Police say man buys beer for DeLand bar patron, shoots at him after demanding payback

A shooting over beer money occurred early Saturday outside a DeLand bar where three weeks ago a man was shot and killed, police said. In the latest incident, police said the suspected shooter, Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, 55, shot at a man outside McCabe's Bar at 225 N. Amelia Ave. at 2:05 a.m. after he was not reimbursed $5 for a beer. Police said Gilbert did not know the victim and met him at the bar. Witnesses reported Gilbert bought a beer for the victim. At closing time, he confronted the victim outside the bar and demanded reimbursement for the drink, police said. An argument ensued in the parking lot, and during the exchange, Gilbert pulled a gun from his satchel and fired at the victim while he stood three feet away, investigators said. The victim ducked to avoid getting shot and the bullet struck an exterior cooler and entered a wall, police said. A single 9mm shell casing was recovered at the scene. On May 3, DeLand police said Keshod Harris, 32, of DeLand, was struck multiple times in the chest when Avantae Williams, 24, a graduate of DeLand High School and a former college football player with the Miami Hurricanes and Maryland Terrapins, allegedly shot Harris because of jealousy over a woman. Harris was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. On Saturday, DeLand police said they were looking for Gilbert, who was identified by the victim and staff at the bar. He was seen in a video surveillance recording leaving in a tan 1999 Nissan Quest van, police said. Anyone with information on Gilbert's whereabouts is asked not to approach him, and contact the DeLand Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 800-222- TIPS (8477). Video depicts man outside McCabe's Bar shooting at man and missing from 3 feet away

Two shootings less than a month apart at McCabe's Bar near downtown DeLand has put the establishment in violation of its lease and it will have to change hours of operation, said police Chief Jason Umberger. Umberger made the statement Tuesday morning during a press conference while giving an update on the latest shooting that occurred outside the bar early Saturday. There were no injuries. The Saturday shooting follows a fatal one that occurred on May 3, when a customer was shot dead inside the bar. "The individuals that own McCabe's Bar have already been served with a notice of violation of lease," Umberger said. "And they are going to be required to change their hours of operation." The Facebook page for McCabe's Bar shows the bar opens Mondays to Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 12 a.m. The bar was open on Tuesday, and an employee who answered the phone said she would relay a reporter's request for comment. It was not immediately known Tuesday what the new hours of business were. Umberger said he also suggested to the bar operators to hire security and screen patrons coming into the bar for firearms in the foreseeable future. "Our primary concern is public safety," Umberger said. "People are concerned about the two incidents at McCabe's Bar. We are, too. We take it very seriously." On Saturday at 2:05 a.m., DeLand police said they responded to a shooting call at McCabe's. Investigators learned that regular patron, Calvin Gilbert, 55, had been drinking with a man in the bar. He bought the man he just met at the bar a beer, police said. At closing time, Gilbert got into an argument with the man and demanded reimbursement. During the confrontation, Gilbert went to his car, retrieved a satchel from which he pulled out a gun and fired it three feet away from the victim's head, Umberger said. In surveillance video released Tuesday, Gilbert can be seen first approaching the victim outside McCabe's Bar, exchanging words and tossing a drink in the victim's face. Gilbert is later seen returning with a gun in his right hand and pointing to the victim with a raised left arm. He walks past two other persons, approaches the victim, raises the gun, and fires. The victim can be seen ducking sideways to avoid getting shot in the head. Gilbert was arrested Sunday in a traffic stop and charged with attempted murder and the use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. Three weeks before Saturday's shooting, on May 3, police said Keshod Harris, 32, of DeLand, was struck multiple times in the chest when Avantae Williams, 24, a graduate of DeLand High School and a former college football player with the Miami Hurricanes and Maryland Terrapins, allegedly shot Harris who was jealous over a woman. Umberger said the owners of McCabe's Bar have been cooperative and believed they will comply with the new requirements to stay in business. Umberger said they have also asked the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation to review McCabe's Bar's liquor license. Umberger concluded that people who engage in gun violence will be held accountable. "Individuals who choose to unlawfully carry and use these firearms are ultimately responsible for their actions. We will arrest them and bring them to justice," the chief said. This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: DeLand bar shootings puts business under scrutiny

Former Miami, Maryland S Avantae Williams charged with second-degree murder

Former Miami, Maryland S Avantae Williams charged with second-degree murder Show Caption Hide Caption Former Miami Hurricane, Maryland Terrapin charged with Florida murder Avantae Williams, who played football at Miami and Maryland, was in a Volusia County Jail after DeLand police charged him in a fatal May 3 shooting. Former Miami and Maryland football player Avantae Williams has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection to a shooting on Saturday, according to a DeLand Police Department news release. Williams — a former top-50 ranked prospect out of DeLand High School in DeLand, Florida — turned himself in to police at a lawyer's office on Monday with no incident, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. As of Wednesday morning, Williams was in the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond, per the News-Journal. Per the DeLand news release, officers responded to a shooting around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday at a bar in DeLand, Florida. Witnesses told investigators a fistfight broke out between several people in the bar, before one of the men pulled out a firearm and started shooting, according to the news release. Police said Keshod Harris, 32, was shot and killed. A bartender was also injured in the shooting, sustaining gunshot wounds to both hands. They were treated with non-life-threatening injuries. As reported by the News-Journal, Harris got into an argument at 1:25 a.m. at McCabe's Bar — less than 20 minutes from Stetson University in Florida — with Damian "D" Ramsey, who was there with Williams and another man, per an affidavit. Harris, Williams and Ramsey had previously left a celebration at the Chisholm Community Center after Harris had arrived there and argued with his girlfriend. The News-Journal reported that Ramsey had previously tried "to be with her romantically," before Saturday's shooting. Per the News-Journal, Harris and Williams began fighting, with Harris punching Williams in the jaw. Ramsey then stood up and punched Harris in the back of the head. Williams pushed Harris away, grabbed a gun from his right pocket and fired into Harris' left rib cage. Williams reportedly ran past Harris, who was motionless on the ground, and shot him in the back before running out of the bar with Ramsey. Harris was pronounced dead after he was transported to AdventHealth DeLand. The News-Journal reported that an autopsy of Harris revealed he had been shot seven times, with six bullets remaining in his body. Williams fled the scene with Ramsey. The News-Journal reports a witness identified Williams from a photo lineup, and that police had picked up an iPhone that Williams set down when he fought Harris. The News-Journal also notes that police used a license plate detection system to identify the vehicle in which Williams left the scene. It was determined to belong to an "associate" of Williams, and was seized as evidence. Williams was the No. 45-ranked player and No. 2 safety of the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings. He had 30 total tackles in his career across two seasons at Miami and another at Maryland. He last played in 2023.
