Amorim's blunt approach will benefit club: De Ligt

agencies Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has praised Ruben Amorim's blunt approach and feels it will benefit the club in the long run. While Amorim has found winning matches difficult since he arrived from Sporting in November, he has delivered some of the most withering statements about United during his short time in charge. After the 3-1 home defeat by Brighton in January he claimed his side were 'probably the worst in Manchester United history'. In the aftermath of the Europa League final defeat by Tottenham, he said he would walk away without talking about compensation should either the club's hierarchy or the fans feel it was the best way forward. On the recent post-season tour of Asia, Amorim accused his players of being 'chokers' after their shock defeat by a South-East Asia select XI. De Ligt, who skippered Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, feels that, because of his nationality and the Dutch reputation for blunt speaking, Amorim's words are positive. 'I'm from Holland so I like it,' he said. 'I can understand the media are in shock because normally this doesn't happen. 'But I think you can also be really happy that finally someone speaks out, says what he thinks and speaks the truth. 'I really appreciate him in our conversations personally. It gives me a feeling I can trust him and he can trust me.' United are reeling after their worst season domestically since the 1973-74 campaign. There was no backdoor entry to the Champions League thanks to the Tottenham reverse, meaning United miss out on European football and the finances that come with it next season for only the second time since English clubs returned to Uefa competition in 1990. After delivering just seven Premier League victories after arriving at the club in November, Amorim will start the new campaign under intense pressure. However, De Ligt feels the work Amorim is doing around the first-team group will pay dividends. 'I've experienced many managers and he's one of the most easy to talk to as a player,' he said. 'He's really into details. Before signing new players, first he's looking at the culture, what needs to change and what can be improved to become a better football club. From next season we will see more of that. 'I think he wants to build a team of players who are together, fighting for each other and making the most out of what they have. 'Maybe before, you had the best players, but you're not a team.'

Three players could miss Man United vs Aston Villa as Ruben Amorim looks for Europa League response

Manchester United will put a book end on a forgettable 2024/25 season this afternoon when they welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford. While Villa are looking for a win that could secure them Champions League football next season, United are looking to avoid finishing in 17th place in the Premier League table. United just want this season to end and Ruben Amorim will be keen to get a full pre-season with his players as they look to right the wrongs of this season next term. Injury: foot The Frenchman was forced off in United's 2-0 defeat to West Ham United a fortnight ago after going down not long after half-time clutching his left foot. He returned to face Tottenham in the Europa League final but Amorim has now hinted he won't be risked against Villa. "There are some situations, like Leny," Amorim said. "We have to be careful. We had that in the last [home] game before the final, I think it was West Ham, on his foot. "We're going to take care of some situations so as not to compromise next season. The rest, we want to win the game so we are going to put a squad together." Possible return date: Unknown Injury: knee De Ligt did not train alongside the rest of his teammates on Tuesday morning and subsequently missed the clash with Spurs. He has missed the last four games after being forced off against Brentford earlier this month with a knee injury. He trained alone with a fitness coach on Tuesday morning and althought he travelled to Spain to support his teammates, he will not be available to face Villa. Possible return date: Unknown. Injury: anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) Martinez is a long-term absentee after rupturing his ACL in United's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford at the start of February. He soon underwent successful surgery and is well underway with his recovery. United have not put a specific timeframe on how long he will be out for, but he will not feature again this side of the summer. ACL injuries usually take around six months to fully recover from. Possible return date: August.

Manchester United: Ruben Amorim provides Matthijs de Ligt update after fresh injury blow

Ruben Amorim admitted he is 'really concerned' as Manchester United face a nervous wait over the fitness of Matthijs de Ligt. The United boss made eight changes as his side were beaten 4-3 by Brentford, with the match coming in the middle of the Europa League semi-final tie against Athletic Bilbao. De Ligt did start in defence, having made his return from injury in the first leg in Bilbao on Thursday, but he was forced off in the first-half after he lunged to close down Yoanne Wissa. The centre-back went straight down and signalled to the bench that he needed to come off, as Brentford played on and scored their second goal through Kevin Schade. De Ligt was immediately replaced as Harry Maguire came on, and Luke Shaw then came off at half-time as Amorim looked to avoid further injury concerns. Asked for an update on De Ligt after the match, Amorim said: 'I don't know so I'm really concerned - not about Thursday. 'We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect and have players for Thursday, but I'm more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season.' United sit 15th in the table after their latest Premier League defeat in what has been a miserable season on the domestic front. They are, though, heaving favourites to reach the Europa League final after a 3-0 win in Spain last week, and they could well end up playing Tottenham in an all-English showdown for the trophy. The winner of the competition will earn a place in the Champions League and Amorim insisted he is seeing signs his side can do so, despite a run of two wins in 12 league matches. "I have no doubt that we are playing better and we are understanding the way we play,' he said. 'Even in this context. So we have to take all the heat, in this moment we are losing games in the Premier League. 'We are fighting for the Europa League and we need to accept that, to think about Thursday is the most important game for us."
