Charges laid in connection to fatal officer-involved shooting in Deschambault Lake
Two people have been charged in connection with an incident in Deschambault Lake, Sask. that led to a fatal officer-involved shooting on Friday. According to an update sent by Saskatchewan RCMP on Saturday afternoon, the incident happened around 8:41 a.m., on Aug. 8, after two Deschambault Lake RCMP officers encountered five individuals in a wooded area near the community. 'During the course of the encounter, a confrontation occurred between the officers and one of the five people, an adult male from Deschambault Lake. The two responding police officers discharged their firearms and the adult male was struck,' RCMP said in the release. RCMP say officers provided initial medical assistance to the man, but he died at the scene. His family has been notified. No police officers were physically injured. Officers then located a gun and several replica firearms, which were seized at the scene, and arrested four other people. Two were released without charges. Earl Ballantyne, 31, from Pelican Narrows has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon. Ballantyne was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a separate Deschambault Lake RCMP investigation. Sherri Custer, 20, from Deschambault Lake has been charged with breach of an undertaking related to the same investigation. Police say both suspects will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court via CCTV on Monday. RCMP say they notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Saskatchewan RCMP's Prince Albert, North Battleford and Saskatoon Provincial General Investigation Sections are investigating the initial call for service received by Deschambault Lake RCMP. According to RCMP, there will continue to be an increased police presence in Deschambault Lake in relation to these ongoing investigations. RCMP say they cannot provide any additional information at this time due to the ongoing SIRT investigation.

A confrontation occurred between the two officers and a man in the group, and the officers fired their guns, hitting the man, a Saturday news release from RCMP said. The officers tried to give the man medical assistance, but he died at the scene, RCMP say. Police say his family has been notified. They did not release his name or age. Neither of the officers were injured. Police say they seized a gun and several replica guns at the scene, and arrested the four other people. Two were later released without charges. A 31-year-old man from Pelican Narrows was charged with recklessly discharging a firearm. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a different investigation from July by Deschambault Lake RCMP. A 20-year-old woman from Deschambault Lake was also charged for breach of an undertaking, which police say was linked to the same July investigation. Both people will appear in court on August 11. The Serious Incident Response Team — the civilian-led provincial police watchdog agency, which is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in the province — has been notified of the incident by RCMP, and is investigating the circumstances of the shooting, Saturday's news release said.

Person shot dead by RCMP officer in Deschambault Lake, Sask.
A person is dead after being shot by an RCMP officer in Deschambault Lake, Sask., Friday morning. "This investigation is unfolding and we are unable to publicly identify or provide further details about the deceased individual at this time," Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release Friday. No officers were injured, the release continued. Police say several people were taken into custody in relation to the incident. The initial call for service to Deschambault Lake RCMP is currently being investigated, according to officials. Police say there will be increased police presence near Oskatuc Avenue in Deschambault Lake and are advising people to avoid the area as they continue to investigate. The incident is also being investigated by the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), the province's police oversight agency. Police say they will provide further information as they are able to and advise the public if they identify an imminent safety risk.

According to RCMP, the incident happened Friday morning, and several individuals have been taken into custody in relation to this ongoing investigation. Police say the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been informed and is investigating. 'This investigation is unfolding, and we are unable to publicly identify or provide further details about the deceased individual at this time. No police officers have been physically injured,' a news release sent by RCMP read. The Saskatchewan RCMP's Prince Albert general investigation section is investigating the initial call for service received by Deschambault Lake RCMP. Police ask people to avoid areas where officers are present and follow any police direction provided. The RCMP will provide an update when it becomes available. Deschambault Lake is located about 340 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert.
