Steelers Get Good News on Joey Porter Jr.
UNITY TWP., Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is in full pads after missing the last three practices with a hand injury. The Steelers have been dealing with a number of injuries at the cornerback position, with Porter, Cory Trice (hamstring) and Donte Kent (ankle/foot) all missing the team's practice session on Sunday. Trice and Kent remain out. The Steelers signed former Buffalo Bills and Miami Hurricanes defensive back Daryl Porter Jr., following a successful workout. The workout also included former first-round pick C.J. Henderson. Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was the most penalized cornerback in the league, but having a Super Bowl champion to learn from in Darius Slay could be beneficial. Slay revealed in an interview with Mina Kimes of ESPN this offseason that he wants to not only help fix Porter's issues with penalties, but also improve his game in the interceptions department. Porter has only two INTs through his first two seasons. 'They say he can't catch, but we're gonna fix that,' Slay told Kimes. 'We're gonna catch the rock this year.' Slay has recorded 28 interceptions in his decorated career. The 34-year-old cornerback is a Super Bowl champion, eight-time Pro Bowler and has a first-team All-Pro selection (2017) under his belt. Slay hopes to give Porter and the Steelers young cornerbacks he same wisdom that he passed down to Philadelphia Eagles rookie cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell last season during their Super Bowl title run. 'I have a good resume with younger guys, trying to help build them,' Slay said. 'That's my job. I'm just here to help him, do everything I can to make sure he succeeds at what he does. And try to get him to be one of the best in the game.' Porter will also have All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey as a mentor in 2025. Both Slay and Ramsey are two very different cornerbacks from a stylistic standpoint, further proving that there's more than one way to get the job done effectively. But there are elements from each of their games that Porter would be wise to try and emulate. Porter revealed that the addition of Slay will have lasting effects on him past just the 2025 season. 'I told him I used to watch his tape growing up,' Porter said. 'I know a lot of guys don't like when I say that because they feel old, but he's been in this league for a long time. He's a great vet. I've had some great vets before him. I'm just happy to have him in the building and keep learning from him.' Alan Saunders provided reporting from St. Vincent College. Steelers' New Arrival Given Minkah Fitzpatrick's Jersey Number
UNITY TWP, Pa. — There's a new No. 39 at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp practice. The jersey, worn by Minkah Fitzpatrick for almost all of the past six seasons, now belongs to undrafted rookie cornerback Daryl Porter Jr., who was signed on Monday. Porter is the latest in a line of newly arrived Steelers to pull on jersey numbers left behind by last season's impact-makers. Tailback Kenneth Gainwell inherited George Pickens' No. 14, punter Corliss Waitman landed on Russell Wilson's No. 3 after Aaron Rodgers took No. 8 and veteran safety Juan Thornill is the latest to wear No. 22, after Najee Harris. Porter, 23, initially signed with the Buffalo Bills after not hearing his name called during the 2025 NFL Draft. He was brought in as starter Joey Porter Jr. and backup Cory Trice dealt with ailments. Joey Porter Jr. returned to practice on Tuesday. Much like Joey Porter Jr., Daryl Porter Jr.'s father spent time with the Steelers, but is recognized more for his three-year stint with the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000. Daryl Porter Jr. played collegiately at West Virginia and Miami. He played in 30 games for the Hurricanes, posting 62 tackles, two tackles for loss and seven passes defended. Other notable Steelers to pull on No. 39 include punter Bobby Walden (1968-77), safety Darren Perry (1992-98) and running back Willie Parker (2004-09). Last month, Fitzpatrick was shipped to the Miami Dolphins, with whom he began his career with in 2018, in exchange for fellow three-time Associated Press first-team All-Pro Jalen Ramsey and versatile tight end Jonnu Smith. Steelers Sign former West Virginia DB with NFL Bloodlines
The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Miami and West Virginia cornerback Daryl Porter Jr., according to a report by Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV. Porter, 23, originally signed with the Buffalo Bills as a UDFA after going undrafted at the 2025 NFL Draft. He was waived by the Bills on July 28. The Steelers have been dealing with a number of injuries at the cornerback position, with Joey Porter Jr., Cory Trice and Donte Kent all missing the team's practice session on Sunday. Porter is the the son of former NFL safety Daryl Porter Sr., who had two stints with the Steelers amid a six-year NFL career. Porter Sr., who was the Steelers' sixth-round pick out of Boston College in the 1997 NFL Draft, never played in a regular-season game with the team and was best-known for his three-year run with the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000. Porter Jr. committed to West Virginia out of American Heritage High School in Florida in the Class of 2020 and spent two seasons with the Mountaineers, where he played in 19 games and recorded one interception, six passes defended and 46 tackles, one for a loss. He transferred to Miami for the 2022 season, and appears in 30 games with the Hurricanes, racking up 62 tackles, two tackles for loss and seven passes defended. The 5-foot-11, 184-pound Porter did not test well in the pre-draft process, with a 4.58-second 40-yard dash, 4.53-second shuttle, 7.15-second three-cone drill and 36-inch vertical giving him a 2.10 Relative Athletic Score out of 10. The Steelers have not announced a corresponding transaction to make room for Porter on their 90-man offseason roster, which is full. Steelers sign DB Daryl Porter Jr.
The Steelers signed the son of one of their former draft choices on Tuesday. The team announced the addition of defensive back Daryl Porter Jr. to the roster. They waived tight end Kevin Foelsch in a corresponding move. Porter signed with the Bills after going undrafted out of Miami this year. He was waived by the Bills ahead of training camp, however, and will now try to do something that his father wasn't able to do. The Steelers drafted safety Daryl Porter Sr. in the sixth round in 1997, but he never appeared in a regular season game for the team. He did go on to play 55 games for the Lions, Bills, and Titans.
