'There are multi-layered causes' behind increase in shoplifting in East Lothian

Speaking at the meeting of the board yesterday morning, Chief Inspector Leathes said that while reports of shoplifting had fallen slightly over the last year they remained 'prolific'. The number of incidents reported was nearly 63% higher than the five year average with nearly 3,500 complaints. The chief inspector said: 'Shoplifting is on the increase and there are multi layered causes behind that, which we can tackle. 'We can look at why individuals are shoplifting, Whether it is down to their own addiction, whether it is down to simply not being able to put food on the table or whether it is down to just not being taught how to behave in a shop. The police chief said a specialist unit had been established to tackle retail crime nationally with £3m funding from the Scottish Government working with a number of agencies.

Sneaky East Lothian man 'slips item in his bag' as CCTV catches him out

More info An East Lothian man was seen 'putting an item into his bag' on CCTV footage. The individual was in Day Today in Tranent at around 12..25pm on Wednesday, June 11. The clip appears to show him picking up an item from the shelves and putting it into an Asda bag. He then continues to make his way round the shop before leaving. Owners at Day Today are now appealing for help from the public. Sharing the footage online, owners said: "To our valued customers and the wider community. "We are seeking your assistance in identifying an individual who was involved in a theft incident at our shop on 11/06/2025. If you recognize this individual or have any information regarding the incident, please contact us. It's not the first time Edinburgh Live has reported on this shop being targeted by thieves. In February, a group of youths were caught attempting to steal vapes.
