Dilip Joshi AKA TMKOC's Jethalal Says He Misses 'Dayaben' Disha Vakani: 'Our Chemistry…'

Last Updated: Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah turns 17 as cast gets emotional about Disha Vakani AKA Dayaben's absence. Seventeen years on air is no small feat, and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah hit that milestone with a special celebration in Mumbai. While the cast and crew gathered to mark the occasion, all eyes and emotions turned toward one major absence – Disha Vakani, who famously played Dayaben. And yes, the wait for her return still continues. During the event, TMKOC producer Asit Kumar Modi shared an update on the long-running casting delay and the hunt to find someone who can match Disha's iconic presence. 'Of course, Dayaben not being there is a huge challenge. Disha set a benchmark for that character with the way she has performed. Finding someone like her is very difficult. I don't know what is God's will, but I hope to find someone soon and bring Dayaben back," he said. He added, 'I sincerely wish for Disha only to return, but due to personal reasons, she cannot. But even without Daya, my team has supported me, especially Jethalal and Baapuji. The set was always very lively with Daya, and they kept that belief going for 8 years. I have been telling the audience time and again that we will bring Daya, but issues keep arising. Finding a good replacement is also tough because a very strong image of hers is etched in people's minds. But I shall soon overcome this challenge with your love and support." The show hasn't seen Disha on-screen since 2017, when she took maternity leave and never officially returned. Her absence was felt deeply during the celebration. Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal, also had warm memories of working with Disha, especially their chemistry that clicked from the very beginning. 'We have worked from 2008 to 2017, so I definitely miss her. It was a long time, and we did some iconic scenes together. Both of us are from a theatre background, so our chemistry was quite good since day one. Personally, as a co-actor, I definitely miss her a lot, because the scenes were very enjoyable with her." For now, the show keeps going without its beloved Dayaben, but the team—and the fans—clearly haven't stopped hoping. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 08:01 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The show's maker, Asit Kumarr Modi, has often confirmed that the hunt for a new Dayaben is underway. Just a few months ago, Asit Modi exclusively confirmed to News18 Showsha that Disha would not be returning to the popular sitcom. 'It is difficult for her now (to return to the show). For women, life changes after marriage. Working with small children and managing the house is really a bit difficult for them. But I am still positive. I feel somewhere that god will do a miracle and she will return. If she comes, then it will be a good thing. If for some reason she does not come, then I will have to bring another Dayaben for the show," the Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah creator said. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah's Disha Vakani aka Dayaben is doing THIS after leaving the show

Actress Disha Vakani, who became a household name with her iconic role as Dayaben in Sony SAB TV's popular show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah , is now completely away from the limelight. There was a time when she was in the headlines almost every day. Disha joined the show when it first aired in 2008, and in a short time, her character of Daya Bhabhi became beloved in every household. After portraying the role for nearly nine years, she eventually said goodbye to the show. Disha Vakani is now busy with her personal life. She went on maternity leave in 2017, and since then, she has not returned to the show. She has two children (a daughter and a son), whose upbringing takes up all her time. Why did Disha Vakani leave Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah? Disha Vakani married Mumbai-based chartered accountant Mayur Padia in 2015. Mayur Padia has nothing to do with the acting and film-TV industry, and he likes to stay away from the camera in his personal life. On 27 November 2017, the couple became parents to a baby girl, and in May 2022, they welcomed a boy. Disha wanted to return to the show, but she had some conditions of her own. But the show's producer, Asit Kumarr Modi, refused to accept them. He said that the rules that apply to others will apply to her as well. She will not get any special treatment. There were several discussions that she would return to the show, but now it seems unlikely that she will return. She is living a happy life with her family. Fans miss her a lot in this show. People loved Disha Wakani's acting and her way of speaking. Her pairing with Jethalal i.e. actor Dilip Joshi in the show, was loved by the people. Asit Modi on Disha Vakani's return in TMKOC In an interview, the producer of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Asit Modi also revealed whether Disha Vakani will reprise her role or not. Speaking to Screen , Modi said, 'People have been eagerly waiting for Daya Bhabhi, and I will finalise her soon. People say that without Dayaben, they don't enjoy the show as much, and I agree. We, as a team, are trying to fill Daya Bhabhi's absence as much as we can. But she will return soon.' Asit said that Disha is like his sister and would want to see her coming back as Dayaben. He continued, 'We can only pray that Disha Vakani returns as the character. She is like my sister, and she has some family duties to fulfill, which is why it might be difficult for her to return. We miss her even today. She was very sincere and caring towards her co-stars and the team. We hope to find someone just like that.' Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is one of the longest-running television series in India. The series premiered on 28 July 2008 on Sony SAB and is also digitally available on SonyLIV.
