In the binge-worthy Netflix drama, the actress, 47, plays socialite Margo Banks, the wife of Mulroney's wealthy oil tycoon Jed Banks. "I love Dermot so much," Akerman tells PEOPLE. "He's one of the loveliest humans. I mean, it's one of those things you go into it, and it's Dermot Mulroney, the heartthrob from My Best Friend's Wedding. He is just an incredible human being." While preparing to film, Akerman says she and Mulroney had "a lot of talks about what" Margo and Jed's complicated dynamic should look like onscreen. Throughout the series, viewers learn that Margo and Jed have an agreement where they can both sleep with other women, but Margo can't sleep with other men. "Margo and Jed are really interesting because at first you just think she's this trophy wife, and she's living the life," Akerman says. "But then, there are some scenes that get pretty complex where we see who is boss. She needs to make sure that she doesn't step on his toes because if she's out, then she's got nothing. It's life or death for her, this relationship with Jed." Akerman says a turning point for Margo in the series is when she tries to give Jed advice as he prepares to run for Texas governor, and he tells her he "doesn't want to listen to her feminist ideals." "You see her kind of shift and go, 'All right, I've overstepped my boundaries,'" Akerman says. "So, she does have boundaries, which is interesting. As long as she's playful and sexy, though, she can stay. So, she's become a master manipulator, and that was really fun to play with Dermot. He's just such a great acting partner. We had a really good time." Along with Mulroney, Akerman also built a deep friendship with her costar Brittany Snow, who plays the new girl in town, Sophie. "We ended up just loving each other so much," she says. "I was so thankful to have her as my partner in crime. We just felt really comfortable with each other." That sense of comfort helped put Akerman and Snow, 39, at ease whenever they had to film their characters' intimate scenes with each other. "They'd call cut, and we'd giggle and we'd be silly together after because you're just like, 'Oh my God, this is crazy,'" Akerman says. "It was just two girlfriends just doing the craziest things and having a blast together." Akerman says she "fell in love" with Margo "at first glance." When she first found out about the project, Akerman — who is married to actor Jack Donnelly and has a 12-year-old son, Sebastian, from a previous relationship — says she got to read "all eight episodes at once." "I got to see her whole arc and see where she begins and where she came from and where she ends up, and it's just such a meaty role," she says. "She's a master manipulator, she's vibrant, she's all these things that are fun to play. There was just so much to work with there. There was no way I could say no to it." Collider reported that the project is in 'very early development' (emphasis theirs) at Sony with Celine Song writing the script. This is huge news for fans of romance, yearning, and love triangles. The original film follows Julianne (Roberts) and her best friend, Michael (Mulroney), who promised each other they'd get married if they were still single by the time they turned 28. My Best Friend's Wedding 2: Celine Song to write sequel to hit comedy
A sequel to 1997 comedy My Best Friend's Wedding is in the works with Celine Song tapped to write the screenplay. According to Collider, the playwright turned writer-director, who broke out with Oscar-nominated drama Past Lives, has reportedly been hired by Sony as the film enters early development. News of the film recently circulated when one of its stars Dermot Mulroney teased that there is 'talk of a sequel' and that 'lawyers were talking' while promoting Netflix drama series The Hunting Wives. The original film starred Julia Roberts as a meddling food critic who decides to break up her best friend's wedding because of her feelings for him. It also starred Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett and made just under $300m at the global box office. Roberts has previously expressed interest in reprising the role. The actor was last seen on the big screen in romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise and this year will lead Luca Guadagnino's provocative thriller After the Hunt. She will then be seen in paranoid thriller Panic Carefully with Elizabeth Olsen. Song scored a best original screenplay Oscar nomination for Past Lives and recently followed it up with Materialists, a romantic comedy drama starring Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. The Guardian's Adrian Horton called it 'as beguiling as it is frustrating' in a three-star review. She has also been attached to a HBO series about the world of e-sports. The sequel joins a number of other follow-ups to films from the 1990s. This month saw both the release of underperforming slasher reboot I Know What You Did Last Summer in cinemas and Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix, next month sees the launch of comedy sequel Freakier Friday, a TV series extension of Clueless is currently in development at Peacock and a seventh Scream film hits the big screen next year.

Dermot Mulroney threw out the first pitch when the Fish hosted the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Mulroney, best known for his leading role in 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' is in town filming the movie 'November 1963,' also starring John Travolta. Mulroney isn't the only actor in recent years to have done the first pitch honours for the Goldeyes. Bob Odenkirk of 'Breaking Bad' and 'Better Call Saul' fame threw out the first pitch during a game in August 2024. Odenkirk was in town filming 'Nobody 2.'

Actor Dermot Mulroney has some exciting news for fans of his 1997 romantic comedy, My Best Friend's Wedding. People magazine reported that Mulroney said "there is talk of a sequel" while speaking to The New York Post in a July 25 interview. 'I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote," said Mulroney to the publication. In addition, the actor said he enjoyed filming My Best Friend's Wedding, which also stars Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz. 'Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream. I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys and I got the role. I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie," said Mulroney during the interview with the New York Post. Mulroney said he believed My Best Friends Wedding has held up over the years in a 2017 People magazine interview. "It's still a gorgeous film," said Mulroney. While speaking to People magazine, Mulroney said he enjoyed Roberts' company. He said while they don't usually "really talk about the movie," they often "cross paths" and have "remained friends." "We'll be with each other forever," said Mulroney, who played Michael O'Neal, a sports journalist planning to wed Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz) in the film. Roberts, who played Michael's best friend who harbors strong feelings for him, shared why she believed the movie has resonated with so many people over the years during a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly. The actress said she believed that fans appreciate the chemistry between the leads and the backdrop of Chicago. "We were outside and we were running around and all those things that we were pretending to do, we were doing, except for the isolated plotting and I just think that all that was very refreshing in a way," said Roberts during the interview.
