Explosive and elusive, RB Deuce Vaughn impressing in Cowboys training camp

USA Today6 days ago
Training camp is in full effect and for teams like the Dallas Cowboys, roster spots are on the line. Running back headlines a list of positions the Cowboys hope to fill through open competition and a competitive atmosphere. RB is particularly interesting because Dallas doesn't just have an opening at the starting spot, but the entire RB depth chart is up for grabs here in Oxnard.
Deuce Vaughn, a 2023 sixth round draft pick, is one of such RBs fighting for a role in 2025. The 5-foot-6, 176-pound jitterbug is a niche player who has been one of the first to shine in training camp. The Kansas State product has been quick to the hole, explosive out of his cuts and hellbent on getting downfield fast.
Through his first two years in the NFL Vaughn has had a tough time getting on the field. His 40 career carries for 110 yards equates to just a 2.8 yards/carry average. His impossibly small build has come with some obvious liabilities that have yet to be overcome and some advantages that have yet to be realized in real game action.
In this his third NFL season, he's flashing some of those advantages early in training camp and hoping to continue it through the preseason and onto the final roster in 2025.
Vaughn's small stature and frictionless cuts have been on full display. Standing a full foot shorter than many of the lineman in front of him, Vaughn can easy dip below sight lines and navigate with stealth-like precision behind blockers and through holes. It's an image he's flashed in the past before and again here in 2025 it's invigorated his personal fanbase within Cowboys Nation.
How Vaughn holds up when pads and contact ramp up is the question everyone's asking. As a college workhorse who ran for over 3,600 yards in his last three seasons, Vaughn has proven he's more than meets the eye. His durability and elusiveness have allowed him to overcome his size limitations in the past and remain his gateway to a meaningful role in the pros.
Vaughn comes to training camp on the roster bubble. He has to prove he can be a player in the NFL and that can only come when all the pads come on and the hits are real. But his flashes in shells aren't nothing and they serve as a reminder of what someone like him can bring to the table when given the right role.

Vaughn emerges as one of league's hottest hitters with Brewers after slumping with White Sox

MILWAUKEE (AP) — When Andrew Vaughn joined the Milwaukee Brewers last month with a chance to rejuvenate a career that had gone sideways, the message he received from his new team was simple. If you chase, you won't play. Vaughn took that advice to heart, and suddenly the guy who was batting well below .200 for the first two months of the season is one of baseball's hottest hitters. His remarkable turnaround produced its biggest highlight yet on Tuesday night as Vaughn hit a grand slam and had a career-high six RBIs in the Brewers' 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Vaughn's performance helped the Brewers extend their NL Central lead over Chicago to two games. 'It's a special group here right now,' said Vaughn, who went 3 for 4 on Tuesday. 'We're playing really good baseball. It's fun to be a part of.' Vaughn, 27, is batting .375 with a .439 on-base percentage, .771 slugging percentage, five homers and 21 RBIs in 15 games since joining the Brewers on July 7. The only player in the major leagues with more RBIs during that stretch is Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber. 'It's been awesome,' teammate Jackson Chourio said through an interpreter. 'The way he's been able to help us out has just been spectacular. It's just been inspiring to watch.' Vaughn's surge is particularly notable because he was struggling as much as just about any hitter in the game for much of the season. After hitting a combined 72 homers for the Chicago White Sox from 2021-24, Vaughn batted just .189 with a .218 on-base percentage, five homers and 19 RBIs in 48 games before he got sent down to the minors. Vaughn was still playing with Triple-A Charlotte when the Brewers acquired him in a June 13 trade that sent Aaron Civale to Chicago. The Brewers initially assigned Vaughn to their Triple-A team in Nashville, but they called him up when a thumb sprain sent first baseman Rhys Hoskins to the injured list. Little did the Brewers know the guy they'd picked up from the minors would get on this kind of heater. 'The kid's been unbelievable,' manager Pat Murphy said. Murphy noted that Vaughn is swinging at the right pitches now. Vaughn concedes that wasn't the case earlier when he was with the White Sox. 'Early in the year, I was hitting the ball hard, maybe swinging at some bad pitches,' Vaughn said. 'Just trying to hone in on that, focus on getting my pitch to hit.' Vaughn certainly found the right offering Tuesday when he sent the first pitch he saw from Ryan Pressly over the left-field wall for his second career grand slam. Vaughn also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second and hit an RBI single in the fifth. He has gone 8 of 15 over his last four games while helping the Brewers overcome their injury issues at first base. Jake Bauers joined Hoskins on the injured list July 20 with a left shoulder issue. Yet the Brewers have kept on winning with Vaughn taking over at first. Vaughn's transformation at the plate is similar to the turnaround he's encountered in the standings. After playing for last-place White Sox teams, he savors the opportunity to have a major role on a Brewers squad that has the best record in the majors. 'Winning's fun, and we've been doing it a lot,' Vaughn said. 'We want to keep it going.' ___ AP MLB:

'Still dirty': Tigers fans issue warning to Lachie Galvin for Bulldogs grudge match

Wests Tigers fans have promised to bring the heat when Lachie Galvin runs out for the first time against the club he ditched mid-season. But they risk being drowned out by the rabid Bulldogs Army. The 20-year-old playmaker will line-up against the Tigers at CommBank Stadium on Sunday afternoon and can expect a serve from the home crowd with every touch of the ball. David Craine is a lifelong Balmain/Wests Tigers fan and administers the 'Wests Tigers Will Never Die' Facebook page, which has more than 44,000 members. He predicts Galvin will cop a hostile reception from both fans and former teammates. "The fans are still dirty over him walking out and will let him know. They will boo him at every opportunity," Craine told Yahoo Sport Australia. "And I believe it won't just be the fans - the players will be filthy as well. "I've heard reports that the team want payback for what he said about Benji…basically saying he can't coach. These players are only there because they believe in Benji. They will want to send him (Galvin) a strong message." But for all the passion and anger Tigers fans will muster, Craine concedes they face a tough time being heard over the raucous Bulldogs Army. Canterbury's fan base is on the march and turning up in big numbers during the club's best season in a decade. "I expect Dogs fans to be bigger and louder than our sobbing fans," Craine predicted. "Their fans are the most passionate and noisy in the game and will try to drown the Tigers fans out. But we won't back down and they won't back down. We'll both be doing what we can to give our side an edge. It's all set up for a really feisty afternoon with plenty at stake for both teams." Canterbury has kept Galvin out of the firing line this week, refusing to offer him up to media outlets for fear of heightening tensions. It's been left to teammates to speculate on how the rookie half will handle playing against the club he rejected two months ago. Halves partner Matt Burton said: "He'll just go to another level and get better from that (scrutiny). That won't faze him at all. "There's going to be a lot of talk, but whatever's in these four walls, we just stick together and we don't worry about that. It's like he's a 26-year-old in a 20-year-old's body. He's got that maturity about him."
