Sask. police watchdog investigating after man dies in Deschambault Lake RCMP shooting

Saskatchewan's Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an RCMP shooting near Deschambault Lake that left one man dead.
Police say just before 9 a.m. Friday, two Deschambault RCMP officers encountered five people in a wooded area near Deschambault Lake, about 400 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
A confrontation occurred between the two officers and a man in the group, and the officers fired their guns, hitting the man, a Saturday news release from RCMP said.
The officers tried to give the man medical assistance, but he died at the scene, RCMP say.
Police say his family has been notified. They did not release his name or age.
Neither of the officers were injured.
Police say they seized a gun and several replica guns at the scene, and arrested the four other people. Two were later released without charges.
A 31-year-old man from Pelican Narrows was charged with recklessly discharging a firearm. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a different investigation from July by Deschambault Lake RCMP.
A 20-year-old woman from Deschambault Lake was also charged for breach of an undertaking, which police say was linked to the same July investigation.
Both people will appear in court on August 11.
The Serious Incident Response Team — the civilian-led provincial police watchdog agency, which is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in the province — has been notified of the incident by RCMP, and is investigating the circumstances of the shooting, Saturday's news release said.
RCMP say there will be increased police presence in Lake Deschambault as the investigation continues.

Prosecutors examine arson link to France's worst wildfire in 50 years

A wildfire in southwest France that burned 16,000 hectares last week – the country's worst in at least 50 years – is under control but will not be fully extinguished for several weeks. Investigators say it may have been started deliberately. Montpellier prosecutor's office said in a statement that, given the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire, it may have been caused intentionally. The statement, released on Wednesday, added that this must be confirmed 'by numerous additional investigations' without specifying how long they could take. The blaze swept through the hills of the Corbières mountain range in the Aude department in just 48 hours. It took five days to bring under control. One woman was killed, two other people were injured, and about 2,000 people were evacuated from 16 villages directly affected. The fire destroyed 36 houses, 21 farm buildings and burned 2,200 hectares of crops, including large numbers of vineyards. An investigation was launched on 6 August, the day after the fire started on 5 August at 4.15pm along a departmental road in the town of Ribaute, halfway between Narbonne and Carcassonne. Firefighters arrived within minutes, but high heat, dry air and strong winds made it impossible to stop the fire immediately. Some 2,000 firefighters fought to contain the blaze by 10 August. Colonel Christophe Magny, head of the Aude fire and rescue service, said the rugged terrain of the Corbières means it will not be extinguished 'for several weeks'. Hundreds of firefighters remain on site to monitor flare-ups – some using drones – and carry out clean-up operations. Before this fire, by the end of July and midway through the summer season, France had recorded 15,000 hectares burned in 9,000 fires, mainly along the Mediterranean coast.

Homes and cars hit in Sacramento County neighborhood after dozens of shots fired

No one was hurt, but several homes and vehicles were hit by bullets after a shooting in Sacramento County early Thursday morning. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to Everest Way, a little off of Interstate 80, just after 2 a.m. to investigate reports of a shooting. At the scene, deputies say they found over 30 rounds had been fired in the usually quiet neighborhood. Deputies say at least two homes were hit by the bullets, along with two to three vehicles. No shooting victims have been found. Exactly what led to the shooting is still under investigation.
