Daytona Beach Man Who Fatally Shot Wife After She Found Out About His Affair Through Apple Watch, Convicted
A Daytona Beach man who killed his wife in front of her parents on the day she found out he was cheating on her, has been convicted of her murder. A jury deliberated for 17 minutes before finding 37-year-old Shantell Adkins guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault, the State Attorney's Office for the Seventh Judicial Circuit announced June 4. Shawntai Found Out Shantell was Cheating on Her Through Messages on His Apple Watch The mother of the victim, 34-year-old Shawntai Adkins, said during a deposition that her daughter had found out earlier the day she was killed that her husband had been cheating on her. She learned of his infidelity through messages on his Apple Watch, and she told her mom she was done and was going to divorce him, her mother recounted during the deposition. On Oct. 19, 2023, Shawntai accused Shantell of taking her motorcycle while he was intoxicated, days after he was admitted to a medical facility for alcohol abuse treatment under the Marchman Act, according to court documents filed in Volusia County. Shawntai's mom said her daughter called and asked her parents to come over because her husband had taken her bike and wouldn't tell her where it was. The parents went over to the Daytona Beach home and were asking their son-in-law where the motorcycle was, then he got angry and got out his rifle, deputies said. Shantell Fired His Rifle, Striking Shantell in the Neck The parents and the wife started leaving, then Shantell fired off a shot, killing his wife, the Daytona Beach Police Department said in an arrest affidavit. The parents started running, and the father broke his leg while trying to jump over a fence, according to prosecutors and police. Shantell also shot himself in the shoulder, and he was hospitalized while his wife died at the scene, police said. His defense tried to prevent prosecutors from using his alcohol use or alleged infidelity in court, but a judge denied the motions, saying prosecutors could use those details to establish motive for the woman's death. Shantell is expected to be sentenced to mandatory life in prison June 23.

Volusia County Schools deploys new gun detection AI
In an effort to improve school safety, Volusia County Schools is deploying a new artificial intelligence platform for detecting guns. The new software is called ZeroEyes. It will work by layering onto the schools' current digital cameras. If a gun is detected, the video will be fed back to the company's operations center, which is staffed by military and law enforcement veterans. The county says this will add another critical layer of protection. 'Our goal is to be a trailblazer for school safety in Florida,' Volusia County Schools Superintendent Carmen Balgobin said in a news release. 'After seeing the Daytona Beach Police Department's success with ZeroEyes, we conducted a thorough evaluation of the technology. We began piloting it in a few of our schools and quickly recognized the critical value it provides. We want our students to focus on learning, building friendships, and preparing for their futures, rather than worrying about their safety.' Toddler killed while chasing after family dog into oncoming traffic
A toddler was killed in south Florida Wednesday night after he chased his family dog into oncoming traffic - and was subsequently struck by two different vehicles. The unidentified one-year-old boy had walked out of his home on North Halifax Avenue in Daytona Beach to follow the family dog - who had somehow managed to escape, Bill Rhodes, the director of operations for the Daytona Beach Police Department said at a news conference on Thursday, WESH reports. He then entered oncoming traffic and was struck by a 2003 Honda CR-V. The impact of the collision then sent the toddler into the southbound lanes of the busy avenue, where he was then struck by a 2012 Chevy Silverado. Police then responded to the scene at around 8.21pm and found the boy with severe injuries in what Rhodes referred to as a 'traumatic and chaotic scene.' From there, he was transported by Volusia County EMS to Halifax Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead an hour later, Rhodes announced. Officers do not believe speed was a factor in the young boy's death - and are still considering whether to bring charges against anyone in the case. 'At this point, it just seems to be a very tragic accident that we are having to work though here and help the family get through,' Rhodes told reporters, noting that both of the boy's parents and both drivers are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. 'Just this whole mix of things came together in a really tragic turn of events last night,' he added, according to Fox 35. Rhodes went on to say he does not want to hold anyone accountable for 'what they did or didn't do. 'Those of us that are parents, we know that little kids are quick and fast,' he said. 'I guarantee you that they [the boy's parents] are dealing with major trauma today,' he added.
