PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The number of live births in Malaysia fell by 7.1 per cent to 93,435 in the second quarter of 2025, compared to 100,558 during the corresponding period last year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) Demographic Statistics report released today. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said male babies continued to outnumber females, with 48,444 births compared to 44,991, resulting in a sex ratio of 108 males for every 100 females. 'On average, one baby was born every minute, 43 babies every hour and 1,027 babies each day in the second quarter of 2025,' he said in a statement today. He said Selangor recorded the highest number of live births at 17,605, while the Federal Territory of Labuan recorded the lowest with 274 births. "Mothers aged 30 to 39 years recorded the highest live births with 48,503 births, which is 51.9 per cent, followed by mothers aged 20 to 29 years (40.8 per cent), 40 years and over (5.6 per cent) and less than 20 years (1.6 per cent)," he said. Mohd Uzir said a total of 48,408 deaths were recorded in the second quarter of 2025, a decrease of 3.0 per cent compared to 49,906 deaths in the second quarter of 2024. 'The number of deaths for males was 27,607, while females recorded 20,801 deaths, with the gender ratio for deaths being 133 males for every 100 females,' he said. Despite the decline in births, Malaysia's population was estimated at 34.2 million in the second quarter of 2025, up from 34.1 million in the same period of 2024, reflecting a slower growth of 0.5 per cent compared to 1.9 per cent previously. 'To achieve the targeted population growth of 1.1 per cent outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), Malaysia needs to add around 400,000 people annually,' Mohd Uzir said.

Deaths in Q2 2025 decreased by 3.0% to 48,408 compared to 49,906 in the same period last year. Male deaths stood at 27,607, while female deaths were 20,801, with a gender ratio of 133 males per 100 females. Malaysia's population grew marginally to 34.2 million in Q2 2025, up from 34.1 million in Q2 2024. Population growth slowed to 0.5%, down from 1.9% previously, falling short of the 1.1% target under the 13th Malaysia Plan. Citizens made up 90.1% of the population (30.9 million), while non-citizens accounted for 9.9% (3.4 million). Malaysia's live births drop 11.5pct in first quarter of 2025

PUTRAJAYA: The number of live births recorded a decline of 11.5 per cent to 93,500 in the first quarter of this year, compared to 105,613 in the corresponding period last year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) in its Demographic Statistics report. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said male births outnumbered female births, with 48,124 boys compared to 45,376 girls, bringing the sex ratio at birth to 106 males for every 100 females. "On average, one baby was born every minute, 43 babies per hour, and 1,039 babies daily during the first quarter of this year," he said in a statement today. Selangor recorded the highest number of live births at 18,254, while the Federal Territory of Labuan registered the lowest at 278. Uzir added that Malay births accounted for 68.8 per cent or 64,326 of the total live births during the first quarter of this year, up from 67.5 per cent in the first quarter of last year. Live births among the Chinese and Indian communities declined to 8.6 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively, compared to 9.6 per cent and 4.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2024. Uzir said in line with the drop in births this year, Malaysia's population was estimated at 34.2 million, compared to 33.9 million in the same period last year, with a slower growth rate of 0.9 per cent compared to 2.0 per cent. A total of 48,130 deaths were recorded in the first quarter of this year – a 2.0 per cent decrease from 49,117 deaths during the same period last year. Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths at 7,710, while the Federal Territory of Putrajaya registered the lowest at 84. On Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship this year, he said the department would chair the 15th Asean Community Statistical System Committee (ACSS15), aimed at strengthening statistical cooperation towards sustainable regional development. – BERNAMA
