Cowboys QB Dak Promises One Position Group Will 'Make Some Noise' In 2025
Cowboys QB Dak Promises One Position Group Will 'Make Some Noise' In 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott didn't have a lot of things work in his favor in 2024, and one of them was the run game. Advertisement Prior to Dak's season-ending injury against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, Dallas rushed for over 100 yards just twice (102 and 109) with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle struggling to get anything going. But now, with a new group headlined by Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, Deuce Vaughn, and speed merchant Jaydon Blue, there is a little buzz of excitement regarding what the run game could develop into. And Dak's excited for what's to come. 'Great group,' Dak said. 'Starts with their coach, Fozy's [Derrick Foster] done a great job with those guys, Deuce [Vaughn], Hunter [Luepke], all of those guys making sure they're prepared and they've come in and attacked. They're professionals, you're talking about guys who have had pretty good careers and looking to take it to the next level. So those are two guys just excited for their opportunity and some young guys who are going to make some noise.' by Mike Fisher Sanders and Williams loom as the top two on the depth chart, with Deuce and Blue as the change-ups. Advertisement After a 2024 season where the Cowboys rushed for just 100.3 yards per game (ranked 27th), with a new group, and Klayton Adams and Conor Riley, both experienced coaches with the ability to develop good run games, Dallas feels to be in a good spot with the rushing attack. Something that couldn't be said a year ago. Of course, once training camp begins, the pads come on, and defenders can hit, we will see this "great group" in action, but for now, we have to take Prescott's word for it. And we'll see who makes some noise in Oxnard. Deuce Fans Demand He Gets 'A Real Shot' from Cowboys
I don't know what's going to happen to Deuce Vaughn in Dallas. But I do know this — you can't tell me the kid who led the entire country in all-purpose yards at Kansas State can't play in the NFL. ... Especially not when his only reps came under a coaching staff that's no longer in the building — largely because of their own inability to build a creative, functional run game. Advertisement And here's something else worth factoring in. During the Cowboys' post-draft press conference prior to Vaughn's second year, Mike McCarthy openly acknowledged that they overhauled the entire pass protection scheme for their running backs. And for someone like Deuce Vaughn — a rookie running back already undersized and fighting uphill in pass pro — that 'revamp' likely felt like a foreign language. Think about that. You're asking a rookie to learn a brand-new protection system, adjust to NFL speed, and compete for a role in a backfield that didn't yet know what it wanted to be. That's not just a challenge — that's a structural disadvantage. Advertisement The Cowboys weren't just installing a new playbook. They were overhauling everything. Which means Deuce Vaughn probably didn't get the development plan, the tailored packages, or the situational usage he deserved. And that's not a reflection of his ability. It's a reflection of timing and circumstance. Because as we've said before: It's not about who's in the backfield. It's about how you use them. And in 2023, Dallas didn't have that answer. We just wrote about this last week in the Playoff Dak article: the Cowboys' postseason failures have gone far beyond the quarterback position. The run game has consistently vanished. The scheme lacked nuance. The offense didn't marry the run to the pass. And for a player like Deuce— that environment gave him no chance. Deuce is still 5-6 and 176. That's not changing. But otherwise? Now, some things are different. Advertisement New coach Brian Schottenheimer and his staff aren't just emphasizing the run — they're emphasizing physicality and functionality. Running the ball with purpose, not just to check a box or meet a minimum requirement. And one of the new key voices in that room just so happens to be Connor Riley, Vaughn's former offensive line coach at Kansas State. If anyone knows how to unlock Deuce, it's him. Yes, the Cowboys added two veterans in free agency. Yes, they drafted two rookies. But let's not act like anyone outside of Jaydon Blue is untouchable. They're all playing for jobs this summer. And I say - speaking for fans of the players - that Deuce Vaughn belongs in that mix. I will argue that he can absolutely play in this league. He just needs a real shot — in a real offense — with real vision for how to use him. And maybe, for the first time since arriving in Dallas, it looks like he might actually get one. Cowboys Fans Saddened by Projection to Cut Loose Deuce
FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn has been living a football fairy tale ... and it might be ending soon. Having been a fan favorite since being drafted in 2023 with his father, Chris, a scout for the Cowboys, delivering that emotionally charged phone call to let his son know he had been drafted, it has been two years of tough sledding for Deuce. Advertisement And after the NFL Draft, it's gotten that much tougher with Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah both being selected. Plus, new coach Brian Schottenheimer can squint and envision them as potential starters. But now, as attention turns to the offseason programs, Dallas has trimmed its roster to 90, and running back Malik Davis was one of the four players the franchise waived. That's one less player Deuce has to usurp. Now, with OTAs about to get underway here inside The Star, Vaughn still has a huge hill to climb with Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, Blue, Mafah, and even fullback Hunter Luepke ahead of him. Advertisement But the path forward is becoming clear for Deuce. ... and it's likely to end in a way fans don't want it to. When we break down the Cowboys' 53-man roster predictions and we don't include Deuce? Fans don't love it. The problem with the diminutive runner? He's not bigger than Dallas' big backs, or faster than the fast ones, or more shifty than the shifty ones. In short ... There's nothing that he does that is anywhere close to being better than anything that these other guys do. Deuce hasn't managed to set himself apart from the other backs on the roster since arriving at The Star, let alone the new ones coming in, and who knows, maybe with Conor Riley, his former coach at Kansas State, might help tilt the scales in Deuce's favor. Advertisement But even as a second kick returner alongside KaVontae Turpin, there are now better options. And besides, as you are trimming this roster in the coming months, do you hang onto a player because he's a backup kick returner?
