Tajudin, had been receiving treatment at Tawau Hospital before being pronounced dead in the ward at 8.37am today. Police confirmed that a post-mortem will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death as part of the ongoing investigation. The case, which was initially investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, has now been reclassified under Section 44(1)(b) for driving under the influence of alcohol above the prescribed limit, resulting in death. The collision occurred when a 57-year-old driver suspected of being intoxicated crashed into another vehicle before losing control and hitting the victim, who later succumbed to her injuries after nine days in hospital. — Daily Express

Jogger hit by suspected drunk driver dies in ICU
TAWAU: A woman who was critically injured after being struck while jogging died after a week in Tawau Hospital's intensive care unit. The victim, 41-year-old Darna Tajudin, was pronounced dead at 8.37am today after being declared brain dead. The accident occurred at 7.55pm on Aug 10 at Batu 9, Jalan Apas, when the victim and several friends were jogging from Bandar Sri Indah towards T2 Jalan Apas. On the same day, Tawau district police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said initial investigations revealed the accident happened when a 57-year-old Toyota Hilux driver rear-ended a Perodua Alza driven by a 39-year-old man. "As a result of the collision, the Toyota Hilux driver lost control of his vehicle, which veered onto the left roadside and rammed into the victim." The case is now being investigated under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses the offense of causing death or injury while driving under the influence of alcohol. Darna's younger sibling, Yusmi Tajudin, 39, said she left behind five children aged between 9 and 18. "We have yet to confirm when the burial will take place, as we are still awaiting the next procedures since the case is under police investigation."
