Weiss addresses Slovan controversy ahead of potential Celtic tie
The Slovakian side lost 1-0 in the third qualifying round first leg tie against Kairat Almaty on Wednesday as Dastan Satpaev fired home a 90th-minute penalty. The winners of the tie face Celtic in the play-off round of the Champions League later this month. Veteran Slovan Bratislava boss Weiss confronted the referee and fourth official and stormed onto the pitch over the late penalty. He had to be dragged away as he fumed over the loss to the club he used to manage. Weiss Jr, who previously played for Rangers, has addressed his father's actions as he revealed the manager regrets his actions. He won't be in the dugout for the second leg after the red card. Read more: Weiss, 35, said: "He's a very emotional man and this match meant even more to him because he used to manage Kairat Almaty. "Just as I would do anything for this team, so would he. "He regrets what happened now, but there's nothing he can do about it now. "Unfortunately, we will miss him in the home leg, but with the quality on our side and with our excellent fans, we will beat them at a sold-out stadium and win through to play against Celtic." Slovan Bratislava lost 5-1 to Celtic in the league phase of the Champions League last season. Celtic will be at home for the first leg of the Champions League play-off round before travelling for the away leg against either Kairat or Slovan Bratislava. That game will be played on Wednesday, August 20, with an 8pm kick-off, as per UEFA's website. The return leg - wherever that will be - is set to take place six days later on Tuesday, August 26, also with an 8pm kick-off.

Celtic see Champions League play-off opponents showdown settled by late penalty drama but tie still in the balance
Hoops await the winners in the final qualification hurdle to get into Europe's premier competition Celtic could be heading to Kazakhstan in the Champions League play-off after Kairat Almaty bagged a dramatic winner in their third round qualifier with Slovan Bratislava. Kazakh outfit Kairat welcomed the Slovakian side to Central Stadium and eventually found the breakthrough against the visitors, who went down to 10 men through Rahim Ibrahim's red card with 25 minutes still left on the clock. The decisive goal arrived in injury time, with Kairat's Dastan Satpaev netting from the penalty spot. Satpaev then thought he had nabbed a crucial second only for VAR to overturn his effort for offside. Former Hoops transfer target David Strelec lined up for the away team but was replaced in the second half along with one-time Rangers ' loanee Vladimir Weiss. The Almaty side dominated proceedings with 17 shots on goal but now they still have work to do if they want to set up a showdown with Celtic. Brendan Rodgers ' side await the victors in the final qualification hurdle later this month, with the first leg taking place at Parkhead on August 20. The return fixture away from home then comes six days later, with the loser over two legs dropping into the revamped group stage of the Europa League. The Hoops have opted not to postpone a Premiership match in-between the crunch play-off clash. Celtic are scheduled to face Livingston at home on August 23 but a new policy put forward by the SPFL to help Scottish clubs bidding to qualify for Europe would have allowed them to request a postponement the league fixture. However, Celts have decided against the move, with Rodgers confident his squad can come through the week with flying colours. Chelsea-bound Kazakh wonderkid, 16, sends Celtic warning as shock 90th minute spot kick hints at gruelling Almaty trip
DASTAN SATPAEV is only 16 years old and is already regarded as the biggest footballing prospect to come out of Kazakhstan. It was all too much for the Slovaks to take with midfielder Rahim Ibrahim send off just after the hour mark, then the Slovakian outfit's manager Vladimir Weiss sent off for protesting in the dying stages. The manager - son of Rangers star Vladimir, who also played in the match - was infuriated about the penalty award, given for a shirt tug in a crowded box by Danylo Ignatenko. But things could even have been worse for the Bratislava - with more magic from Satpaev leading to a disallowed 'goal' in the 96th minute, eventually ruled out for a line ball offside after a lengthy VAR intervention.
